Thank you for releasing the Humble Bundle key for the non-Alpha users.
Good question. I'm hesitant to give a release date because it's not firm enough yet and I don't want to disappoint. However, I can tell you that the end is in sight. We are not "blue-sky" experimenting at this stage - it's just a matter of completing the things that need to be completed.
Those things basically boil down to:
- More content. We have a good range of audio and visual expressiveness. My goal, though, is to make it so you could play SoundSelf dozens of times and have a wildly different experience each time.
- The first 5 minutes. SoundSelf doesn't use language or symbols through the game, so we need to "teach" it without language or symbols too. Doing so is tricky.
- Audio mixing: the music is generative, so getting it to sound luscious requires some smart mixing work. It sounds "good" now, but in a musical experience "good" isn't good enough.
- Optimization: Right now SoundSelf runs at about 30 fps on a good computer, and even then will have moments of choppiness. Before we can release, it needs to reliably run at 60fps on an average computer.
Is there any projected release date for SoundSelf at all? Even as vague as Q3 2015? SoundSelf's release has been tied to the release of Oculus Rift, do you have any idea when THAT will be, and if not, how can you possibly state that software not currently ready for release will be ready then?
Could you perhaps talk a little about what still needs to be done, that is preventing you from releasing the version that you are currently demoing at events like PAX?
