About this project
Life and Art in South Africa
The goal of this project is to travel to South Africa for a month to observe, interview and interact with artisans who create dance, music and theatre to answer a poignant question, how is art created in a diverse land? What are the common denominators, challenges, and desired outcomes for South African artists? Why do they create their particular style of art? What is the measurement of success both locally as well as internationally? Who and what are considered successful by that standard? These are some of the questions to be explored addressing South African artists. The results of the exploratory investigation will culminate in an hour-long documentary.
I want to explore this project in an effort to identify the current artistic culture of South Africa. Many of the voices of its artists appear to have faded quickly and quietly into the background. Since the ending of apartheid, the release of Nelson Mandela and the awarding of the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize to Bishop Desmond Tutu the vibrant voices of artists who had their fingers on the pulse of the political and social aspects of the country appear to no longer be in the forefront of artistic activism. Where are the artists who once challenged the status quo, educated the masses through their artistic expressions and offered profound statements about life through their medium and what of their protégés? I am very excited about sharing my findings. My hope is the answers to such compelling questions are of interest not only to South Africans, but also to the larger International community.
Through fundraising events, (parties, dinners etc) speaking to various cultural organizations, reaching out to friends and family are some of the ways that the goal of raising $25,000 dollars is hoped to be achieved. Traveling to South Africa for a month for this adventurous study will prove to be an intriguing and inviting cultural experience to excite the minds and stimulate the viewer’s exploration of a world that is NOT worlds apart from their own.
