About this project
The campaign is over now, but you can still get the game from our website!
Highrisers is a single player experience full of exploring, scavenging, crafting, developing, researching, fighting and hoping for the next dawn. It is coming for PC (on Windows, Mac and Linux) as digital download via steam, as we are got greeelit!
After the mysterious events of the last month, mankind has practically disappeared from the world. Instead, the mysterious dreamers now populate the desolated cities, where they dwell in the dimness of the urban canyons. A group of four survivors have met up by chance in the aftermath of the calamity, and they have taken refuge on the light-flooded spires of the cities skyscrapers.
Here, they desperately work on a way out of the city, ever dreading nightfall and what it might bring up from the lower levels of their building.
Take a look at the four survivors, their background and some of their skills and their crafting options:
Without the comfort of a functioning society, cities start becoming a harsh and hostile environment very quickly. In order to survive and find a way out, the team must search every nook and cranny of the building, and scavenge everything they can get their hands on - including the kitchen sink. Furniture can be disassembled for building material, and each new floor might just contain what they are desperately looking for - but the lower they get, the more danger awaits.
From simple clubs over crossbows to improvised firearms and explosives: with the right materials, tools and a good amount of ingeniousness, the survivors can craft an arsenal to be reckoned with.
And it's not just weapons: barricades, workbenches, tools, machinery, medicine, food...
In order to survive, they need to make the best of what they have.
Before crafting comes research. Many of the more advanced inventions require certain skills. And while there is quite a lot of useful knowledge to acquire, the survivors don't have the time to learn everything. So they have to decide: Medicine or Mechanics? Construction or Chemistry? Electronics or Engineering? With the right combination, they might make it through another night. And if not... well, then they might wanna try somethin else next time.
Luckily, the survivors can pool their resources, their skills and their knowledge. If they work together and combine their abilities, they increase their chances of survival tremendously. The question is: Will it be enough?
Nico has been working as a game designer in the industry for years. When deciding to form Solar Powered Games, it was time to hone those good ol' coding skills a little.
Markus can look back on a long and successful history as a entrepreneur. An architect by trade, he is excellently equipped for designing those skyscrapers of Highrisers.
Besides the core team of Solar Powered Games, a wild bunch of art and audio freelancers regularly works on Highrisers.
Desiring to bring our vision of Highrisers to life while at the same time keeping the creative freedom in our hands, we seek out to the community for funding and feedback. Solar Powered Games is fueled by the sun, and as long as it shines, Highrisers will one day see the light of the world.
This is less esoteric than it may sound at first - Solar Powered Games sells clean electricity generated through photovoltaics as a second source of income, so we would be able to continue development even if the campaign fails.
However, without additional funding by the community, we would have to settle for a version with reduced content and minimal scope, which would still take a long period to develop, staying far behind the possible potential of the game. We hope that we were able to show you a glimpse of that potential here and could convince you to support our project!
The funding we receive (after fees and taxes) will be used 100% for development, mainly payment of our wonderful art, code and audio freelancers.

Risks and challenges
Nearly all core mechanics of Highrisers are already implented and tested, so we are pretty sure that there will be no big, nasty surprises waiting for us in the core concepts.
However, a huge part of the game content is not yet fully included and balanced. This is prone to performance issues once we implement all the graphical assets. We adress this issue by closely watching the performance at all times and by optimizing the game code from early stages on.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Highrisers will be available for PCs with Windows, MacOS and Linux. We will consider console versions once we have completed the pc versions; so it will be a post-lauch feature. Mobile platforms would require a lot of redesign and are currently not planned.
Currently, it is not planned. You control all the four characters with the mouse like in a RTS: You select a guy, you click where you want him to go and he starts walking.
We think Highrisers could be a hilarious multiplayer game, but for now, we just want to focus on creating a great single player experience. As we got a lot of request for that feature, we are considering a post launch update that will introduce multiplayer (as in Klei's "Don't Starve Together").
Yes. Although we are focussing on steam with our greenlight campaign, we are definitly planning DRM-free alternatives, too.
Well... we think no; that's why we branded it a Survival-RPG, as in our eyes those are the most defining features.
However, there are parts of the game which clearly do belong in the mentioned categories:
The nightly crawl of the dreamers up from the lower levels does call for clever placement of traps, turrets and barricades - key elements of a tower defense game.
And the procedural level generation to increase replayability and other elements (yes, we are considering permadeath) do go in a roguelike direction.
In the videos, production times of several days are mentioned. Is this real world days or just ingame time? Do I have to buy boosters with premium currency to speed up production times?
This refers to ingame time only - a day in the game will only take several minutes in the real world! (We have yet to determine exactly how many minutes, but this will be a topic for extensive playtesting.)
Highrisers is not like a mobile waiting game and there will be no premium currency or boosters or any kind of ingame payment whatsoever.
