THE SOLAR DECK
The tarot deck I’m currently working on has evolved from research that I’ve been doing into Mesopotamian and Babylonian imagery over the last several years. Some ofthis work can be seen here (https://www.martinkatzoff.com/printmaking )
I decided to make the “Solar Deck” out of copper plate etchings rather than ink and paper because I thought it would be truly unusual to see how the age-old process of printmaking translated from the way this imagery was inscribed into old tablets thousands of years ago.
I really want to bring the energy from Neo-Babylonian and ancient Canaanite history into a tarot deck, and I think the transformation from ancient images and deities in Mesopotamia, which are primarily viewed in museums and textbooks, could be truly unique to experience in a 21st-century context. The Solar deck is named for the Mesopotamian sun god Shamash, a key figure in the Mythology of the region. (The Deck is based of the Rider-Waite tarot system although pentacles have been replaced by disks & knights are replaced by demons)
One reason that copper plate etching is so complex is because of its time-consuming process. I first take a copper plate and put rosin on it. I then scratch into that rosin and etch it into a corrosive salt using nitric acid to enhance tones before spreading layers of ink onto the plate, thoroughly wiping to embellish the highlights of the image. When finally running it through a press the ink becomes embossed on a piece of damp paper. The copper plate can go through several forms of re-burnishing and alterations before the print is complete.
Unlike your modern inkjet printer, the way that the press interacts with the plate creates a completely unique image, and although every print comes out of the same matrix- no two are exactly alike.
If you’re interested in this project and want to support me, along with other customized perks the Hand printed etching are made with Rives BFK paper Mouldmade in France, 100% Cotton, neutral pH, internally sized and buffered, Vellum surface and a weight of 300gm. (print sizes are 2.75" x 4.75")
Ink jet printed card decks will be on 300gsm professional quality card stock with a blue core (smooth finish) , & MPC card finish, & customized tuck box
Creating these etchings requires a lot of materials and time, so your support will help me create A full 78 card deck with Major and Minor Arcana! Currently, I have the major arcana completed. At the end of the page, you can find stills from previous work which has inspired this project. Thank you!

Risks and challenges
This Kickstarter is intended to support the completion of the Minor Arcana for the Solar Deck not to have it printed on a mass scale outside of fulfilling ink jet printed rewards. Although that would be a further goal.
Backers at the 150$ and above will receive a complete 22 card hand printed Major arcana deck (2.75" x 4.75"). these will be Artist print collections and will be pressed and wrapped with archival Glassine and housed in a custom designed envelope.
Once the deck is completed I am in touch with a Writer who is going to work with the full 78 cards to write a companion booklet and hopefully, it can be published. If it is not published by a third party and I end up having it printed from a company I will send supporters at the $150 level the full 78 card deck.
