Where (we) Live is a new collaborative performance project from So Percussion and also a record out 9/25 on Cantaloupe Music!

WHERE (WE) LIVE

We are so excited to tell you all about Sō Percussion’s new show and record release on Cantaloupe Music called Where (we) Live.

Where (we) Live is a multi-media, multi-artist, fully-staged theatrical event and a record due out this fall on Cantaloupe Music featuring music written by So Percussion (Adam Sliwinski, Eric Beach, Jason Treuting, Josh Quillen) and special guest singer/songwriter/guitarist Grey McMurray. On the heels of Sō Percussion’s BAM debut in 2009’s Imaginary City, this project premieres this September at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and will include performances at the Myrna Loy Center in Helena, Montana, at BAM's 30th Next Wave Festival right here in our home town Brooklyn, and at several other major US venues. A celebration of community and collaboration, Where (we) Live is an exploration of our outermost artistic boundaries, as well as a re-examination of our comfort zones.

THE SHOW

For eight years, So Percussion has lived and worked in Brooklyn, constructing a personal and artistic ecosystem we call home. In Where (we) Live, we open our lives, our work, our home(s), and invite the unknown to “come on over”. We’ve invited video artists, songwriters, painters, poets, choreographers, and craftspeople to substantively alter our process. The resulting performances contain a society of possibilities: composed pieces, chance elements, visual associations, and theatrical interactions.

OUR COLLABORATORS In our collaborations with other artists, we have sometimes been surprised at what they have to teach us. For this work, we have chosen a small group of key collaborators to each inhabit his or her own space, to show us what's inside.

Grey McMurray is a songwriter/guitarist. He has written a series of songs about our homes. He will be performing with us onstage at each show.

Martin Schmidt is a video artist and also one half of Matmos. His videos heighten our focus on ordinary elements, bringing us into different homes framing the un-noticed. These videos are projected throughout on rough found surfaces, scaled to a modest life size.

Emily Johnson is a choreographer. She will dictate secret instructions to the performers via an onstage assistant. These instructions will differ at every performance generated in response to the moment with the power to alter.

Ain Gordon is a writer/director. He functions as a dramaturg and director, a fifth voice in Sō Percussion’s decision-making process, threading the project’s purposefully diverse elements and desired resulting chaos into a portrait of something that cannot actually be “seen,” home.

A guest artist in each town will collaborate with us in a short residency. We are looking for people who are good at what they do -be it a musician, writer, visual artist, or some other kind of performer - discovered with the help of the presenter in each location. We welcome the unusual dialogue of the unexpected in these more immediate interactions, giving ourselves only one day in person to rehearse with and get to know this individual. Our hope is to harness the power of new friendships and impending performance to spawn a different type of creativity.

THE RECORD

One of the most exciting aspects of Where (we) Live performances is the improvisations, the possibility for each show to be significantly different from night to night. That said, we also really wanted to make a document of the music, which is the core of the experience. The record Where (we) Live is our 8th release on Cantaloupe Music. We are working with our longtime producer Lawson White, and did a portion of the recording in Guilford, Vermont at Guilford Sound as part of a residency with Vermont Performance Lab. The record is set to be released on September 25, 2012.

THE COSTS / AKA WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

We know what you're thinking- why do these guys need my help? We have been working on this project for upwards of 2 years - and a long development period, though crucial to a project like this, is also costly.

This show has more moving parts than even our traditional concert touring programs - which is saying a lot. We have committed to paying our collaborators, special guests, and technical team (sound, lights, etc) well for their time. We also foot the bill for instrument and gear purchases, documenting the performances, our studio rent so that we can rehearse, and all of the travel expenses for the performers (this is a big one). The expenses for the record include studio time, the producer, mixing, mastering, packaging, and paying the musicians (So and Grey) for our time.

With your tax-deductible donation we can close the funding gap and bring more new original music by So Percussion into the world. We hope that you’ll help us bring Where (we) Live to life, from our home to you!

THE REWARDS

The beauty of Kickstarter is that we can ask for your help and offer you something back. We have some great rewards lined up for our backers.

Lend your support before July 12 (at the $25 level and up) and we will include your name in the liner notes for the new record!

We are most excited about this. Become an integral part of So's community for posterity! Other great rewards include So swag, tickets to our BAM show, and a house concert for you and your friends!

An added perk - So Percussion is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization so all of your donations are tax deductible.

ABOUT US

Since 1999, So Percussion has been creating music that explores all the extremes of emotion and musical possibility. Called an “experimental powerhouse” by the Village Voice, “astonishing and entrancing” by Billboard Magazine, and “brilliant” by the New York Times, the Brooklyn based quartet’s innovative work with today’s most exciting composers and our own original music has quickly helped us forge a unique and diverse career.

Our music runs the gamut from percussion classics (Steve Reich’s Drumming), to new commissions (David Lang’s the so-called laws of nature), to original music (group member Jason Treuting’s Amid the Noise).

So Percussion has performed this music all over the United States, with concerts at the Lincoln Center Festival, Carnegie Hall, Stanford Lively Arts, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and many others.  In addition, recent tours to Russia, Australia, Italy, Spain, Germany, and the Ukraine have brought us international acclaim.

The members of So Percussion are co-directors of a new percussion program at the Bard College Conservatory of music as well as founders and co-directors of the So Percussion Summer Institute, held each year on the campus of Princeton University.

Cantaloupe Music is the record label created in March 2001 by the three founders of New York's legendary Bang on a Can Festival: composers Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe, and Bang on a Can managing director, Kenny Savelson. Cantaloupe Music has made a massive impact in the new music community, and been recognized by critics and fans around the globe for its adventurous sounds.  We provide unparalleled freedom and opportunity for artists whose work fits between the cracks of established genres and catalogs of major labels. We give voice to new music that needs to be recorded, and carve out a new audience for this music.

Cantaloupe Music is proud to the be the record label home for So Percussion, and for playing an integral role in launching their career with the release of their self-titled debut album in 2004.   Since then, Cantaloupe has released five additional albums from So Percussion:  Steve Reich: Drumming, Amid the Noise, Treasure State (with Matmos), Threads, and It Is Time.   It is through these releases that So Percussion and Cantaloupe Music have developed a long-standing and valuable partnership; collaborating on a range of successful projects and establishing a visible outlet in which to share all the possibilities that this risk-taking new music has to offer.

With your support, we can continue to provide exceptional recordings of some of the most unprecedented music-making around.    Thank you and happy listening!
