The choice is entirely yours:
- Sustainable: multi-century durable, high performance iron, seasoned for a natural non-toxic nonstick. Made in Australia, with full weight of strict employment and environmental regulation. Wrought from clean heavy metal-free Australian iron. Patented. Buy once and never buy another one. Hand down for many generations as a family heirloom, while cooking with zero toxins, and generating zero toxic landfill.
- Unsustainable: Disposable, toxic synthetic nonstick coating with a lifespan of several months (or a few years if you're lucky), unrecyclable, imported from factories with unknown environmental and labour regulation. Regularly throw the worn 'sticky' nonsticks in the landfill, then buy another similar import pan. Repeat 20 or more times in your lifetime, and leave a legacy of enormous wasted energy, toxic load, human and environmental damage.
For the sake of your health and future generations, please choose wisely.
We don't want to be alarmist, but knowledge is power ... for change. If you didn't know you were caught in this damaging consumer cycle of toxic disposables, please read on for one very good, practical, and simple solution.
Who are we, and how do we know this is serious?
We're mechanical engineers with over two decades in this industry developing equipment for chefs. We've patented a whole new way of forming pans from a single piece of iron, and built a strong following for our locally-made cookware among chefs and experts around the world (www.solidteknics.com/testify), and home cooks serious about high performance, health and sustainability (see reviews all over internet, eg. Facebook average 5 stars from 160+ reviews: www.facebook.com/pg/solidteknics/reviews/ ).
After all these years, and all the warnings from the science community, we're shocked at the ongoing consumer ignorance around synthetic nonstick coatings. We've done our research, and we would never use or recommend them. See why, in some of the research by independent (non-corporate) scientists we share below.
Here's two very good places to start:
In Sarah's own words...
For those who already own some of our Solidteknics AUS-ION cookware:
The dimensions are very similar to our 31cm XHD skillet, but this 31cm Skillet is 3mm thick instead of 4mm thick, so a lot lighter. More detailed dimensions below.
- It’s estimated more than 1.2 million disposable, non-stick pans are thrown in Australian landfills every year. The toxic coatings mean they can’t be recycled. All of these pans are imported, as no non-stick pans are made in Australia.
- Scientists agree: synthetic, polymer-based non-stick coatings are toxic in production, and toxic when heated, due to their toxic production, and the gases their coatings emit. https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2015/05/scientists-call-limits-emerging-class-common-long-lived-chemicals
- Sadly, this is still relatively unknown by the public, due to a corporate cover-up of epic proportions. https://thedevilweknow.com/ , https://highline.huffingtonpost.com/articles/en/welcome-to-beautiful-parkersburg/
- Launching in the USA on November 22 is a big budget Hollywood movie (starring Mark Ruffulo, Anne Hathaway, Tim Robbins) about the true story of the lawyer who fought to tell the truth about the mysterious deaths and deformities caused by the Dupont Teflon plant in West Virginia, resulting in an industrial fine and payout of over $600 million in 2017: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Waters_(2019_film)
- Dupont switched to another formula of polymer coating, and were allowed to continue manufacturing. It is emerging that this new polymer is potentially worse.
- Whilst new ceramic coatings aren’t toxic (provided they don’t contain heavy metals), they quickly lose their non-stick, and are therefore quickly disposed of. They also are not recyclable. More landfill.
- Creating a natural, non-toxic, non-stick surface through the process of seasoning has been around for thousands of years. This was the norm until two generations ago, with the introduction of aluminium, stainless, and synthetic nonsticks, with their aggressive corporate marketing.
- The simple art of seasoning with oils/fats was slowly forgotten, at the devastating expense of our health, and our planet’s. We’re working hard to bring this lost 'Dark Art' back with our locally-made wrought iron pans. Seasoned iron is non-toxic, and built to last for generations. Seasoning is simple and easy after you make the switch to iron cookware and build your own natural, non-toxic, forever-renewable nonstick.
