I'm a filmmaker based in Los Angeles, CA, and I have a personal story to tell.
One of my favorite pieces of wisdom is from J.J. Abrams, talking about the advice his father once gave him: "It’s more important that you go off and learn what to make movies about than how to make movies."
For all the technical skillset I've practiced and refined, nothing has been so important as learning what stories are important to tell. It's taken some real, messy, beautiful life to help me learn. Reconciling with life after losing my little brother has been an illuminating journey, and I've been fortunate to know, and to be inspired by some remarkable individuals along the way. They have inspired this film. They are people who love, who have been dealt a difficult hand, who suffer, and yet hold each other up in the midst of these powerful storms. This is a story about their resilience, their precious bond, and the light that shines in the midst of their struggles.
The characters in this story are dynamically different, like the poles of a magnet, opposite and yet drawn tightly together. Where one falters, the other is strong. When sudden and frightening illness strikes, it threatens a future that is now quickly slipping away. They want desperately to run. They struggle to embrace their reality, and to not be broken by the fear and pain. They must find courage to feel the life they share while it is still theirs to be lived.
Telling this story will require funds for cast, locations, camera crew, sound, equipment rentals, food, wardrobe, fuel, props, production staff, set decorating, editing, music licenses, festival fees, kickstarter fees, and more. With the script, story, and budget in place, the pieces are coming together, and we need your support to make it happen.
I'm blessed to have on board our Producer, Shereen Younes, an influential multi-media powerhouse.
And check out our Director Of Photography, Yoni Shrira, a highly creative graduate of the American Film Institute:
My brother, Mural Joe is generously contributing this beautiful, one-of-a-kind original painting as a reward for an Executive Producer! You can also select the "Mural Joe Live Painting Class" reward and he'll show you how he painted it in a live online session where he answers your questions in real time. Get your paints and paint along!
Joe put our story into these concept sketches which offer a sneak peak into the characters and their lives in this film. These original works were developed from in-depth creative discussions about our brother, things we've learned as our lives have continued, and have been pivotal in helping to visualize the story. They will be signed and are available as one of a kind pieces in our rewards!
Check out "SODIUM" for a look at our one of a kind Executive Producer reward offer: Julian's sawed-off shotgun (an Old West Replica 1881 Street Howitzer)!
And check this bad boy out: the "medieval battle axe" soon to make an appearance in "The Great Valley" and offered as a one of a kind reward for an Executive Producer!
Risks and challenges
Getting the word out is a challenge. We are not famous, nor do we have deep pockets to go it alone in producing this project. We have a story that we believe in and that inspires us. We will need help spreading the word to those beyond our network that might like to be involved.
Our cast and skeleton crew are also working on a tight indie budget. We will be wearing multiple hats without the luxury that big budgets offer. We are passionate about filmmaking however, and are driven by our love of working with good people on meaningful projects.
We've also learned that there is a newly adopted batch of kittens at our primary filming location that like to interrupt sound takes and camera moves. We have a designated wrangler though to handle the vivacious bunch. Maybe our characters have kittens...we'll see.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
