About

We are making a film:

Solis Films is making another feature film, and we're working with Kickstarter to make it happen. We’ve done it before with AS IT IS IN HEAVEN, which we successfully crowdfunded through Kickstarter in 2012. The film went on play in theaters across the country, including New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, and many other major metropolitan areas. It was chosen by the NY Times as a “Critic’s Pick,” and received high praise from The Hollywood Reporter, Village Voice, the Chicago Sun-Times, RogerEbert.com, the Seattle Times, and other publications.

Now we’re making a new feature film, LUKE AND JO, and we’re super excited about it! We’re bringing in the best of the best, including many we collaborated with on AS IT IS IN HEAVEN, as well as new creatives we have met on our journey, and Erik Odom, who played “Peter” in the ultra-popular TWILIGHT series. To create the most authentic performances possible, we will be shooting the film in near-chronological order and leaning heavily on improvisation. We care immensely about this project and know it will be the best work we’ve ever produced!

What do we need the money for:

We are making this film on a micro-budget. That means that we are going to be putting every dollar we can on the screen. It takes a lot of moving pieces to make a movie work, and we have brought on an excellent team of creatives who will be extremely important in making this film look awesome!

We need to acquire lights, cameras, props, and costumes, as well as give our cast and crew a place to sleep and eat. We are independent filmmakers who have done this before and will be able to produce a film with visuals that look ten times our budget.

This money will cover our production budget, but will not cover our post-production costs. We have included a stretch goal that will cover our post-production.

Luke and Jo Short Synopsis:

Luke and Jo explores the power and complexity of human connection as it follows two people who collide at the lowest point in their lives: Luke is about to implode, while Jo is nearing an explosion. As a bizarre and unexpected week unfolds, their lives become progressively intertwined — ultimately revealing the depth of their scars, their present fears, and the full meaning of trust.

Our unorthodox, but awesome approach:

To maximize authenticity, and to create a space for honest and raw performances, Luke and Jo will be shot chronologically with improvised performances. Most films are shot out of sequence. In other words, you may shoot scene 2 at the beginning of the day, move on to scene 99, and end the day with scene 55. Since we are improvising the majority of the dialogue, however, we’ve committed to shooting the film in its chronological flow. This will enable us to adjust the script between each scene and allow the film to emerge in the most organic and natural way possible. In addition, we will be shooting with two cameras, which means our actors will have the freedom to adjust on the fly and always be striving for something more truthful to the moment.

It’s an exciting opportunity to create something fresh, new, and true to life.

So, what’s Luke and Jo about?

Luke and Jo explores the power and complexity of human connection, as it tracks two people who collide at the lowest point in their lives during a winter film festival: Luke is about to implode, while Jo is nearing an explosion. As a bizarre and unexpected week unfolds, their lives become progressively intertwined — ultimately revealing the depth of their scars, their present fears, and the full meaning of trust. Luke and Jo taps into life’s messy moments and the tension that individuals have with the need to both trust others and protect themselves.

Luke and Jo is about the messiness of life, the desperation of the human condition, and the need we each have for human connectivity.

So, who is Jo?

Jo lives from a heart-centered place: creating melodies, performing, and writing. She anchors herself with her art and her unflinching ability to connect to others, but each day she tries to outrun her demons.

And Luke?

Luke is losing his grip on everything he cares about: his career, his marriage, and his faith. As a struggling screenwriter, he’s doing his best to keep going, but the isolation in his marriage is tearing him apart. He vowed to never consider divorce after he watched it slowly destroy his childhood.

So, what actually happens…

We're not going to give away too much of the plot, but here’s how things get started:

On the night of what could be a pivotal performance for her career as a musician, Jo’s dark shadows of abuse, abandonment, and mistrust gain on her, causing her to spiral into chaos. He dad was supposed to attend the show, but gives another excuse for why he can’t be there. She spirals quickly and arrives at the show at the wrong time, destroying her chance to open for a major act. Her sound technician/friend, Brantley, tries to comfort her, but she drunkenly gets behind the wheel of her car, and her demons chase her to the meeting that will, ultimately, cause her to tune into every ounce of humanity that she has ever tried to escape.

When Luke arrives at the festival, as a finalist in their screenwriting competition, he desperately goes to work, aiming to find an agent and keep his career alive. But all his attempts fall flat, amplifying his loneliness and intensifying his depression. His only recourse is to drink, and after a particularly hard night, he finds himself alone in the city.

Just as Luke crosses what seems to be a quiet street, a car rounds the corner, barreling through a light towards him. He pauses, suddenly terrified and grateful at the idea that this car could take him out of his misery. But the driver swerves, screeching to a halt. The driver rushes out. It’s Jo.

She’s apologetic, in shock, and awakened by the tragedy that she almost caused. Their trauma is shared, and they quickly recognize both sides of the event: Jo almost killed him and Luke would have let the car hit him. A deep and unexpected bond instantly skyrockets their relationship to unprecedented depths.

Luke agrees to drive her home. Their drive is quiet, even solemn, until Jo notices his wedding ring and asks if he has kids. He does: a five-year-old daughter. The potential destructiveness of Jo's actions weighs on her even more heavily. They arrive at her aunt’s house. He turns the car off. They both step out and look at each other. He’s scared, she’s scared. What just happened? He breaks first, says goodbye, and starts to turn. She reaches for his arm and touches him. He absorbs the first bit of human contact he’s received. She wants to know he gets home safe. She’s close to tears; for the first time in years, she's feeling the weight of her actions. He's there for her. She says, “Don’t forget.” He won’t, and they part ways.

