This is it!!!! The final hours. We're almost there! We've got an angel backer who has put in $1250, and is challenging anyone and everyone to match the pledge, which will put us over our goal!!!!
NEW!!!!! We posted the videos below as a little thank you to all those who have backed us so far and as a preview of some of the songs that will be on the album (as well as the revelation of the album title). If you're visiting our page for the first time, look below the videos for a detailed description of the project. Enjoy!!!
We are in the process of recording new music that we’ve been writing for the last couple of years, and are incredibly excited to be producing our fourth full-length studio album! Over the past several months we have been borrowing equipment from friends, fellow musicians and studios for brief chunks of time in order to record what we have thus far, and we are extremely enthusiastic about the songs we have been working on, as we feel it's our best material to date.
Our plan for some of the funding, should we reach our goal, is to purchase certain key pieces of equipment so we can continue to make this album (and future albums) completely independently. Having this equipment at our disposal will allow us to achieve and capture the performance we need to produce an album that meets or exceeds the quality of our past albums, all in our own studio. We’ll also be paying for guest musicians, like horn players, as well as mastering, manufacturing and promoting the album with music videos, etc.
In the past we have had to solicit investors and borrow money in order to make an album. We have had to use all album sales to pay back the investments and we’re still paying them back, seeing very little income from our recorded music. Funding the project this way will enable us to receive money back from sale #1.
Although financial reward for the time and energy that goes into making and performing music is always welcomed, that is hardly our main motivation for continuing to do it year after year. Not only do we personally feel so much joy in creating and sharing our music, but we also get a huge return in the positive response we get from fans and the community. Whether through conversations after the shows or messages from fans via e-mail or social networks, the feedback that we receive on a consistent basis is that our music has changed people's lives and carried them through difficult times.
Unfortunately, making great music that touches people's hearts isn't always enough to achieve success. The music industry has changed so much throughout our career, and it’s next to impossible to get a record deal and make it big in this business these days. But it has become easier to record and share music yourself, and that’s what we plan to do.
Albums generally cost a lot of money to make. Many, many hours are spent in the studio to get a song from its conception to your ears. With the funding from this campaign we will be able to cut out a lot of the overhead costs of producing an album by doing nearly everything in house. And for the first time in our career we will have the freedom to create and record on our own time. No clock ticking, no high priced engineer and producer to worry about. The pressure is off and the inspiration is on!
With the love and support of our fans we have made it this far, and with your contribution we will be able to raise the money that will allow us to accomplish making our best album to date. We've found that it's not just talent and connections that make things happen in this business, its also having the capital behind you. It feels good to know that thanks to Kickstarter, instead of having one backer we will be able to have a whole community contributing to making this awesome album!
Here's what your contribution will be helping to cover:
Guest musician pay: $3600
Recording equipment: $5500
Promotion (including t-shirts, stickers, posters, etc.): $2000
Misc. (including travel and costs for reward items): $1000
Music Video (or maybe two!): $3000
Fees involved with Kickstarter campaign: $2000
Risks and challenges
Having been through the process of making an album three times already, we know exactly what it takes from start to finish, and have all of our vendors already in place to complete all the post production stages. Over the course of the last three projects, we were, of course, faced with numerous challenges, of all kinds. Mostly they have been issues with securing enough funds to complete the project, or communication struggles with producers or between band members. We have been through a great deal together over the years, and we have always managed to band together as a family unit to get through any struggle, coming out the other end with a stronger bond than ever. Failure is simply not an option for us. We have a strong faith and belief in our music and mission to spread it far and wide, so despite any obstacle, we always manage to see the project through to completion.
One of our biggest challenges with this album is time management between family and other projects. What is different this time around is that we all have growing families, and as such have had to dedicate more time, energy and priority in that direction. Geographical distance is also a factor now that some of us have relocated to Santa Barbara and some are still in Santa Cruz.
But so far we have managed to get together whenever time permits and travel is possible. We are so lucky to have families and community who willingly offer support with our children when possible. And travel obstacles will be less of an issue if our campaign is successful and we actually have a budget to work with. Otherwise, we will stop at nothing to get this album out to the world. We truly feel that we will always continue to pursue this dream no matter what.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
