Frequently Asked Questions
If you're new to City of Mist RPG, you should get the Player Guide (choose the $42 tier). The Player Guide will show you how to play the game and create your own characters.
When you choose the Player Guide $42 tier, you automatically get the new Starer Set PDF, which includes the new characters, new sample case, and basic rules. You also get all the other Bonus PDFs.Last updated:
To get add-ons, you need to increase your pledge beyond the cost of your reward. For example, if you want an add-on that costs $15, and you chose a $42 reward, you should pledge for $67.
HOW TO INCREASE YOUR PLEDGE - scroll down to the Add-Ons section of the Kickstarter campaign page. Follow the link "Increasing your pledge" to watch a short video that walks you through the process (it's quite simple).
AFTER THE KICKSTARTER, this extra add-on credit will be available to you on the pledge manager (a survey sent after the campaign, like BackerKit). You can then use this extra credit to choose the add-on you wanted.
Be sure to keep a record of the add-ons you pledged for because the pledge manager will have no record of that, only of how much extra credit you added.Last updated:
If you want Shadows & showdowns, and you didn't pledge for "I want everything" you should get it as an ADD-ON in PDF ($15) or Hardcover ($35). See the previous FAQ item on how to pledge for add-ons.
For clarity: Shadows & Showdowns is not a Bonus PDF -- it's a ~250-page book.Last updated:
We can only enable this option for you on the pledge manager (the survey after the campaign ends). Therefore, you will have to pledge with the full shipping fees and receive credit or a refund (at your option) after you select the economy shipping in the pledge manager.
You can use credit from excess shipping fees to buy Add-Ons (see the Add-Ons section).Last updated:
On top of any remaining rewards, you will receive a free PDF copy of all the books we create for this project, including bonus PDFs. This means you do not need to invest in this project unless you want a hardcover copy of one of the new books.
In addition, you will get a $10 discount for every hardcover copy you pledge for, to reflect your initial investment. This credit will be added in the pledge manager, BackerKit, after the campaign is over. So, you can reduce your pledge by $10 per book you are pledging for, and complete it with the extra credit you get on BackerKit.Last updated:
The Campaign Book expansion was renamed to Shadows & Showdowns, and it's available on this Kickstarter campaign. We simply didn't want people to confuse the Campaign Book with the Story Arc book, which includes cases for an entire campaign.Last updated:
If you have the Core Book, then you have the most current rules and you don't need the Player Guide or the MC Toolkit, unless you want a lighter copy of the rules for your game table. Except for possible content reorganization, summary pages, and some errata, the content in the Player Guide or the MC Toolkit books will be identical to the Core Book.
If you ordered the printed Campaign Book (either in softcover or hardcover), you will receive it as intended, just renamed to Shadows & Showdowns. You have the option to trade your order for credit, if you want to get other items instead. To do so, pledge at least $1 (one dollar) and email us after the campaign so we can trade your purchase into pledge manager credits.Last updated:
“I am beyond excited I found your game...I had seen PbtA and Fate games before but neither interested me. But how you have combined them and given us the freedom to really play whatever we want has my imagination in a whirlwind. Thank you so much! Can't wait to play!”
— @crimsonPK, Twitter
“This is the ruleset I've always wanted. I'm not normally a mechanics nerd, but as a former FATE evangelical who recently fell in love with Powered by the Apocalypse games, [City of Mist] marries the best parts of both so wonderfully.”
— Lex Perlman, Google+
“I just love how much freedom there is in both how to be a player and an MC. Making things up on the fly is so much easier in this game than in any other role playing game setting. Thanks to the creators for the bucket of KICK ASS that is this game!”
— Erik Trygve Christopherson, Facebook
"I've loved D&D for 10+ years, and all I can say is this is fantastic. The starter set is definitely worth giving a shot."
— Facebook group member
"Everyone got super into character, into the story, and we had a blast. They loved it, and we are changing this to our monthly game session, replacing D&D 5e."
— Facebook group member
“Ran your game with some friends last night and we had a blast. I will definitely be buying the rest of the books. We loved the story of the city and the game mechanics. And the artwork is amazing. I just wanted to let you guys know this game is awesome. Thanks”
— Blake T., message to Son of Oak
There are many more such reviews on the Core Book page on Amazon. Check it out!Last updated:
Following feedback about the size of the Core Book, we decided to split it into two parts. The first part, the Player Guide, will include only the chapters essential to players and may be rearranged to provide greater accessibility. An index and summary sheets will be added. The content will be the same as in the Core Book.
Chapter 1: The Lowdown has the inside scoop on the life of a Rift (a player character) and the process of awakening.
Chapter 2: Who Are You? is a guide to the Exposition Session, in which you create your series as a group. It includes the complete character creation system using Themebooks (questionnaires), quick character creation with Character Tropes, a system of crew relationships reflected in Help & Hurt points, sample crew themes, and the crew Themebook.
Chapter 3: Working the Case is a comprehensive set of player rules, detailing the rules of the conversation, defining the use of tags and statuses as well as resources such as Clues and Juice, expanding on all eight Core Moves, as well as on four Cinematic Moves: Voiceover Monologue, Flashback, Montage, and Geek Out During Credits.
