Female fighters far and wide started pouring in some immediate requests - as a result, we wanted to act fast to release TWO NEW PLEDGE REWARDS!
The Society Nine Initiation Flatbrim
Made of a super smooth pleather in the body, with faux croc leather detail on the flat brim and a Society Nine gold plated logo, this fierce hat is ready for your walkout. Snap-back helps you size for your fit. I had fighters ask for it...you got it.
The Bia Boxing Glove and MMA Glove BUNDLE!

Now that we hit our goal, at the request of several fighters, we are making a limited time offer for the remainder of our campaign - we are offering the Bia Boxing Gloves and MMA Gloves BUNDLED at a special price of $125 (a $150 value)!
Society Nine: For every female fighter. My name is Lynn and I’m a fighter. After running two Hood to Coasts, the Amsterdam Marathon and being a dancer for a lot of my life, I tried my hand at mixed martial arts out of curiosity and a desire to build up some more physical strength. I loved the fundamentals of Judo and Muay Thai, but I really took a particular liking to Krav Maga - so much so, that after four years I got my brown belt and ended up a kickboxing instructor. It changed my life. It helped me get over insecurities, built my self-esteem and grew my confidence.
In my years of training, I've constantly been frustrated by the lack of quality equipment available for women. Manufacturers think that taking the lowest-quality glove and turning it pink is what we need. I'm here to tell you that this way of thinking is dead wrong. And not just to tell you - to PROVE it to you. The fact is, women make up nearly 25% of the $50 billion (with a B) combat sports market (which includes fitness, product and entertainment) in North America alone.
I created Society Nine for the female fighter who trains in combat sports, and to also represent the every-female fighter in our lives, across all sports. By early morning or late evening, she’s a boxer, a grappler; a Crossfitter, a runner; a rock climber, a cyclist. By day, she’s your fierce mom, your sister; a student working two jobs and going to school; your local barista or waitress saving up for a dream. We are creating a movement and community that unites strong, empowered, diverse, fierce women who are fighting for more than physique. We are the brand for this community of badass women.
We represent badass women.
Society Nine isn't just about defying the shrink-it-and-pink-it product development that has dominated the combat sports market for so long. The biggest revelation I had in developing Society Nine came by way of my focus group - by getting to know all these different women, I started realizing we were hitting on something much deeper than a product. This group of women was physically strong, mentally empowered and diverse, fighting for power on their own terms.
Whether you're fighting in the gym, pumping a kettlebell or going about your day, we want you to be equipped for the strength of your movements and the beauty of your femininity. We want you to feel like the powerful women you are.
The designs for the first version of our boxing gloves and MMA gloves are inspired by the idea of shattering glass. If we want to celebrate the female fight, encourage physical diversity in fitness, and acknowledge femininity in strength and empowerment, Society Nine needs to exist. The female fight is greater than the sport. But the sport is where we begin.
What are we making?
We started by focusing our first products around boxing and MMA gear exclusively for women. We did this by addressing the most common problems for female fighters - fit and design.
In boxing, 16oz sized gloves are very common, but finding 12oz and 14oz gloves suitable for a woman can be a chore. You can google as many times as you like, and paw Amazon’s pages, but as women, it’s still a pain to figure out which brand, fit and price are best. There is no brand solely focused on our needs as serious athletes in the sport.
In MMA, gloves give women issues especially in terms of comfort and fit. Our hand proportions are NOT the same as mens, yet our “women’s small” is really more like a men’s small...and more often than not, turned pink.
So how did we fix this?
We studied every glove on the market to understand how they were constructed, what materials they used and how they fit
We asked different women who train in mixed martial arts what their frustrations and needs were. We asked pros, amateurs and everyday practitioners, as well as some trainers
We then reverse-engineered our gloves based on the best qualities of each, given by way of feedback from our focus group
What resulted was Society Nine’s first official design - the Bia ["bye-yuh"] collection, our first set of boxing and MMA gloves named after the Greek goddess of force and strength.
An MMA glove that conforms more naturally to a clenched fist for accurate striking and wrist stability
A pre-curved shape for the MMA glove, reducing the amount of hand strain on the fighter
- Triple foam padding in the MMA glove featuring a core layer of foam designed to better absorb the shock from punching
- A lightweight, mesh palm area in the boxing glove to ventilate the glove
We need to raise at least $25,000 in order to finish out our development and to place our first production orders. The additional $25,000 will enable us to show at this year's UFC Fan Expo. It's an opportunity for us to gain valuable face time with thousands of die-hard MMA enthusiasts, athletes, retailers and distributors and pro fighters!
Our first line of products, as part of the Bia collection, include:
The Bia Boxing Glove, made of premium leather and featuring a mesh palm area for ventilation, available in black/gold/dark raspberry mesh in 12oz - S, 14oz - M and 16oz - L sizes.
We'll include a pair of hand wraps with every pair of boxing gloves sold.
- The Bia MMA Glove, made of premium leather and featuring a triple foam core, available in black/turquoise in women's S, M and L