- Here's a summary of our knowledge on cookware materials. You don't need to believe us, but at least believe the independent experts with nothing to gain: http://www.solidteknics.com/blog/dont-believe-us-about-dangers-of-nonstick-pans-weve-got-something-to-sell-believe-the-unsponsored-scientists
Before the Hollywood treatment of the subject arrives on the big screen in November (dramatised, for sure, but expected to be excellent), here's the hard-hitting documentary that helped raise the public's awareness of the scandal:
This healthy cookware collaboration has been a long time in the making, and one we are immensely proud of. Our founder and CEO Mark J. Henry (and the whole Solid team) has long held a deep respect for the courageous best-selling author and vocal anti-waste campaigner, Sarah Wilson, and she was overjoyed at the opportunity to partner with Solidteknics.
Sarah became a household name as the founder of I Quit Sugar; the world’s first consumerism-quit program, and Australia’s largest digital wellness site. However, even more remarkably, at the peak of I Quit Sugar’s success, Sarah chose to shut its doors and sell off parts of the business, with all proceeds going to charity, so she could focus her efforts on what really mattered. Sarah is now a proudly very vocal anti-waste campaigner, recently launching the world’s first zero waste cookbook, Simplicious Flow.
Sarah used Australian-made Solidteknics pans throughout testing and shooting of Simplicious Flow, in fact there is an entire chapter dedicated to cooking with wrought iron. It made so much sense to join forces and collaborate on this limited edition AUS-ION™ 'Satin' 31cm Wrought Iron Skillet.
All royalties as a result of this collaboration are being donated to Sarahs philanthropic trust fund..."Give A Flow" -- Solidteknics will be matching that figure and donating to her fund.

We are truly excited to be partnering with Sarah to raise awareness around sustainable cookware and cooking practices, for the betterment of our health, our community, our planet. This is why we are here, and it has been enshrined in our vision statement since our foundation in 2014. By backing this campaign, you too are contributing to this mission - we couldn’t do it without you!
Like the mission of the Zero Waste International Alliance, zero waste has to be an important aim for the survival of this Earth. It “guide[s] people in changing their lifestyles and practices to emulate sustainable natural cycles.” It’s a goal - to reduce what we send to landfill as much as we can. We know it's a difficult challenge for every household, but an easy place to start is cookware.
Wrought iron pans have existed since the dawn of the iron age (around 3,000 years), then were largely replaced by cheaper cast iron for 200 years, then disposable aluminium nonstick pans. Some cultures, though, never abandoned their cast iron. They knew the only natural and durable nonstick came from seasoning their iron pans. The rest of us were told to forget them and switch to the 'miracle of consumer science', the synthetic nonstick pan.
When the chorus of warnings from independent scientists grew too loud to ignore in the USA a few years ago, many households switched back to cast iron because the tradition was still alive, in certain regions. Virtually every expert in sustainability now recommends cast iron, or the more advanced iron version: wrought iron, which seasons and cooks exactly the same, for half the weight.
Hand-wrought iron pans aren't practical in modern manufacturing, but in 2015 Australian engineers Solidteknics patented a new method of machine working a flat sheet of iron into a solid, seamless 1-piece iron pan, and many chefs, experts and savvy home cooks have made the switch ( www.solidteknics.com/testify ).
Sure, you could switch to cast iron for the same natural non-toxic seasoned nonstick as wrought iron, but you wouldn't have the highest performance iron pan available today.
The big advantages of Solidteknics patented wrought iron over cast iron:
- Wrought iron pans are around half the weight of cast iron pans.
- Wrought iron conducts heat faster and more evenly than cast iron.
- Wrought iron will never crack like cast iron can, so will probably last centuries longer.
- Solidteknics pans also have a smoother surface, and comfortable, longer, cooler vented handle.
This has been a very popular bonus for everyone who has supported our past Kickstarter launches for new cookware innovations: every pan supported in this Kickstarter will be engraved with 'First Edition', and the date of manufacture, for handing down a family heirloom for generations.
Note: we never engrave our pans 'First Edition' any other time - only for our Kickstarter backers.
This is not another synthetic coating. This is natural non-GMO rice bran oil transformed into natural non-toxic seasoning on our Satin surface finish. This finish is acheived through a process called 'shot peening' (also known as shot blasting). Thousands of small steel balls are fired at the surface at extreme velocities to indent (peen) the surface without removing metal.
