AND an autographed Limited Edition copy of SometimesBeautiful. AND your name will appear prominently in the sponsor section of the SometimesBeautiful book. Excerpt from the book…
Bowers’ artistic career is in a constant state of evolution. He is an artist in competition with himself as he constantly strives to improve his vision of the human species and the works of art he creates to document it. His quirky observations of human nature and the power structures that control human lives are stimulating and have an international appeal. “The production values of the book, itself, are in line with his own impeccable craftsmanship – incredible printing, sturdy pages, beautiful die-cut jacket, and all of the paintings are presented with lots of clean white space around them. Between the art and the presentation, no one can step into my office without picking it up and a “Wow!”

    Excerpt from the book…
Who are these women? Why are they in these pictures? What are their lives about? How do they feel about themselves? These are some of the questions I wanted to raise through the images in this collection. This current body of work is a departure for me. For a number of years, I have been producing images using the female figure. I have worked with numerous models who were professional people earning their living by posing, acting, dancing, or any combination thereof. But, as has been pointed out to me in discussions at exhibitions of my work, the people in these pictures always fell under the umbrella of a certain body type. I’ll call it a "classic" look. Always within range of the current social consensus of what is "beautiful." In fact, that was the adjective I most often heard when my work was exhibited. The women as they appeared in my images were allotted no individual identity. They were hired and directed to help me express an idea—sometimes about sexuality, sometimes about spirituality—and usually about feminine power. But the pictures were not about them. They were illustrating a theme, a story I hoped to convey.

These women are interested in "fat liberation." They hold jobs in the theater, the film industry and in business—and together they perform in a burlesque presentation called "Fat Bottom Revue." The nature and degree of costuming and nudity in their performances is determined by the venue and the audience, which can range from children’s birthday parties, to stag parties. I wanted these pictures to be more about them. These women are projecting an image that is their own. And one that also stems fro m their own story rather than mine. Their self-esteem is strong. One of them has a degree in anthropology and will tell you that ideas of beauty and sexuality are "culture bound"—that these ideas are not universal or fixed, and that they vary and fluctuate depending on place and time. They will tell you that too many people suffer because the body they live in is not the body you find in the fashion magazines.

    Excerpts from books…

Heaven—More than 450 Polaroids by Paul Kooiker are arranged in spreads that communicate a kind of rhythmic melody, one which consists of images of funerals, churches, cityscapes, fountains and numerous pin-ups and nudes.

Sunday—The spirit of Hans Bellmer lives in the twenty first century in Kooiker’s monograph Sunday. These limpid outdoor photographs capture a naked fat woman wearing high heels, her white body so bleached that her genitalia are invisible, rendering her doll-like. She poses, faceless, in positions that are sometimes sexual, sometimes motionless and morbid. Around her is a back garden, with a homemade dais for her to pose on, and views of dark trees and bushes with blood-red leaves. Kooiker uses his contemporary technique to create an oblique, threatening, somehow vintage atmosphere.

    About the Plumper series
These paintings foreground the solitary, naked female figure depicted close-up in sexually explicit poses. Despite wanting or posing for sex, they are marooned in needy bodies. They are heavy, obese and trapped in fleshly substance which is painted with slab-like density or finds itself curdling into liquid decay. Rejection is implicit in their situations. In choosing these apparently burdened and grotesque figures I am confronting an often-voiced sense of disgust for the appetitive female body and its connection with raw, messy, decaying nature, as in Marina Warner's commentary on the “filth goddess” of the Huastec in the British Museum and her thoughts on the association of woman, mess and pollution in different societies and cultures:

    Excerpt from the catalog…
Writing the Body: New Work by Naomi Grossman welcomes the return of a Queens College alumna, whose art was previously shown in the Art Center’s group exhibitions Greenbriar Workshop: Recent Works (1992-93) and The Five Minute Challenge: Six Explore the Human Form (1998-99). Writing the Body presents an extensive range of Grossman’s exploration of drawing in two as well as three dimensions. Wire sculptures that reference the human form function as drawings in space and frequently become parts of installations. Highly expressive drawings on paper and in mixed media combine a calligraphic line with painterly figuration to suggest deeply personal statements. Cropped nude photographs inquire into intriguing relationships between the visual expression of the human form and its multilayered meanings.

About the Dancers at the Bar series…
BOXERS, BALLERINAS AND BIBLE STORIES are a suite of drawings wherein one model plays a series of interactive roles with his or her self. Contemporary graphic novels and the Pop culture network series of the 1960s inspire the Boxers. The images of blood splatter replacing the graphics of POW! , WHACK! , and BAM! Ballerinas draw their inspiration from 19th Century French drawings of dancers and clowns during periods of non-performance as well as exploring the tradition of transvestitism in comedy.

About the artist Koh Sang Woo…
My work is about connect and passion. Not about the standard or norm of beauty but the connection and emotion the viewer has when viewing the artworks. Challenging the fundamental views on beauty is one of the most important qualities of my artwork, second is to amplify my emotion to the large scale.

I convey my passion of emotion to the life sized figures in my artwork. The mixture of my fancy life to reality collided, which translated to the bright irregular colors of my work. I am inspired by Jackson Pollock, William de Kooning and Andy Warhol who all push the boundaries of their time and translate their views in different ways. Every click I make on my camera. Every brushstroke I paint to the body translates my mood and passion to each piece. Capturing the love, emotion, and life is what drives me to explore the human relationships each and every day.