Luke wakes, exhausted and tired, but ready for the day. He attends the festival introduction, gets hilariously unproductive notes from the judges, and preps for the major reading of his script on the following night.

Jo wakes, more exhausted and groggy than her counterpart. She reconnects with her aunt and admits to missing her show, while omitting her near-death encounter with Luke. Her aunt is empathetic and offers Jo a chance to play at her bar that night. Jo graciously accepts, embracing the comfort of a woman who has been beside her through it all, and lets her guard down.

Jo goes to the bar and starts setting up for her evening performance, as Luke begins walking down the street towards his next event. He glances to the side and sees Jo setting up. Immediately, he walks in. Jo looks up as Luke walks towards her. She is surprised. Without words. Curious. Slightly scared. And intrigued. He speaks immediately. “What are you setting up for?" “My show, I’m singing tonight.” “Can I come? I’m going to a movie now.” “I’m on at 9:30.” “I’ll be there.” He leaves. Jo watches him go. Somehow after last night, the interaction feels so simple, despite the weight behind it. Brantley detects a relational note that he is not a part of. He isn’t happy and interrupts Jo’s moment of pause to ask who he is. She responds, “I legitimately have no idea.”

That night, Luke returns to watch her perform. The fire she felt last night gives way to a slow burn, as she begins to sing and get lost in her music, allowing her vulnerability to seep through. This is her solace. Her art is her truth. Luke watches closely, immediately struck by her vulnerability and the power of her music. She’s so immersed in the moment and he’s drawn in, connecting with each line.

She finishes her song, walks to him, and they quickly exchange a few words, before she says she’s ready to escape. She wants to talk to him. She wants to understand him. And he feels the same…

And that’s where I’ll stop, but here’s a hint of what happens next:

As the week unfolds, their journey takes unexpected turns, drawing them closer while forcing them to confront the nature of their relationship. Ultimately, both must come to terms with the things they’ve been running from. Both must reconsider their lives. And both must discover that the hope of transformation is within their grasp.

Talented Creatives:

Joshua Overbay - Director/Writer
Joshua Overbay (MFA) is a director, writer, and producer of narrative films. In 2014, he completed the award-winning feature film AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. The NY Times deemed it a “Critic’s Pick”, while The Hollywood Reporter described it as “ominous” and “quietly compelling.” Other critics have described it as “absorbing”, “coolly mesmerizing”, “tantalizing”, and “devastating.” In 2015, his second feature film, HOPE BRIDGE, was released and can now be purchased at any Wal-Mart, Target, or Best Buy. Before AS IT IS IN HEAVEN, Overbay garnered 30 awards for his short films, and in 2009 his short film TRANSPOSITION was a National Finalist for the Student Academy Awards.

Erik Odom - Luke
An actor best known for his role as the nomadic Peter in THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN - PART TWO, Erik will next appear in A CROOKED SOMEBODY opposite Ed Harris and Rich Sommer. On stage, he recently made his London debut in the UK Premiere of Tony Award winner Greg Kotis's PIG FARM. He will soon reprise his role as Raleigh in GULF VIEW DRIVE, the finale of the Nibroc trilogy, at the Rubicon Theatre in California.

Andie Morgenlander - Jo/Writer
Andie is unbelievably grateful for the opportunity to learn from, and grow with, the character of Jo. She studied theatre performance and film at Louisiana State University, immersing herself in the creative processes that surround acting, production (specifically, costume) design and filmmaking. Andie believes in the connection that is born of authentic human experience. She currently lives in Durham, North Carolina, where she uses acting, filmmaking, and teaching the practice of yoga to create platforms that cultivate a compassionate, collaborative and, ultimately, more sustainable way of living.

Nathaniel Glass - Producer/Director of Photography
As a filmmaker, Nate explores stories that ask questions about the nature of truth and the root of human motivations. He has worked in various capacities on numerous feature films, including HOPE BRIDGE and BURNING KENTUCKY. His first feature that he produced, AS IT IS IN HEAVEN, was released theatrically to high critical acclaim and has picked up VOD (Video on Demand) syndication. He is very excited to bring the team together for this amazing project.

John Thomas - Composer
John Thomas really loves bacon, dogs, and books. He lives in Austin, Texas, and is a full time musician, writer, and educator. He enjoys making music for Television, Film, Video Games, and remixes for various indie labels. John will be composing music and making mix-tapes for everyone.

Brandon Bruno - Editor
During his studies at Louisiana State University in Film and Media Arts, Brandon has found his niche with film post-production. As a self-taught editing machine, Brandon has cut over 25 short films and various other projects. With LUKE AND JO as his first feature film, he hopes to showcase everything he has learned not only with Solis Films, but also as an up-and-coming film editor.

Stretch Goal - Additional $30,000:

When we did our first feature film, As It Is in Heaven, we learned how much attention to detail post-production takes. We would love to have this film finished in order to submit to the festival circuit in September of 2017.

By hitting this stretch goal we will be able to finish post production much sooner and will result in a much better finished movie.

Risks and challenges

Film Production is a very ambitious task that requires many talented people. We have brought in extremely competent professionals who are committing their time and efforts to this project. We know that we can deliver a finished film that will far supersede the typical production value of a film of this scale.

We want to get this moving seen by as many people as possible and this means securing distribution. This may delay some of our rewards as negotiations can take some time to finalize. We will be providing continuous updates on this page as we finish the film and determine release dates and theater locations.