With shot peening we found a way to replicate cast iron's ease of seasoning in our much lighter wrought iron pans. The end result is a luxe satin finish that is pure bliss for seasoning, and for the eye.....

This is now our 21st Australian launch campaign, after 20 consecutive successful Kickstarters. We launched a whole new innovative cookware industry for Australia when we successfully crowdfunded our first AUS-ION™ wrought iron cookware campaign here on Kickstarter in 2015. In 2017 we launched world-first nöni™ wrought stainless steel cookware. Now Solidteknics is acclaimed by chefs and experts, selling strongly at 150+ retailers in Australia, exported to the USA, and UK.
Patented AUS-ION™ is the only seamless one-piece wrought iron/steel production cookware in the world (apart from the US-ION™ cookware we manufacture in Chicago for the USA market). Solidteknics is also the only production cookware made in Australia. Every other brand is imported. Most are synthetic-coated, disposable, and now in our landfill ... and bloodstreams ...
We hope we have helped answer the question whether you choose an iron pan - our exclusive 31cm Simplicious Flow Family Skillet or keep spending on disposable imported pans. For the sake of future generations, please choose wisely.
We would love you to tell all your friends that you’ve found the finest iron cookware available today, they're healthy and sustainable, 100% made in Australia, and these new heirloom collectible FIRST EDITION AUS-ION™ pans are only available by pledging here on Kickstarter before the campaign deadline. Please share and spread the good Aussie iron news on social media to help us make history, not just just the world's best cookware!
Thank you and Happy Cooking!!
Mark, Rebecca, Natasha, Lara, Kara, and the Solidteknics Australia Team
There has been a huge shift among cooks to healthier and more sustainable cookware in recent years, due to the very real concerns about toxic, disposable, synthetic-coated nonstick pans. If you're not up to date with the warnings from independant scientists, please see:
In the last 10 years many cooks rediscovered the advantages of traditional old cast iron skillets. Many are now tired of their disadvantages, including heavy weight and slow heating (and occasional cracking).
Made from clean, heavy metal-free Australian iron, you can cook on our healthy pans with confidence, for the many generations they will endure. Pair that non-toxic iron with natural non-toxic seasoning that you maintain yourself, indefinitely, and you have the most durable and sustainable pans we know.

Most cookware cooks okay, and there are many others that are 1-piece (cast iron), and non-toxic (ceramic, glass). But our standards are higher. Apart from world-leading conductivity and cooking performance, for all our cookware we insist on: healthy (non-toxic), sustainable (multi-century durable), innovative patented world-first, competitive pricing, ethical, and local. Achieving all that, at a competitive price in Australia, is much harder than it looks ...
Yes, we have something to sell, but we are also mechanical engineers with over two decades developing equipment for chefs, and our vision isn’t motivated by money. Here’s a brief summary of our decades of research:
Ceramic/stone-coated pans might not be toxic (if you can trust the source), but they are disposable, rapidly.
Most stainless steel is austenitic Nickel stainless, and leaches that Nickel into food. Regular Nickel stainless is also such a poor conductor that it needs to be clad with aluminium/copper in an energy-intensive process, then a handle rivetted/welded on. Those clad materials are non-recyclable.
Solid glass/ceramic is great for health (if a trusted brand), but a terrible conductor (it is an insulator).
To be 100% clear on our position, after our decades in this industry as mechanical engineers: synthetic nonsticks should NEVER be heated in contact with food (and that really is the point with cookware, right?!), nor manufactured in the first place. Also be very careful of marketing spin on ‘new’ synthetic nonsticks: they keep inventing new trademarks and exotic additives (diamond, titanium) to mask the similar base chemistry to the original disgraced brand.
Here's more detail on our research into synthetic coatings, and other cookware materials, with links to the real, independent (unsponsored, nothing to gain), experts: https://bit.ly/2vYssHD .
In composition, our iron is very similar to traditional cast iron pans, but our AUS-ION™ design is formed from a single flat wrought sheet of iron in a new patented process, and not by the old method of casting molten iron into a sand mold. Our very pure wrought iron is a better conductor of heat, providing faster and more even heat distribution.
