Solstice Team Games presents Rock Audyssey, a brand-new multiplayer rhythm RPG for Android phones and tablets! Join together with friends on the go with your Android devices to form a band and defeat your foes, or play solo and hire roadies to help cover your weak points! Whatever you do, try to keep the rhythm.

Rock Audyssey features classic RPG elements like turn-based combat, stats, and equipment, and mixes in rhythm game elements to keep you on your toes. Select your attack, then power up your next action by hitting the notes on beat. Each of the four instrument types has their own rhythm track and special moves.

A Brief History

The game actually began as a pen and paper RPG, a sort of tongue-in-cheek take on dungeons and dragons where the players were transported to a magical music land and had to battle monsters with the power of rock. The story and theme never really took off, so it sat around for a couple of months until it was retrofitted as a video game. We still wanted to maintain the cooperative nature of the original RPG and thought it would be a cool fit if it could be played on mobile devices. We put together a quick and dirty proof of concept, and it turned out really fun, so here we are, trying to flesh it out to a full game!

How It Plays

Grab your friends and your phones, it's time to play Rock Audyssey! Players pick from one of four characters, each with their own set of skills and instruments. There's Lilly Bang, the confident lead guitarist, Axe Smasher, the never-serious bassist, Penny Treyshon, the unruly drummer, and Tempy, the temp. They're just trying him out on different instruments to see if anything really completes their sound ;)

Don't have any friends? No Problem! In the single player story you can hire on roadies that can give you stat boosts and take hits for you.

Each character can equip different instruments, amps, 'dos, and threads. As you defeat other bands you gain materials which can be used to create new equipment. Once everybody has their favorite character outfitted, it's time to take on a gig!

When all the players are ready, they choose a mission to take on. Because these are no ordinary missions they are referred to as Gigs (short for giga-missions). A Gig is a story in itself, a series of conflicts concluding in an epic battle of the bands against a boss or bosses to determine the fate of whatever is at stake, be it the fabric of the universe or who has the coolest hair.

In Battle, players select actions based on how much Meter they have. Your Meter is broken up into four Bars, and the more Bars you have, the more special actions you have access to. Of course, if you don't know what to do, you can always Jam, an attack-style move that does damage to an enemy and even gives you more Meter. Save up and use all four Bars at once for a super powerful move!

The Vision

Rock Audyssey has been designed to be built fast and open-ended. With 16 bosses (not including pledge reward bosses) we expect to have about 30-40 Gigs, although this number could go way up. This is where your money is going; paying for art, sound, music, and design for enemies, background stages, and writing. We want to throw some money into music to really sell the rock and roll theme, we want animated action sprites, and we would love to add all the little features we thought up in development, so it's all adding up. However, we like to put one foot in front of the other when we're starting off, so we're asking for $9000 as the minimum we need to create a nice product. If we get more, you can bet we're going to expand this game as far as we can take it. Here's some ideas to look forward to:

IOS release: For all my peeps that got no headphone jack

All core bosses get their own stage

All core bosses become playable characters

Instruments each come with their own special attack

BvB: Band vs Band 4v4 LET'S GOOOOOOOO

Risks and challenges

While the idea for Rock Audyssey was being kicked around as early as November 2016, the actual design and programming shifted into high gear only as recently as the beginning of February. Games take time to make, and time takes money. That's why Rock Audyssey is designed to be scale-able.

The current plan is based off of the $9000 campaign goal: 16 boss enemies, 4 "venues" (stages) that they share, with one killer song per venue. If you, the people, demand more by supporting this campaign, you will not be disappointed. This game is our only project right now, and running out of money is the only thing that could stop us from continuing to work on it. So if you throw buckets of money at us, we will turn around and deliver buckets of content. More bosses, more venues, more tunes, more modes, more special moves, whatever. This project is exactly as ambitious as the funds allow.

More content means more time, however. We need time to create art, design actions and stats, code game modes, and make whatever else. For this reason, we have decided to take inspiration from games like 20XX, releasing the core intended game first, then delivering regular updates with all the awesome new stuff we're working on. Since the most basic parts of the game engine are already built, scheduled deliver of the core game is July 2017.

Another challenge we face is distribution. Right now, Rock Audyssey is being designed for Android devices, but we would love to release for IOS as well. We have friends and family that may never get to play the game as intended, because they rock out with iPhones and such. That's why stretch goal #1 is IOS support.

Finally, possibly the greatest risk of all is bears. At any moment bears could come tearing out of the woods and make everything we do in life meaningless. Keep yourself safe out there, friend.