How Society Nine is Being Built
Society Nine has been quite a journey, one that has been a serious undertaking with a great team. We've taken the product and brand concepts from drawings and sketches, to several prototyping rounds in about 18 months. I worked with a focus group of pro, amateur and practicing female MMA fighters as well as various trainers to test my prototypes in several states. The positive response to the product, as well as the excitement around the potential for this brand community - this unique society of strong, empowered, diverse, badass women - encouraged me to take the big leap and make Society Nine a reality.
We have a personal relationship with a factory in Pakistan that specializes in mixed martial arts and boxing equipment with over a decade of production experience with some of the most well known boxing and MMA brands from North America and Western Europe. For our sportswear line, we are partnering with a factory in Los Angeles that is making some of the most well-known yoga and women's fashion activewear brands on the market.
You might be wondering how I was able to accomplish this in 18 months. My design partner has nearly 15 years of technical experience in apparel and textile engineering and design with some of the biggest outdoor performance and lifestyle brands in the world (and she's a badass woman herself.) My brand designer has formerly worked for Wieden+Kennedy, the marketing powerhouse behind well known brands like Nike and Facebook. My industrial and graphic designers are experienced in designing everything from soft goods to electronics. These guys helped bring my vision to life.
I've also been blessed with mentors who have extensive senior management and VP-level sales and marketing experience at some of the biggest sports brands in the world, including Nike, Adidas, Columbia Sportswear, Spyder Sports and Smartwool. Without their guidance, gut checks, constructive criticism and encouragement along the way, we would not be here.
I quit my full-time job and spent all of my personal savings making Society Nine a reality because I care about these women and this community I’ve discovered through my own personal journey as a fighter. The boxing gloves, MMA gloves and our initial four-piece concept sportswear line are nearly ready for production...but I need your help. In order to wrap up the final round of development and place the production orders, the minimum order quantities to produce with each factory are what you see set as the pledge quantities for each item.
Support me and this unique community of badass women, and I will work my butt off to grow Society Nine into the brand that women deserve.
This Kickstarter project is only the beginning of Society Nine's potential: new limited edition designs of our boxing and MMA gloves by different artists; an expanded sportswear line for performance and lifestyle, worn and represented by physically diverse and fit female fighters - in life and sport. I want to represent female fighters - ALL female fighters. Society Nine isn't just a combat sports brand. Help us get off the ground, and we will build a Society of fierce women.
Just in case...
Size Info - Boxing + MMA Gloves
- MMA Small: 4 5/8" from left to right across widest part of glove (knuckle area)
- MMA Medium: 4 3/4" from left to right across widest part of glove (knuckle area)
- MMA Large: 4 7/8" from left to right across widest part of glove (knuckle area)
As a rule of thumb, here are general guidelines for body-weight and size of boxing training gloves. These guidelines are taking into consideration if you train both bag AND sparring:
120lbs & down: 12oz or 14oz
120lbs – 150lbs: 14oz or 16oz
However, we are diverse women, and we each train differently!
So ultimately, remember this:
Proper fit should always be determined with hand wraps on.
Hand wraps are a fundamental need for your longevity in training. We'll be including a pair of hand wraps with every pair of boxing gloves sold. If after indicating your initial size to us, you receive and try them on and decide you want a different pair, we'll be happy to exchange it for you.
I wear a 12oz WITH hand wraps on.
- Boxing 12oz (Small) - with glove palm face UP: 5 3/8" across knuckle area
- Boxing 14oz (Medium) - with glove palm face UP: 5 5/8" across knuckle area
- Boxing 16oz (Large) - with glove palm face UP: 5 7/8" across knuckle area

Risks and challenges
We are confident we are set to hit the ground running, and we promise to do everything in our power to deliver! However, here are some snafus or challenges that we could run into.
- Our vendor lead times can be affected by any of the following, but not limited to: natural disasters (not kidding); unforeseen machinery or production issues; cultural holidays (i.e. Lunar New Year in China; sometimes holidays means factories shut down for a period of time)
- Fitting challenges: we want our apparel to be capable of fitting - both comfortably and flatteringly - on different types of women, within the range of our size chart. We foresee this being the biggest challenge in the development phase of our apparel samples. We want to make sure we do this right.
- Fulfillment: As a startup, we are still working hard to streamline our shipping processes. We are 100% committed to making sure we optimize this so that as soon as our production is complete, you receive a beautiful package filled with beautiful product in the estimated time we've committed to.
We promise to keep you updated regularly on our progress as well as any challenges that may arise and we welcome any questions or concerns you have along the way. By supporting Society Nine, you ARE a part of it - so please reach out to us at anytime.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
