We've made albums in living rooms and garages for nearly a decade. We're asking for the opportunity to record at a higher level.
We are SOME ARMY, an indie-rock band from the North Carolina Triangle formed by friends and members of The Honored Guests and Aminal in 2011. Through trial and error, we've learned to make home recordings with various bands for the better part of the last decade. We released a seven-song EP and two 7" records last year that we recorded ourselves in a close friend's garage, but we feel like we've reached the limits of what we can do with the space and equipment we've been using. In a few short months, we will begin work on our first full-length album and we hope to have your help and support in bringing these new songs to life.
We’re asking for the opportunity to get out of the garage - to work with people who have a wealth of knowledge and experience making records, and to record this new album in a proper analog studio that we would not be able to afford otherwise.
The SOME ARMY EP was an experiment in developing our own aesthetic. It was well-received by print magazines, alt-weeklies, college dailies, and blogs. Since its completion last summer, we've played Raleigh's Hopscotch Music Festival, local NPR-affiliate WUNC's The State of Things, and toured extensively throughout North Carolina and the Southeast U.S. To our surprise, the EP also ended up on several prominent "Best of 2012" lists (see more press & interviews below).
But these new songs (some of which are featured in the videos on this page) and the record we intend to create from them will represent a more clearly-defined vision. There's potential for this new album to be something bigger than anything any of us have realized in the past and we feel that this project is deserving of a more technically solid recording than we can produce ourselves.
Our budget is extremely straightforward - your contribution to this Kickstarter campaign will go directly to covering the costs of roughly two weeks of recording and mixing at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium in Kernersville, NC, as well as professional mastering. Any donations exceeding our goal will help expand our options for packaging and promoting this new album.
In exchange for your contribution, we have come up with a set of donor rewards (listed to the right) ranging from CDs, custom screen-prints and 7" records, to a chance to come on tour with us for a weekend or have us come play an intimate show at your house.
Every little bit counts, but please keep in mind - Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing deal. If we don’t reach our goal, all donations will be refunded.
Below, you can listen to our 2012 EP, find links to a few more articles about the band and our music, and generally get a feel for what we do. If you have questions about this campaign or anything else, please contact us directly at SomeArmy[at]Gmail[dot]com.
Lastly, WE WANT TO THANK: Adam Graetz for helping us put together a video we’re very proud of; Rusty Sutton, Reid Johnson, and James Phillips for being a part of it; the Carrboro ArtsCenter for allowing us to shoot and rehearse in their theater; the artists who will help us make some of these rewards for you - Wesley Wolfe, Steve Oliva, and Jerstin Crosby & Orvokki Halme (Ooja); and our friends, families, and everyone who has supported us so far.
We’re hardworking people with jobs, partners, and real life responsibilities. We invest a lot in this band, and while our story is not unique, our passion for playing and creating music cannot be overstated. Thank you for taking the time to consider contributing to our project.

Making a record isn't easy, but we've found that the hardest part is writing the songs. The good news is, we have the vast majority of the material we intend to record already written. In the next 3-4 months, we will be rehearsing, arranging, and finalizing this album so that we'll be able to work fairly quickly once we're in the studio.
We've been talking with the folks at the Fidelitorium since December about booking dates for this project and our timeline between now and June of 2013 is well mapped out. As far as rock bands go, we're organized.
If you know us, you probably know that most of us have been friends for a long time, and you know that our dedication to this project is real. If you don't know us and have questions or concerns about our ability to finish this album, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
