Hello everyone and thanks for checking out this project on Kickstarter!
I thought I'd begin by explaining a little bit about who I am and why I'm so passionate about this project...
Most of you probably know me best as 'Social Work Tutor' and will have seen my writing on Facebook, read one of my articles for a newspaper or come across my blogs where I talk about the need to promote the good work we all do. If you're familiar with my writing then you're also likely to know just how much I care about Social Work and want to get the message out about how vitally important our work is in the modern world.
Or you might know me best for my memes...
I love being a Social Worker, I take great pride in the work we do and I believe that our profession really does help the world go round. We work with every type of person, in every type of place and with every type of need imaginable. From pre-birth to palliative care, we are there when life begins and when it ends; often there for people who have nobody else fighting for them.
Hearing from thousands of you every week, the message I get is that we all know what a difference we make, but that this work is often forgotten about and goes untold by everyone else. You also tell me how disheartening it can be when the mainstream media tend to focus on negative stories, you're asked to work harder but with less resources and your Government doesn't give you the credit you deserve.
The feeling is that nobody is getting the message out about what we really do, the challenges we face doing it and how we manage to do it so well.
There aren't many people standing up for Social Work.
So I sat and I listened to these problems for month after month, sharing my views with you all that I also believed the true tale of modern Social Work needed to be told.
Like you guys I waited for our Governments to 'get it', a newspaper to run a positive story or a TV company to show a programme that was a fair reflection of the work we do.
We waited, and waited, and waited...
Then I got sick of waiting and realised we had to do something, that we had to stand up and tell our own story about Social Work.
This project will help us do just that.
Stand up for Social Work will help us tell the stories from those of us on the frontline of practice, the tales that are so often lost.
We will hear from Adult's Workers, Children's Workers, Mental Health Workers, Youth Justice Workers, Drug and Alcohol Workers, Palliative Carers and Disability Teams (as well as many other areas of practice).
We will read of the work our support staff do and how our multi-agency colleagues work alongside us to ensure that the most vulnerable people in society are protected from harm.
Those who we work for will be able to tell their side of the story and we will get their account of how our work helped improve their lives, what we do well and how we can work better.
Our friends and family who see the sacrifices we make will also have their voices heard. We will find out what it's like to see your loved ones give so much of themselves to others and how it feels to lose quality time with family members who are out there caring for others instead.
Policy makers, politicians and academics will have their views heard as we see what they understood about frontline practice, what hopes they have for the profession and the advice they can offer those of us who are out there striving to make the world a better place.
Stand up for Social Work will take us across the world as we learn what it's like to practice in other nations; the issues that make us different, the struggles we share and our unified hopes for the future of our profession.
Each chapter of the book will see us picking up with another worker, client, loved one or policy maker as we find out what it's like to be in their shoes.
We will get their side of the story, find out what a day in their life feels like, see the impact of the work they do, explore the cost this has on them and hear of their hopes for the future of Social Work.
The good, the bad, the happy and the sad, this book will tell it like it really is and will be a true account of Social Work from those on the frontline of practice.
It will also have a healthy dose of my trademark Social Work humour...
I know that you're making a big investment in me by committing to buy this book before it's completed and you'll be putting a great deal of faith in me to deliver on my promises.
I hope that my past work shows you that I have the passion, commitment and ability to deliver the book that we all deserve.
But of course this isn't just about me, it's about all of us, and that's why having your input to crowd-fund this project is so important. Your investment means that you're part of the process and part of telling the story.
We've waited for so long for someone else to tell the story of what it's really like to be a Social Worker, now it's time to tell it ourselves.
Risks and challenges
The main challenge to doing this project well would be if I had to balance it with my current full-time job as a Social Worker. I already use most of my free time running my Facebook page, writing articles and campaigning for our profession; having to fit in writing a book on top of this would be impossible.
It's for this reason that I need to be able to sell enough books (as well as mugs, t shirts and other extras for those who can give a little more) to cover the travel and other expenses incurred over the six months this book will take to complete.
But don't worry... as soon as the book's done I'll be back on the frontline alongside all of you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
