Scorched Earth: New Beginnings
A Post Apocalyptic World Building Tabletop Roleplay Game
What is a Roleplaying Game?
A Roleplaying Game (RPG) is a game where a group of Players come together to play through a story controlled by the Game Master (GM). There are many different systems and styles of play, but the majority of Tabletop RPG’s involve some sort of dice roll or decision randomising system to allow for chance to affect the unfolding of events.
This system is slightly different, as it is a World-Building Roleplay Game, and as such it is intended to help a group of Players work with their GM to create a deep and richly detailed immersive world, in which they can play and explore. There are 3 parts to Scorched Earth New Beginnings, with each building upon the others to create a unique world for your characters to inhabit.
Welcome to Scorched Earth New Beginnings
This system is designed to help a roleplay group create and adventure in an immersive and fully fleshed out post-apocalyptic setting. Scorched Earth New Beginnings allows the players to shape the world from its very beginnings; starting out as a group of survivors trying to find shelter, jumping 20 years forward to a small team of explorers and scavengers setting out to help their home thrive, finally culminating 200 years later in a richly detailed world ready for a roving band of adventurers aiming to make a name for themselves.
This system is split into 3 separate phases, each of which is a full game in its own right.
Phase one is set the day after the end of the world, playing as a group of dishevelled and shocked people trying to survive, and with any luck, starting a settlement.
Phase one revolves around strategic planning and decision making to cobble together a new home in the ruins of the world you once knew. It is designed to be run in a single session, and to produce different results every time.
Phase two is set 2 decades later, playing as an exploration party setting out from the settlement founded in Phase one, aiming to find other settlements and other resources further afield.
Phase two is designed to be a short campaign focused on exploration, giving you the ability to interact with other groups of survivors in a variety of different ways depending on the developments of Phase one and the preferences of the players and GM. It is intended to chart the future development of the settlements and figure where they fit with each other in the setting.
Phase three is set 2 centuries later; with a society of only a few hundred people unable to run industries designed to employ thousands, people are settling into a new way of life: scavenging technology from the remains of the past, defending their homes from others who would prey upon them, or exploring farther and farther to see what lies over the next hill...
Phase three is what experienced roleplay gamers will be more familiar with; fleshed out in Phase one and two, Phase three picks up the world ripe for adventure. Phase three contains tools and resources for a GM to build fun and engaging adventures to challenge and entertain players and that make the most of the rich and deep backstory that exists from Phases one and two.
What will the Books Contain?
A: Pages (sorry couldn't resist)
The Core Rulebook will be a full size (A4) and full colour hardback book.
The Core Rulebook will contain absolutely everything you need to run games of Scorched Earth New Beginnings, and will be packed full of artwork and content to inspire you.
The Core Rulebook will be split into three sections, one for each phase of the game, with each section resembling a self-complete 'mini' core rulebook.
This Core Rulebook is intended more for use by the GM, as it will contain all of the tools and details they will be using to create the adventures for the players.
The Player's Guides
The Player's Guides will be full size (A4) and full colour Softback books.
The three Player's Guides will contain all of the information needed to play (not run) in games of Scorched Earth New Beginnings.
These 'stripped down' Player's Guides will have all of the rules and tables needed for the player, but exclude any of the information that could potentially spoil content for them.
The Player's Guides are mostly intended to be used when a second set of rules and tables are required eg: Character Generation, Levelling Up, etc.
Early Access Phase 1 Rules
With the higher tier pledges, Backers will receive a physical copy of the Early Access Phase 1 Rules.
The Early Access Phase 1 Rules will be a full sized (A4), black and white softback book.
This will be a complete set of rules, tables, and content required for running Phase 1 of Scorched Earth New Beginnings.
Pledge Levels and Stretch Goals
Just to give you a quick run down of the pledge levels:
£5 PDF & Patience
This will give you a complete set of all 4 PDFs; Core Rulebook, Players Guides 1, 2 & 3
These will be received when the books are finally complete (estimated July 2020), also they will be identical in content to the physical release versions of the books.
£10 PDF Early Access
In addition to the Bundle of 4 PDFs as stated in the £5 pledge, you will also receive a PDF version of the Early Access Phase 1 Rules when they are ready (estimated October 2019).
£60 I Want It...
In addition to everything you get in the £10 pledge, you will receive a Hardback copy of the Core Rulebook (estimated July 2020, plus time for printing and shipping).
£100 I Want It All...
In addition to Everything you get in the £60 pledge, you will receive Softback copies of the three Player's Guides, one for each phase of the game (estimated July 2020, plus time for printing and shipping).
£130 And I Want It Now.
In addition to Everything you get in the £100 pledge, you will receive a physical copy of the Early Access Phase 1 Rules (estimated October 2019, plus time for printing and shipping).
£130 World Builder (limited to 55 pledges)
This pledge is a little different, content wise it is the same as the "And I Want It Now" pledge level, however this pledge comes with responsibilities, anyone who pledges this level will be helping to shape this game, and build an example world to showcase this system in all of its glory.
The World Builders will be asked to run Phase 1 of the game a number of times and send the results back to me. These playtest results will be used to help finalise and balance the progression mechanics between Phase's 1 & 2.
Once the rules for Phase 2 are finalised, the World Builders will receive a bundle back, to play in Phase 2, and once again send the results back in, those results will be used to finalise the mechanics for progression between Phases 2 & 3.
The awesome thing about this is that at the end of it, we will have built a world with over 350 settlements, spanning ten's of thousands of square miles, each one of them having history, back stories and individuality.
These will be compiled into a truly Epic setting book and released sometime in the future for everyone to enjoy.
£8k More Money Than Sense
Firstly, yes I know the video says £10,000 however I discovered that Kickstarter has an £8,000 pledge limit only after I had finalised the video.
As to what anyone who is willing to pledge this level will receive:
- One Of Every Book, For Every Game I Write, Forever.
- One Of Every Piece Of Game Merchandise I Make, Forever.
- My Eternal Gratitude.
While I understand that at this point, it's a gamble. I have a lot more ideas in the pipeline, and by helping me get started with Scorched Earth New Beginnings, you will be helping me bring this and my future RP ideas to life.
I'm personally not a huge fan of stretch goals, mostly because I think that if I have an idea for something that would make the game better, why should I hide it behind a paywall?
I'm Going to make this the best game I possibly can, and whether I only just make my 10k target or if I smash a billion pounds, the game I make will be the same - The Best Possible Version of Scorched Earth New Beginnings I Can Make.
Risks and challenges
Any project has its fair share of challenges, with this project the main challenge is going to be centred around getting the product complete in the mildly ambitious timescale I've set myself.
That being said, the only risk in that regard would be any serious, unforeseen personal issues, and as I said in my video, I believe in maximum transparency, so I would commit myself to keeping backers informed about anything that could threaten the timeline I've set myself.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
