About

Kevin and Melissa from Tantrum House run through the basics of Mammoth.

In Mammoth players take on the role of mammoth herds by moving around the barren tundra and transforming the board from invading brambles and trees to beautiful flora and grasslands.  The game has both competitive and co-operative versions of play.

Players place octagon and square tiles to increase their flower patch or path. They can score maximum points by placing tiles efficiently to drop biocycle tokens.  The game ends when the last octagon tile is placed.  The winner is the player who gained the most points by successfully transforming the barren tundra.

In the co-op version of the game the players work together to accomplish a random color and path goal. The players play as scientists planning how they are going to guide their mammoths through the landscape. Players discuss what actions they want to take and then reveal the available actions for the turn. Players then choose their actions without discussion and then complete them in turn order. If the players succeed in accomplishing their goals and reach a required point total before the last octagon tile is placed, the scientists are successful and have transformed the bleak tundra into the vibrant Mammoth steppe.

Jonathan Liu from GeekDad reviewed a prototype copy of the game.

"Mammoth has some fun twists on the tile-laying genre."

About the co-op version

"...it does seem like the sort of puzzle that will take a lot of coordination (and maybe some luck) in order to succeed—a bit like actually reviving the woolly mammoth in real life,  I suppose.

Soaring Rhino is a game company founded by brothers Craig and Jeff Van Ness. Soaring Rhino's mission is to provide innovative ideas, thoughtful design, and engaging games. Craig worked at Hasbro for many years and designed 30+ games during his time there.   He brings an impressive pedigree to Soaring Rhino.

Gameplay is the most important factor when creating a Soaring Rhino game. Mammoth will be Soaring Rhino's third game. We take pride in making the best games we can. Here's some information and reviews about our other two games.

Shifting Realms, Soaring Rhino's first game, was successfully Kickstarted in 2018.  It is a mid-weight euro with a few unique twists and tons of replayability.

Craig and Jeff have played all types of games all their lives, including strategy games, party games, card games, family games, miniature gaming, TCGs, RPGs, digital games (lots of digital games), and sports. As you can see below, Craig has designed games in many of those genres as well. Since Craig left Hasbro Games, Craig and Jeff have been working on many different designs and game styles.

Craig was the lead designer on many great games while at Hasbro including Heroscape, Queen's Gambit, Sorry Sliders, Star Wars Epic Duels

Risks and challenges

Mammoth is Soaring Rhino's second game to be available on the Kickstarer platform. We learned a lot during our previous campaign and look forward to providing another great game to our backers.

One of the challenges in the development of this game was balancing the "cool bits" with providing value. We wanted Mammoth to be a game that a large cross section of people would buy and enjoy.

We are confidant in our manufacturing partner, Grand Prix International, will provide a quality game. They have a track record of excellence and have diligently worked with us to make sure this game comes to light.

We are eager to work with Funagain as our fulfillment partner. They also have a reputation that proceeds them and gives us confidence.

A final challenge associated with Mammoth is the possible increased tariffs that will affect companies importing products from China such as ourselves. We struggled to get the MSRP for Mammoth at a level that gave the consumer great value. With a 25% increase in production cost, we may have to increase our targeted MSRP. Fortunately for the Kickstarter backers this will not affect them in any way.
