1. Who we are!
Brooklyn Brainery offers cheap, collaborative classes on absolutely anything. How cheap? We're talking like $25 for 4 weeks. All of our teachers are volunteers, and half of the time we don't even have teachers. Just a room full of people with a passion for a topic, everyone coming at it from different angles and with different experiences - think book clubs on steroids. And man, I'll be damned if it doesn't work out great.
How'd we get here? We love learning. Gardening, bike maintenance, perfume, how to cook a tenderloin - we'll take it all. Turns out you love learning, too, so we just up and made a school about it.
Learning with other people is usually pretty expensive. Your only choices are going to a free, shallow lecture, or attending an in-depth but pricy class. We hope to fill the void in between these two - low-cost classes that give you as much as you're willing to take.
You don't have to be a professor to teach a class. Anyone can do it as long as if they're interested in a topic. This lets you set up a framework for the class, and the students do the rest - everyone researches a small part of the puzzle, and when you come to class you're the expert on your tiny bit. Put all of those bits together and voila, you've got a class! This helps us keep costs low, so we can spend that money on fun class stuff, like telescope-building kits and chinatown beef jerky.
2. What we wanna do!
We need a nice big permanent space in Brooklyn so we can do all these awesome things:
We want to offer more classes! Every single semester we've completely sold out of class spots, and 6 courses every couple months just isn't enough. Everyone has a skill to share or an interest they want to pursue, and we want to give you the space and time to do just that.
We want to make libraries of more than just books! Do you know how much it costs to buy test tubes for science-y things, or oils for perfuming, or a way nice sewing machine? Too much! A supplies library would make crafts and vocations more accessible to everyone.
We want you to meet people! We want to bring smart, creative people together to create amazing things. There're a million people out there interested in exactly the same things you want to do, and we're going to give you a place to find each other. New York is full of intelligent, motivated, unique people, and we want you to find all sorts of soulmates, whether it's through classes, lectures, or just random hang-out sessions.
We want to have fun! Whether it's for an art opening, a one-night party or a weekend-long pop-up store, we want to be involved in your neat stuff.
3. Why we need your help!
We just need an extra push to raise the capital to give us an independent space. Because we keep our overhead low and our teachers are all volunteers, Brooklyn Brainery is fully financially sustainable on tuition alone.
When you help us out not only are you getting some wicked-cool rewards, you're going to have a significant impact on the educational landscape of New York. And thank you for that.
4. But I don't live in New York!
We plan on expanding our website like crazy! Why keep all of this amazing information to ourselves? FACT: cats can't taste sweetness. FACT: 70% of the antibiotics in the US are used on livestock. This could go on for hours, but instead we'll be putting notes from every single class online, and building a system where we can all collaborate on them. If you'd like to see what we have going right now, here's a wrap-up from one of our classes.
We want our website to be a center for information and learning, where class projects and discussions can be highlighted and shared with everyone, even after the class is over!
5. What are all these rewards?
We thought it'd be fun if all of the rewards were connected to classes we've hosted in the past few semesters. From a card detailing exactly what part of the cow you should be roasting to a personal perfume-creating session, know that all of these rewards are the result of weeks of hard work on the part of our students, and a testament to the awesome things that can come from collaborative learning.
6. What else?
We love people learning from people, people making things, and people just having a good time in a creative way. Send us a message if you have any questions.
A lot of people are asking how to donate. Over on the right hand side of the page near the top is a green button that says Back This Project - click it! It'll take you through the process of supporting us.
