In Hellenic philosophy the concept of ekstasis means to “be or stand outside oneself”. An example the Greeks used was consciousness, which allows for altruistic “exterior” things like consideration and empathy. I find this idea beautiful because to be outside yourself is to experience oneness with the world.

I have created an installation I call The Nothing Box that leads you, the participant, through a tunnel and into the heart of a sculpture made of mirrored boxes. Inside you are surrounded by an array of lights that recede in all directions in a three dimensional grid, and you feel like you are floating in a void. The lighting inside the sculpture gradually dims while outside lighting projected onto the surrounding walls gradually brightens, depicting a fictitious space created by a forced perspective that is visible from inside the sculpture only. When you exit the sculpture you will see a different space than what was visible from the viewpoint within the sculpture. You may experience a shifting of space, a doubting of your own senses; a rift between what you have perceived and the rationalization of this perception. The piece is set up so that you will first act as participant who is witnessed and then witness to other participants. The sharing of the moment and the exchange of roles are both part of the intention of the work. This piece invites you to lose yourself, and in so doing to find another.

This piece will be exhibited at the Make Hang Gallery at 450 Green Street in San Francisco’s North Beach district  in November of 2011.

I designed the support structure using a computer-aided drafting program for accuracy and to account for all of the intricate pieces. I welded and machined the metal structure at the Crucible in Oakland, with the support of the incredible and knowledge staff and instructors. They are also helping me with the programming of the micro controller that will control the lighting cross fade.

This piece is almost complete. But there are some things I cannot fabricate myself. I need to purchase twenty four more one-way mirrors, an Arduino Uno micro controller, LED bulbs for inside the mirrored cubes, special silicone tape to join the mirrored cube corners, electrical conduit and extensions cords to plug everything in and connect it to the controller. I also need to rent 8 ellipsoidal light fixtures for the duration of the show.

Thank you!!!! Your contribution and support are amazing!