Chapter 4: Moments of Truth describes the game’s character and crew development system, including Mystery and Identity rules, Moments of Evolution, Nemeses, expanded Avatar and Sleeper (“Denying the Beyond”) rules, and three extra theme types: Ally, Base of Operations, and Ride.Last updated:
★★★★★ “a must have for ANY GM... the tips alone are worth it!” (Amazon reviewer)
The counterpart to the Player Guide, the MC Toolkit will include everything Masters and Mistresses of Ceremony (MC, or GM/DM) need to run and create their own City of Mist cases, story arcs, Avatars, and Danger, as well as a wealth of existing materials to work with, including a bestiary of City of Mist Dangers. The content will be the same as in the Core Book; only its presentation will be updated.
Chapter 1: The City (Adapted from “the Lowdown”), describes four of the main City districts with sample locations and local Rifts, as well as additional districts and locations at the edge of town.
Chapter 2: Behind the Scenes is a detailed breakdown of the MC’s roles, a step-by-step guide on how to run sessions including a variety of tools to help make your game more cinematic, and an in-depth walkthrough for creating your own cases and designing your series based on the Iceberg model.
Chapter 3: This is MY City!, the villains chapter, contains the rules for creating and handling Dangers (villains and threats); a comprehensive Danger Profile directory containing dozens of Dangers; a guide to Avatars and their operations with four ready-to-use Avatar profiles; and a special section on creating and using custom moves.Last updated:
In Nights of Payne Town, your crew starts picking at the small cases:
a gifted hustler named Goldie falls prey to a deadly hate crime...
the City’s finest youths disappear, with evidence hinting at a sacrificial ritual...
a new designer drug hits the streets, made especially for awakened legends...
and a self-proclaimed mafia king takes the blue-collar neighborhood under his protection.
To get to the truth, your crew will have to crack cryptic crime scenes, schmooze your way through hard-headed bouncers and greasy tycoons, and face off with modern-day sorcerers and monsters.
But are you ready for what you’ll find? As you pull the threads, the bigger picture transpires: a monumental, misguided attempt to heal the City has left it permanently wounded. Now the pain of the past haunts you too, but you are the only one who can stop it from tearing your City apart.
This collection of ten cases (adventures) can be run individually or as an ongoing campaign, following the insidious operation of an all-powerful Avatar. Each case contains everything you need to run a game of City of Mist, including a teaser for your players, the backstory, locations, clues, NPCs, Danger descriptions, and maps.Last updated:
Shadows & Showdowns, previously known as the Campaign Book, is an expansion for City of Mist which was partially funded in the previous campaign.
Overlooked Attractions: a guide to the City’s most exotic locations and residents, including an expanded Dangers “bestiary” of villains, crooks, and mythical creatures in modern-day guise.
Don’t Believe The Truth: a description of the City’s council of Avatars, “the Truth”, their individual operations, Rifts in their service, and the details of their agreement to maintain the status quo in the City.
Suits Unveiled: a revealing look at the Gatekeepers, the organization behind the Mist, including complete rules for playing Gatekeepers.
The Riot: the details of the future city-wide event that will shake the foundations of the Mist itself, with story hooks, an introductory case, new Dangers, and a threat far greater than any Gatekeeper or Avatar.Last updated:
One reason for this timing is that this is the perfect moment to launch a City of Mist RPG Kickstarter: with the funds from the first Kickstarter, we developed a beautiful Core Book and Accessory Set that just won an ENnie award and were nominated for two more. We also developed four KS-exclusive PDFs available only to the original backers (forever). The game is now played by the best streaming content creators, the Core Book is about to be sold out on Amazon, and the player community is thriving. This is the time to expand both in community and in products.
The more significant reason is that when I started developing the remaining rewards ‒ cases and expansions ‒ I realized that to create them as full-fledged City of Mist products would require more funds. This is partly because I over-invested in the Core Book and partly because of multiple shipping mishaps that occured this year and were out of my control and dug into the CoM budget. The solution was to reach out to new audiences and get them involved with City of Mist through a second Kickstarter so that the rewards received by everyone would be better.
I apologize to the original backers and to the pre-orderers for not being able to fulfil everything before doing a second Kickstarter. City of Mist was an ambitious project from the get-go, and I believe we at Son of Oak did well with it, fulfilling the big blocks first, but it should have been more streamlined.
As original backers and pre-orderers, you will get better and more content without any further investment on your part, so I hope you can accommodate this learning curve. My intention has always been and still remains to create great products for you all, but Rome wasn’t built in a day.Last updated:
We found that Kickstarters tend to flatline for most of the time between the opening peak and end peak. Our consultants also confirmed that a long middle period doesn’t necessarily contribute to a successful project. Hence, we decided to keep it short and sweet, just under three weeks.Last updated:
Yes! The original Nights of Payne Town Kickstarter design was flawed, so I decided to take a break, correct the mistakes, and restart the project. The greatest issues were the confusing structure and the high initial goal, which tried to bundle too many different goals together. In this project, we start at the minimum and build up from there, with a clearer tier structure.Last updated:
City of Mist is simple to learn and built to support players new to RPGs. The Core Books guide you through each aspect of the game with ample options and examples, but there really aren't all that many rules to the game. Characters are basically a handful of short descriptions (tags) and the game focuses on telling a gripping story together rather than on grid map tactics and calculations. If you're looking for a game to start your tabletop RPG journey with, this is the game for you!Last updated:
