More Mold, Arcade Style, and Loot!

Hello Explorers,

I hope your week has been an excellent one, we have some more pictures to show you this week, along with an update to the Consul's Grimoire, and the Legends Loot Deck. Before we get into that though, I'd like to quickly answer a question that is popping up in the comments section a lot. What is getting retail packaging?

The following is getting retail package:

  • Super Dungeon: Explore
  • Super Dungeon: Arcade
  • Super Dungeon: Legends

Also, the Crown Guard warband and the Frostbyte Ravagers warband will have their boxes flat packed with them in the Bitey Book box. Additional items will be in the collector's edition Bitey Book box. For those of you who backed our Forgotten King Kickstarter the packaging arrangement will follow the same example.

MOAR MOLD!

We have some more pictures of production process. First, we have pictures of some of the master models that the manufacturers use to test engineer and create the molds for the Arcade/Midnight Tower models, along with a few other models.

SUPER DUNGEON: ARCADE (MIDNIGHT TOWER)

 ARACHNE/DUSKWEAVER

 RIMEFROST WARLORD

From these models, manufacturing then creates molds. We have some more pictures of molds, this time of the ones for Super Dungeon: Arcade (Midnight Tower)

As we get more pictures and cool stuff from manufacturing I will continue to pass it along!

PLAYING ARCADE STYLE

The Consul's Grimoire got an update this week, with the rules for playing Arcade Style. Playing without a Consul is largely the same as playing with one. The biggest difference is you are limited to premade adventures (designed by us or the community) and you will lack the flexibility of a human being able to react to the crazy shenanigans the Heroes get up to! However, you do gain the benefit of everyone getting to be a Hero. :)

Otherwise, Arcade Style simply uses some basic guidelines and strategy blocks to help inform you how the monsters should behave during the adventure, with all of the players managing their activation. We also provide you with two different methods of resolving monsters' dice rolls, and you can use whichever method you and your group prefers.

LOOT

In addition to the Consul's Grimoire, we have created the playtest Loot Deck. In it you'll find some old favorites as well as some new items. It's important to remember that loot works differently in Legends than in Explore or Arcade. It's not as plentiful, but you also can hold onto it from adventure to adventure. It can also be broken down into crafting components which can be stored in your backpack and used during adventures, as well as crafting more powerful wonders for use later in the game. Because of this, loot is pretty basic, but never under estimate the value of an extra die or a bonus to a roll!

I hope you enjoy looking through these new components for Legends. As always, please provide your feedback and we will continue to use it to shape Legends and make it as strong as possible!

NEXT WEEK'S UPDATE...

Will be in the form of another livefeed video Q&A. I will be answering questions for any of our Kickstarters, as well as any other questions you may have about the universes, development, etc you may have about anything Soda Pop. We're going to try out this livecast on YouTube instead of Kickstarter, because it provides us with a broader array of tools to use. The cast will begin next Wednesday at 4:00pm MST. Currently the plan is to run one hour, but if we have enough questions to keep going we'll go two.

If you won't be able to join us, but still have a question you would like to have answered, feel free to post it in the comments below and we'll either answer it in the comments or I'll cover it during the broadcast.

On the day of the event I'll post a link to the cast in an update and on our social media pages so you don't miss it. Looking forward to seeing you!

@spm I have sent several questions via emails at the info provided. It's approach almost a month after my initial email without a response, is this normal? I've posted questions in these forums about the lack of response, yet to see that everything else is being addressed. When will I be hearing back from someone about the emails sent???

Hey SPM, can we get some footage of the production line of models when they get started. It would be interesting to see the models getting pressed and assembled.

Will there be any "tools" to influence the die roll?

Yes, the item deck will be an entirely separate deck. Items will be one-use-only consumables.

      The item deck is coming!

    5. Danteire on October 12

@SPM A question on the Loot cards. Some of the capsule cards say:

      "Gashapon Capsule
Draw one card from the Item Deck
This capsule has a special prize, open it
to find out what is inside!"

Are they all the same deck, or 2 separate decks? I see it as anything that has "capsule" in the name is the Loot deck and given out at the end of Encounters and the weapons are part of an "Item" deck you draw from if you get the relevant Loot card?

Or am I gravely mistaken? If so, what and where is the Item deck?

As these are test models, the final models may vary, particularly in how they are based. The test models do not have the full base tab (the final models will). Also the spiders and Arachne WILL get bases.

      Hey all,

Just to clear up some confusion (possibly simply confusion I'm having since we have Arcade as a mode and part of Legends) the regular Arcade mode still has a deck that determines what the monsters do. In the full Arcade mode (in the Midnight Tower Box) the actions of monsters are determined by the Mighty Monster Chart and the Challenge Deck (similar to the old Arcade Deck). The Mighty Monster Chart gives the monsters set actions the monsters will do. This accomplishes two things: it guarantees the monsters have a reasonable amount of move and fight commands (so they don't just get spawn commands every turn as noted earlier in the comments) and it is visible to the players, giving them something to plan for. Then there is ALSO the Challenge Deck, which is drawn from randomly and can make the monsters behave in unpredictable ways so players can't *entirely* plan for everything (there are also fun, sneaky traps in there). This creates a good mix of predictable actions the players can plan for so the game isn't simply one of pure chance, and some random challenges players will need to overcome. The Arcade Deck, in other words, was not thrown out; it was simply renamed the Challenge Deck and implemented along with the Mighty Monster Chart.

All that being said, Arcade mode in Legends currently does not have a deck. The actions of monsters will largely be written in the individual campaign, allowing us to make the automated monsters act differently depending on the adventure and creating a more story-driven game. Of course, it is still in testing, so send us your feedback!

      Also, hi Mason! *waves*

@Paul Hamblin: I guess it depends a little on what exactly you'd like to play.

The new edition is all compatible with the Forgotten King cards, minis and tiles. So, if you want to use the heroes, tiles and monsters from FK, getting that box set is the way to do it (none of the FK minis are getting resculpted here)

      What you are getting is:

      1- Three Rules sets
      - Explore- for consul vs. hero players.
      - Arcade- full co-op mode
      - Legends- which can be played as RPG mode or Co-op campaign mode.
2- New tiles and minis as explained in the kickstarter main page.
3- Some stuff that wasn't promised originally:
      - The Pet Parade expansion (with new tiles and cards)
      - the new King Starfire model, and
      - more new treasure cards and dice above and beyond what was promised in the kickstarter, as well as some new cards and components for playing Arcade mode.

The rules have been revised since FK. If you want to see the revisions, check out the playtest documents. On the other hand, there aren't any rules-changes to the cards and tiles- so the old upgrade deck will still work just fine with the new rules.

I'm really disappointed to see the Arcade Deck go away. That was the reason I picked up Forgotten King in the first place, and I was looking forward to seeing it getting a few slight tweaks, instead of being tossed out entirely.

More and more, this SDE seems to be moving further and further away from a game I want to play (and the game that I kickstarted).

I think removing the consul deck is a double edged sword.
I was never a big fan of it anyway, to random, we had rounds with a spawn after spawn etc. so I am ok with removing "some" of the randomness and giving the monsters tactics specific to the room/scenario.
But I know how players can be. If they know "exactly" what is going to happen, they will calculate that and use it to their advantage (oh, you will have the lowest HP, go in that corner, so the enemy will stupidly follow you).
So maybe some kind of deck would be good, but not one that determines everything. Like 15 Card, 7 are "do as told in the adventures", 2-3 are "do as told in the adventures, but if you have to target a hero, attack "the next on the list" (second lowest HP, second closest,...), 1-2 are "freenzy, each monster attacks the closed hero with a +2 Stars attack, ... I think you get the gist. Mainly a "you know what is likely to happen, but be prepared for a nasty surprise" Deck

Except for that, I like the idea.

Can you provide us with the graphics for the hero cards and whatever else we might need to get jamming out some test games ? I would love to print some tiles for dungeons or put them up on a tv in the table.

So Arcade rules and mechanic is... there are none.

      That’s creative.

I'm not sure I understand about the Arcade mode. Are you saying we won't be getting some kind of 'AI' deck or something similar to produce actions for the Consul?

If there will be just guidelines on how the Consul should behave, that sounds like it will be rather boring and easily defeated by players.

There needs to be something that introduces some kind of random element or the Arcade mode will get stale quick.

@ninjas!! I've sent several emails to verify my pledge is still good, which started a week before the new starfinder kickstart, yet have not heard anything back yet? When can I look forward to hearing back about my concerns via the emails I have sent?

    20. Nicholas E. Kelsch on October 11

Why are none of these models with slottas attached and in the slots? Why would you show us models which represent what we are getting which don't represent what we are getting? Or will these models come glued on top of a base with an empty slot?
      -
Please clear up why these models are 2 years old and don't seem to represent "mold pops" as they lack the basing and slottas we would see from a mold pop like from RRI.

      @ Paul Hamblin,

The Crossover Deck is a lot of fun ^_^ contains a lot of different items and characters... even if you do not have the models for them you can use proxies, is really great value ^_^

Wow this "new" Arcade mode seems really poorly done and super uninteresting. It was the only thing I was pledging for and now it turns out to just be "everyone pretend you're the Consul" and the Arcade cards are useless now. That's complete crap.

    23. Nicholas E. Kelsch on October 11

Why are you showing us models from 2 years ago and molds which show ZERO progress on wave 1 items? You have been showing these midnight tower models from 2 years ago Gencon. None of that shows us a shred of progress.
      -
Where is wave 1 stuff which we are getting supposedly April 2018? Not 2-year old models which we won't see until 2019.

    24. Jon Pryor on October 11

Thanks for the update! in the Q/A bit can you guys please clearly answer which pledges are getting the new King Starfire model, I thought I was getting one now I am not sure... pledged at the "Explorer" level... thanks SPM!

Question: When can we expect to get a concrete answer about the Cat Burglar?

It's all just SO confusing, it's frustrating really. I own the original SDE with a crapload of expansions, never got or played FK. I was going to buy the conversion deck but I was told not to, that I should wait for this Kickstarter. Well, here I am, I backed at $200 and it's been such a long time. I have no idea what I'm getting, no idea what's compatible with what. Should I still get FK or the conversion deck? Seems like you can't get the deck anymore. I just bought the Arena game and seems like I can't play that either till this all delivers. A lot of money for a lot of waiting.. I guess it's my fault. Guess I'll play 1e for now.
