Sound Bounce hearing protection uses smart materials to block out loud and damaging sounds.The idea for Sound Bounce came while working with people who experience tinnitus, a hearing condition which causes continuous ringing or buzzing in the ears. We found that the majority of people with tinnitus had worked in loud environments, or were exposed to loud noise on a regular basis. This, combined with substandard hearing protection, led to the development of hearing problems over time.
Sound Bounce was originally designed as acoustic insulation for high-intensity noise applications such as aerospace, automotive, and heavy machinery. Through our work, we saw the prevalence of variable noise environments, and the inability of current solutions to deal with them. Foam earmuffs cannot respond to changing noise levels, and electronic noise canceling technology remains expensive. We are bringing Sound Bounce to the hearing protection market to make high-quality, affordable hearing protection available for everyone.
Low cost, highly effective hearing protection is something everyone should have access to. This is a principle that we truly believe in. In so many cases hearing damage is preventable, and with education and the right equipment, we think that people can take action to create long-term benefits for them and their loved ones. Sound Bounce is an insert for the cups of any standard pair of earmuffs. As part of this campaign, you'll receive a headset with Sound Bounce pre-installed. The insert is filled with a smart material which is highly responsive and can react to the increases and decreases in acoustic levels in different noise environments. Our patented material actively responds to the environment it’s in by harnessing the sound energy incident upon it to become increasingly absorbent. The more sound energy present, the more the material absorbs. The material is passive when sound energy levels are low which lets in desirable sounds, like conversations.
This is the insert in action. The novel housing structure, when combined with the active material, makes the Sound Bounce system 8 times more effective than foam inserts. Sudden blasts of sound can be permanently damaging. Sport shooters can take advantage of Sound Bounce’s fast acting protection. The material response in milliseconds, providing protection when it’s most needed.
This is how our patented material works. It actively responds to the environment it is in by harnessing the sound energy incident upon it to become increasingly active, thus the more sound energy the material absorbs. The material recognizes when sound levels decrease, then letting desirable low-level sounds, like conversations, to pass through.

The Sound Bounce material does not respond like other materials do to sound. The material reacts in real time to the sound energy it is exposed to. Looking at the material under the microscope the material remains inactive when there is no surrounding sound, once it becomes exposed to the sound energy the material activates.
The energy absorption results in the attenuation of noise, protecting the wearer of a Sound Bounce headset from harmful noise levels. Sound Bounce uses low-cost advanced materials within an enabling patented structure for this effective attenuation of noise.
We conducted third-party testing at University College Dublin to assess the efficacy of the Sound Bounce insert relative to regular foam inserts. This testing used a dummy head which was fitted with microphones to test the sound levels inside and outside of the hearing protection headsets.
Attenuation is the level of sound absorbed by Sound Bounce. The below graph demonstrates increasing attenuation with increasing amplitude. This means the greater the amount of noise in the environment, the greater the level of absorption provided by Sound Bounce.
Our smart material has high noise absorption at low frequencies when compared to foam, which is very inefficient at blocking these frequencies.
The graph below represents the average attenuation per frequency achieved by Sound Bounce, compared with a standard foam headset. This data was averaged across a series of tests at different levels of high ambient noise, and the peaks at particular frequencies are indicative of the way in which the Sound Bounce material can be specifically tailored.

The team behind Sound Bounce have worked together for over ten years building and commercializing innovative technologies. They founded Restored Hearing in 2009 with Sound Relief, a tinnitus sound therapy that became the company’s inaugural product. This solution was subsequently clinically proven and is helping people worldwide who have tinnitus. Their training in physics and passion for creating scientific solutions led them to research advanced materials for the prevention of hearing damage. R&D from an acoustic perspective led to the development of a new Tunable Acoustic Material. This is the Sound Bounce technology.
