About

Having realistic immersive audio for your game of Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder adds so much ambiance and mood to your game. But like a good background, you don’t want that ambiance to pull attention, and a game master has enough to keep track of without having to hand-mix every location the players visit.

What is the Tome of Ambiance?

The Tome of Ambiance is your personal open-world video game ambient audio app. Inside it are dozens of fully-realized medieval fantasy locations, with randomized elements that enter the scene periodically in an organic and subtle manner. Nothing is just a 30-second loop, and it’s always geared towards mood and immersion. Weather and day/night systems allow you to change the location you’re already in. The music that comes with the Tome is composed in-house and designed to run dynamically, without obvious looping, enabling long cinematic scoring for your game without getting repetitive too quickly.

How did the Tome of Ambiance get started?

The Tome of Ambiance started as the personal project of a professional sound designer for video games that wanted to do more immersive design for his home tabletop RPGs. He was running his own tabletop fantasy RPGs and wanted audio that was extremely realistic and pleasant over long periods, being spiritually akin to major open-world video games, but with an interface he didn’t have to spend a lot of time preparing, so he could change locations on the fly as his players wandered. It wasn’t until other game masters starting asking him for a copy of this very early design that he realized that other people may want a tool that’s so easy and immersive.

User Experience, Weather, Time, & Transitions

The design of the app itself is meant to keep the controls at your fingertips, rather than buried behind menus or variations. The interface is extremely simple and easy, with every location change being little more than a single button press. Using weather system and day/night systems, instead of just a new location that coordinates to the weather, you can alter the entire sound of your current location just as if you were playing a video game and weather changed naturally.

If your players are in a marketplace, with all the hustle and bustle around them, and you change the weather from Clear to Rainy, not only will you start to hear the rain hitting the building eaves and the stones at their feet, but the crowd will die down as people take shelter indoors, but the blacksmith across the way will keep working at her forge. Then, if your players go indoors, they’ll still hear the rain on the windows and roof, because the weather is an independent system.

Why Kickstarter?

We have a functional prototype that has been used to seamlessly run real games already, to prove the concept. But there’s a lot of polish needed to make it accessible and we’d like to add more features and locations to make it even better. Presently there is only a small number of locations ready to use in the prototype and resources are needed to finish making the larger list of locations. Also, a lot of wonderful people, from artists to UI designers to sound designers, have done wonderful work getting the Tome this far, and we’d like to show our appreciation.

MUSIC MOODS!

At launch, the Tome of Ambiance is expecting to release with at least 4-5 dynamic music tracks. These tracks a designed with multiple dynamic layers meant to randomize and evolve over time, allowing hours of playback. The names of these tracks are still being determined, but these are the moods that will be available:

  • Explore (Open world wandering and quiet moments.)
  • Wondrous (Mysterious and beautiful moments.)
  • Uneasy (Dungeons and other scary or daunting moods.)
  • Medieval Combat (High energy combat with medieval instruments.)

Music is one of the things that we hope to expand considerably as the app expands and if this funding goes well, we’d like to create stretch goals with the intent of adding more music tracks.


 TENETS OF THE TOME

This started as a project of passion and it is meant to stay that way, to be shared with those who would want it. For this reason, the Tome of Ambiance is being developed some important values that dictate the methods we use in its development and release:

  •  BY GAME MASTERS, FOR GAME MASTERS. The Tome was designed and created by a dungeon master and tested with dungeon masters. It was created by a professional video game sound designer for his own home D&D games and he still uses it. The Tome of Ambiance was made by people that use it. 
  •  HONEST PRACTICES. We want you to own what you purchase. When you buy this app, it stays on your device. No subscriptions. If you bought it, you keep it as long as you have that device. The base app will work for a vast majority of fantasy RPGs, instead of withholding key features behind micropurchases.
  •  VIDEO GAME QUALITY. The ambiance provided by these locations are on par with major video game ambient audio. This might make the app a little large, but we believe that if you’re going to be listening to something for hours while you play with friends, it needs to bring more than a 1 minute loop to the table.

STRETCH GOALS

As the kickstarter develops, we have some stretch goals in mind that we'll activate if we're doing well enough! In no particular order:

  • Releasing the Tome with more music tracks than originally planned, thanks to being able to contract additional composers.
  • Releasing the Tome with one of the first planned expansions live on launch. Which expansion that would be would depend on a community poll that would go live when the goal becomes relevant, but the ones currently being considered are Gothic Curse, Burning Sands, or Briny Seas.
  • Upgrading the Tome of Ambiance to change the background to relevant environment art based on the location you are in. For example, if you are in the "Mountainside" location, at night and clear weather, the background of the Tome's interface would be environment concept art for a mountainside with moonlight.
  • There are other ideas in the works, but one step at a time!

THE WRITERS OF THE TOME

No endeavor is done alone, and the Tome of Ambiance is no exception.

Darren Lodwick - Sound Designer & Creator.

Darren has worked in video game audio for almost a decade by now. He's worked as a sound designer, composer, voice over director, and voice over editor on a variety of projects. Some of these past projects include Horizon Zero Dawn, Westworld Awakening, Walking Dead Onslaught, Final Fantasy XV, Gears of War 4, and many others. He's been running tabletop RPGs for several years now. The first game he ever played was the Dresden Files Fate System game, followed by D&D 5e and Pathfinder, as well as his own homebrew d20 scifi game.

Darren Lodwick - Sound Designer & Creator

Ambur Luton - UI/UX Designer

Ambur Luton is a User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) designer. She is a passionate and driven designer who has been doing UI & UX professionally for over five years. She has built websites and apps from scratch based upon client needs and have aided in crafting, creating, and designing corporate branding for multiple corporations.

Kirsten is a freelance illustrator and designer specializing predominately in environments. Since then he has continued working on game trailers for industry leading titles and started shifting more into marketing strategy.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenges will come forward in the final assembly, testing, and app-store approval for the app. There will be a lot of testing and optimizing needed, even after we've finished the assembly. The final assembly itself will involve gutting the prototype and rebuilding from the ground up with the new UI assets and finished audio, once both those elements are complete.
