WHAT IS THIS KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN FOR SOLSTICE ALL ABOUT?
Kickstarter is a collaborative online tool to fund creative projects. This is ours...a new home for Solstice in Hood River! You can choose to become a backer of Solstice Hood River by reviewing the backer levels in the right hand column and choosing a level and reward that inspires you. We only receive the money you pledge if we reach 100% of our goal. We want Solstice Hood River to be backed directly by the community, so we've chosen Kickstarter as a platform to share our dream and plans and gain support! We want YOU to be involved all the way to the opening of the doors at the GRAND OPENING THIS DECEMBER 2013! So - please pledge as soon as possible to help us build momentum for this project!
THE SOLSTICE STORY We (Suzanne and Aaron) came to the Gorge in 2006 and have created our beloved café in a funky little warehouse in Bingen. We have been embraced and supported by the community. We truly love what we do. We are also grateful to have been featured in Sunset Magazine (June 2013), Food Network Magazine (best pizza in WA State 2011), OregonLive.com, Portland Monthly and have been voted Best Pizza in the Gorge three years in a row by Gorge Guide readers.
Thanks to six years of loyal support and a devoted following of locals and new friends from Portland, Seattle and beyond, we can finally create our dream restaurant that gives us a much bigger and more efficient kitchen. As one of the first riverside restaurants, we want to offer a beautiful and unforgettable dining experience to our guests. Our building in Bingen has been for sale for years and the improvements necessary to expand and run a sustainable business there are just too costly. And, since we built our two mobile pizza ovens, we need more refrigeration and storage to do more mobile events and catering. We simply need a new, permanent home that will grow with us and allow us to serve a broader local community and beyond!
THE PLAN FOR THE FUNDS We have signed a lease and the building is being built right now! The Kickstarter funds will go toward our full project budget of $300K for the following: Build out of new restaurant with sustainable and energy efficient materials • purchase of new commercial kitchen equipment • a pizza-take-out window • indoor/outdoor sunroom • installation of wood fire oven • paging system to let you know your take out pizzas are ready at the waterfront park • furniture and fixtures for dining room and full bar • licensing and permits • initial food and drink inventory • signage • operating costs and more!
We hope you think our video is sweet, funny and reflects our authentic desire and opportunity to co-create real community around food, fire, friends and the waterfront! Our move will not go forward without your help, it is a critical piece of the overall funding we need to proceed. Once we reach our goal, please DON'T STOP BACKING...we would love to go over our limit so we can go into our first winter super strong! We are in this for the long haul.

WHY WE CHOSE KICKSTARTER
The heart and soul of what we do is creating community through food. Kickstarter allows loyal customers and purveyors to be an integral part in getting us there. Solstice Hood River will be part yours and you will be able to say to your friends: "Let's go eat at my restaurant tonight". We want our backers to feel like they are truly part of the restaurant, because you are! Our success is your success. And please know we will always make our philanthropic role in the community a huge priority. We need to have the healthiest business possible so we can continue and increase our support of the charitable and creative projects we love.
THE NEW SPACE The interior will be a colorful funky-modern cross of Gorge inspired industrial and rustic rural while retaining the warmth and fun of our Bingen space! The kitchen will be the focal point of the restaurant with the wood fire oven visible from the street. Of course there will be a chalkboard wall and kids play area with family tables nearby. We are also building a full bar at this location and will feature local craft spirits and unique Solstice artisan cocktails. We will offer our same menu from Bingen with the addition of a grill and other Gorge inspired seasonal entrees.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The biggest risk we face is that we do not reach our funding goal. If we don't, it's highly unlikely this project can go forward as we cannot do a smaller or scaled down version. This is a critical last piece. We are already on a very tight budget, using as much existing equipment and furniture as possible. However, we feel very confident that our business model, our funding strategy of a mix of our own resources, economic development loans, private investors and Kickstarter, our experience, passion and creativity and our amazing rewards for backers will attract the desired financing.
We acknowledge that restaurants are risky and opening in a new location in a seasonal area is risky. Our business plan addresses cash flow, sales and expense forecasts, and market analysis. Six years of creating a strong regional brand and solid customer following paired with an in-depth risk management plan provides a solid base to launch this project and address any un-foreseen challenges we may encounter.

Absolutely! When the project funds, we will send out a survey to find out all the specifics of what you want!
Sadly, we cannot although we really wish everyone in the world could eat our pizzas all the time! Our wood fire pizzas are best when eaten right out of our 700 degree+ wood fire oven or soon thereafter.
