Kevin and Melissa from Tantrum House run through the basics of Shifting Realms.
Shifting Realms is a game of colliding realms. Five realms are included — Elf realm, Dwarf realm, Orc realm, Goblin Pirate realm, and Priest realm — each unique in board layout, structures, story cards, tasks, and end conditions. To set up the game, three realms are selected at random, then players take turns until two out of the three realms' end conditions are met, at which point the game ends.
During the game, players send out scouts to collect resources, recruit soldiers to protect their scouts, build structures to gain powers, and earn victory points. Story cards and individual tasks add intrigue and complexity to game play.

Here are some quotes from the comments and videos:
I'm scratching my head at what this game really reminded me of and it really doesn't remind me of any game. Which is good... Unique mechanisms. Appeals to a wider audience. Ant Lab Games
It does come with an awesome dragon mini... we really enjoyed it. Tantrum House
Played 3x @ BGGspring. My favorite game of the con. A fresh take on a euro in ameritrash clothes. super fun. ze_stom
I got a chance to play this at GenCon 2017, and it was by far the most unique game I experienced there. cbs42
A truly engaging experience with tons of variability and many paths to victory. Can't wait to play it again! rcpete22
The modular system makes for an amazing amount of depth and combinations. Exploring each one and how it interacts with its neighbors creates a new game each and every time. skyknight

Soaring Rhino is a game company founded by brothers Craig and Jeff Van Ness. Soaring Rhino's mission is to provide innovative ideas, thoughtful design, and engaging games.

Gameplay is the most important factor when creating a Soaring Rhino game. We repeatedly tested, tweaked, and played Shifting Realms before thinking about art, pricing, or Kickstarter. We wanted to make a game that would be the flagship of our new company, and would become an instant classic.
Craig and Jeff have played all types of games all their lives, including strategy games, party games, card games, family games, miniature gaming, TCGs, RPGs, digital games (lots of digital games), and sports. As you can see below, Craig has designed games in many of those genres as well. Since Craig left Hasbro Games, Craig and Jeff have been working on many different designs and game styles. They decided that Shifting Realms would be their flagship game because it offers a fresh new look at Euro style gaming by incorporating a heavy theme, strong art, and a different gaming experience every time it’s played.
Here are Tom Vasel's reviews of some of the games Craig has designed:

Currently, we do not have plans to offer any Stretch Goals. Here’s why:
We have worked hard to deliver a great game. We have play-tested the included components and spent a considerable amount of time balancing the cards, powers, and features. We are also ensuring that the components in this game are already top-notch. We are extremely proud of this design, and we didn’t want to introduce elements which could make the game seem incomplete, or make future purchasers feel like they missed out on key game features. We want to ensure that we deliver the best value to all of our backers.
For those interested in extra content, we have plans to deliver the first expansion, Darkness Revealed, in 2018. This expansion has been and continues to be thoroughly play-tested and we will bring it to Kickstarter when we are confident that the new realms are as fun as the first five.
Special Thanks (in no particular order):
- All the playtesters!!!
- Conceptopolis, for creating the card art, gameboards, box cover art, and the rules cover art
- Colby Dauch, for helping us get Soaring Rhino started
- John Ariosa, for creating the structure tile art
- Jason Taylor, for creating the Shifting Realms logo and updating the graphics
- Nikki Pontius, for creating the Shifting Realms KS video
- Tantrum House, for the Preview and the Playthru
- Ant Lab Games, for the Playthru
- Pilot, for creating our company logo
- Chris Schubach, for editing the rules
- Matthew Van Ness, for creating the music for the KS video
Risks and challenges
Gameplay is our first priority: Even with over twenty years of game design experience under our belts, getting Shifting Realms to the fun strategic level it is now, wasn't easy. It took a lot of late nights, patient friends, and an amazing playtest group. We are happy to say that it is thoroughly tested and fun. Also, we have the first expansion, Darkness Revealed, well underway. We initially designed 8 realms. The first 5 are included in the base game, and the next 3 will be included in the first expansion.
In any project, especially one with this many components, there are many production and fulfillment challenges.
Basic game company knowledge: While Craig has been working in the boardgame industry for 20 years, this project doesn’t have the fulfillment powerhouse of Hasbro backing him up. Before he and Jeff set up their company, they reached out to Colby Dauch from Plaid Hat Games. He had been an invaluable mentor and gave us the rundown on how to successfully set up and start a game company.
As many of you know, our first Kickstarter was in February of 2017. We ended up cancelling mid-way when it wasn’t as successful as we had hoped. We took the advice of our backers and are now back with a much stronger campaign and a better game.
Updated Art- We commissioned the design firm, Conceptopolis, to redo the game boards to look more natural, and added additional unique elements to each board.
New Cover Art- Conceptopolis created an exciting new cover for the game, replacing the simple logo cover on the old version.
Graphic Art- Jason Taylor gave the graphics a much needed improvement.
Custom Meeples- The meeples in the game are now based on the Keepers, instead of the standard meeples.
Wood Pieces- All of the standard playing pieces, except for the custom meeples and the dragon, are made of wood.
Updated Cards and Instruction Book Cover Art: Conceptopolis created for Shifting Realms. Conceptoplis created all new card art, except for the Elf art, which was created by Craig Van Ness.
Manufacturing and Fulfillment Challenges:
Manufacturing Partner- Grand Prix International. GPI has been great to work with and has partnered with us to ensure that your game delivers a good value to you. GPI helped us with pricing out a multitude of options and helped to get us the custom pieces and upgraded components while keeping the game costs reasonable.
Fulfillment and shipping partner- We have gotten price quotes from several vendors, but do not yet have a final contract.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
