Project description in 2 sentences!
Loquacious and Lovely are two climbable, interactive unicorns that "talk". This Public Art piece was designed for massive public interactivity, and the first stop is at the Burning Man Festival in Black Rock City, Nevada.
What do the unicorns look like?
Lovely and Loquacious are two adult-sized colorful unicorns that resemble characters found on Carousels and Playgrounds. Specifically, their design is based on a piece of playground equipment called a "spring rider”. These Unicorns are slightly larger versions of spring riders that have the same cartoon-like characteristics. They have oversized bright eyes and a cute horn to match their cute bodies. They are shaped to comfortably seat adults, yet mounted at 14" above the ground similar to playground equipment. Loquacious is painted in a white scheme, Lovely in a pale pink scheme, each lit with LEDs and facing each other at a distance of a few feet. Riders will thus face each other, sharing the joy for that brief encounter or linger on in conversation deep into the night.
They talk? REALLY?
Both unicorns have a speaker concealed in their bellies, adding a sound element to the surreal scene they present. A few feet away, two voice boxes are mounted on carnival themed posts. These boxes house microphone stations through which participants lend their voices to Lovely and Loquacious. When a participant speaks through a voice box, their voice comes out of either Loquacious or Lovely. If someone is on top of one of these unicorns, they will hear the voice as if it were coming out of the unicorn they're riding on. Imagine the delicious interplay of human creature dialogue!
What will your money be spent on?
- Help with Freight transportation to the Playa via the NYC Container
- Extra Fiber optics to make the tails fluffy
- Chatty voiceboxes for chatty unicorns to talk through (OK, they're actually Karaoke speakers)
- Much more LED strip lighting and controllers to make them beautiful at night
- "Enlighten" (a type of glowing acrylic) eyes
- Batteries and charging (Boring but necessary)
What kind of experience am I contributing to?
Even at a distance and through the dust, the shape of the spring-mounted unicorns Loquacious and Lovely invoke a spirit of play. As you approach, you may see participants bobbing and bouncing on our playa version of an everyday playground. Spring riders are common, safe playground equipment inviting to young and old alike. The art is highly interactive- we hope that people who do not know each other will play and leave the piece laughing, as friends, with respect and love for each other. Those waiting for their turn may forget about riding while they enjoy making Lovely and Loquacious speak and sing on our carnival microphone stations. Unsuspecting passers-by will get drawn in by the sound of these talking, bouncing Unicorns while participants explain how the entire play set sculpture works.

Risks and challenges
We were awarded an honorarium from Burning Man to cover minimum costs and so a solid amount of this project has already been budgeted and planned for. Engineering drawings have been completed and approved, metal has been purchased, fiber optic tails are ready to go, the sound system is working.
Loquacious and Lovely are happening!
The total cost of this project is over $14,000. This Kickstarter campaign is to help cover the costs to make this project truly magical. The devil is in the detail and we want the lighting design, the eyes, the tail and the unicorn bodywork to be truly spectacular.
Also, the Burning Man grant does not cover transportation costs from NY state to Black Rock City, so you will literally be helping Loquacious and Lovely to ride into the Playa!
Therefore, our final design choices will be made based on the outcome of the funding campaign and your enthusiasm to meet the unicorns.
Loquacious and Lovely cannot wait to play with you on the Playa!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