Our 3mm wrought iron skillets are about half the thickness and therefore half the weight of cast iron, so it's far easier to handle as a daily 'workhorse' skillet. If you're struggling with the weight of your cast iron but want to keep all the seasoning and cooking benefits, you need our 3mm half-weight wrought iron!
Wrought iron is also tougher and will never crack from impact or thermal shock like cast iron can (we show impact cracking in our video because more cast iron pans are lost in accidental kitchen tumbles than some people think, and it's a tragedy when old family heirlooms shatter on the floor). Being wrought in one piece of very tough material, our pans will clearly last many generations, and will never disappoint your descendants!
Our long ergonomic handles are designed for cool comfort. Based on simple thermodynamics, we added ventilation gaps to our long, easy-to-hold handle so the heat from the pan won't transfer to your hand (unlike thick, short cast iron handles). We've also included a pouring rim around the entire pan to avoid messy drips down the pan sides. No need for pouring spouts!
Our 'love handles' are designed for easy handling of big loads. Yes, they're shaped like hearts, and that shape means a lot to us. No, we won't change the design ;-)
We've also included a pouring rim around the entire pan to avoid messy drips down the pan sides. No need for pouring spouts!
Thanks to extensive research and development in Australia, the securing of several patents, and receiving lots of love from cooks worldwide along the way, we have now also taken our manufacturing to the USA, with 7 successful Kickstarters to date, so we can manufacture locally for our big base of American supporters. We have launched on Kickstarter 20 successful Australian campaigns (and enjoyed great retail and export success) for our innovative, patented, chef-acclaimed, Australian-made Solidteknics cookware.
AUS-ION™ pans are ready to start seasoning yourself in the normal way: the same as any bare cast iron pan, French steel pan, or carbon steel wok, if you have experience seasoning those.
If you don't know how to build your own seasoning, see our instructions here www.solidteknics.com/ironcare or the many different seasoning guides all over the internet.
Note that our method is extreme 'best practise' for our pans, and not compulsory. and 3 oven seasons make a more rust-resistant pan all over. If you have the patience, you will be rewarded with beautiful seasoning more quickly. If not, you will still get there with any seasoning method!
Unusual (we think we're the first), but true: we are offering a multi-century warranty for all our indestructible, 1-piece wrought cookware, including AUS-ION™.
This is not a marketing gimmick. We're not marketeers, we're engineers.....and this is solid engineering.
This skillet is made from one seamless 3mm wrought monobloc of very tough wrought iron, and this material won't crack like cast iron. There are no synthetic coatings or enamel, and no rivets, welds, seams or clad layers to eventually fail. It would be clear to any experienced engineer that there is far more than one century of life in AUS-ION™ cookware, and quite possibly millenia.....
Our multi-century warranty applies whether used in the home, restaurant, or campfire...AUS-ION™ is basically indestructible!
We want our supporters to buy our cookware only once, and hand them down for multiple generations as treasured heirlooms. That's why we stamp the date of manufacture on every pan. We are immensely proud of the acclaim for our products, and all our sales success, but our greatest source of pride is the parents and grandparents already planning to hand down our pans as family heirloom history....

Risks and challenges
After a long and intensive development period, 20 (twenty!) successful Kickstarter campaigns in Australia, seven in the USA, overwhelmingly positive feedback from top chefs, strong retail sales and exports, and many production runs, SOLIDteknics is rapidly becoming established as a major chef equipment brand.
Though undeniably very hard work to launch a whole new range of Australian-made products into a competitive market, on the scale of products and businesses I’ve launched this is certainly at the low risk end. After decades in the chef equipment industry and a long R&D process, I’m very confident the product is the best it can be - in fact, the best in the world - for all the reasons presented in the project detail.
If our backers allow us reach our target in time, the funds will be quickly applied to the tooling and production costs and we will ship on time (barring 'acts of God'!), as promised. We have a long and proven track record of keeping our promises, and fixing any unexpected issues quickly and thoroughly, with mutual respect.
Apart from all the engineering experience, it is our amazing strong base of passionate supporters who really ensures our success with each campaign (then ongoing retail and export success). We couldn't do it without YOU, and we are very grateful for all your support. Thank you all!
