softboarding: medium shred
✨✨✨ `¯ō¯¯¯¯ō¯´ ✨✨✨
is a skateboarding ballet in two parts.
This project is a tender spectacle combining skateboarding, music, and dance to build community, lift each other up, and to offer a queer alternative* to mainstream skate culture.
Part One: "the big show"
We are creating an evening length performance at Roulette Intermedium on June 25th. 10 performers will be singing, dancing, taking experimental approaches to being on a skateboard and, you guessed it, softboarding.
softboarding is when you take a skateboard deck, put it in a custom made felt case so that it doesn't scratch the floors, and then figure out how to move on it since it doesn't have wheels. Skateboarding and softboarding alike are a lot like existing in the world as a trans, gender nonconforming, or queer person, where the normal way of doing things isn't available to you, so in order to thrive, you have to get creative and come up with totally new ways of existing.
Part Two: "shredding the community gnar"
A very important part of softboarding: medium shred is a series of open outdoor public performances at playgrounds, skateparks, during protests and rallies - anywhere that there is a good stretch of relatively smooth concrete. We will take the community building aspects of what we're learning in rehearsals to create a whole new way to approach skateboarding that is centered around doing things together. This performance is as much about sharing, learning, and growing together as a community as it is about sharing these experiences with you.
Altogether, softboarding: medium shred will take a huge amount of work from the dedicated crew of collaborators. All of the money raised in this campaign will go directly to the collaborators, as well as toward rehearsal space, and documentation. This is why we need your support, via pledging or sharing, to raise skate-thousand-dollars!

* to be clear, this project is in no ways a dismissal of traditional "skate-and-destroy" skateboarding. that way of skating has been, and continues to be an essential, life giving avenue for queer and non-queer people alike to do something affirming and creative when dealing with bullying, social anxiety, and all kinds of patriarchal nonsense. it is something to do that you can turn to when you don't feel like there's anyone else in the world who understands you, and it is a vital, extremely important culture. softboarding: medium shred is not a project about replacing or undermining anything about existing skate culture; it is about adding on to it, and contributing something back to our queer skateboarding peers and community.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenges of softboarding: medium shred are the extensive scope and scale. Each collaborator is coming from a different background and perspective - dancers, musicians, skateboarders, artists, and more. It is a dream team and I am so excited to have everyone "on board!" Everyone is fully bringing the expertise they have into the work, and fearlessly learning brand new skills as well. This requires a huge investment in rehearsal time and studio space, which is where you come in. With you support via pledging and sharing - we can do this, together!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
