About this project
Snooks is the first British ski & snowboard clothing brand dedicated solely to women. YEP. Girls only!
Susie & Sophie founded Snooks to finally give female skiers and snowboarders awesome technical outwear that really fits and looks rad. No more tight pink jackets with glittery butterflies. We should not have to settle for second best. Females ride just has hard as anyone on the mountain or on the dryslopes..... Women in snowsports are formidable, and there should be products out there which reflect that.
We want YOU to be part of the journey with us, by helping us Kickstart Snooks and take our awesome outerwear to as many female riders-in-need as possible. Funds raised will go into the production of our brand new outerwear - The Union Series, and growing our brand to reach new markets. So Join The Charge, and let's make it happen! Girls, get OUT of the men's section, SNOOKS has arrived.
We've had one heck of a journey so far, with our first season of testing the water firmly under our belts. Our first ever outerwear range, the Reviver Series, went down a treat.
Snooks has come along way in just two year; from an idea on the sofa to a game-changing brand providing high-quality, made in Britain outerwear for women.
Check out these girls doing their thing in Snooks gear - shared with us on social media!
Stepping up a Gear...
We've refined our designs, fine-tuned the technical aspects, and are ready to lead the charge in shaking up the industry. But we want YOU to join us as our journey gets even more exciting!
We have been sampling and testing our outerwear designs for next season, and with your help, we will be ready to take our wonderful Union series into production!
The name SNOOKS comes from an old English phrase, to ‘cock a snook’. It's a very British, derisive gesture... a slightly politer middle finger! It's our cheeky way of saying it’s time things changed. We are breaking the mould of our male-dominated industry, cocking a snook, and doing it for the girls.
We believe women deserve products that are made for them, not made for the stereotypes of women. Snooks is a brand founded and run by women who snowboard & ski. We understand what women want, expect and need in their gear. So we strive to create outerwear that fits how it should fit. Our outerwear is made in the UK to a very high standard of quality and technical performance, because we know ONLY the best will do.
Frustrated by the lack of decent gear out there? Too pink? Too tight? Too short? Buying from the men’s section? We feel you. Your frustration is the reason SNOOKS was born. We focus on creating gear that really fits real women.
Make a Change
It’s a way of thinking, a way of life, and a passion for change. We are challenging outdated stereotypes in the worlds of action sports, fashion, and business.
We work from the ground up and we listen to what YOU want, and reflect that in the gear we create.
Got an idea for an awesome product you'd like Snooks to create!? Let us know in the comments, and we will bring the most awesome ideas to life!
Supporting British Talent
We've had the honour of sponsoring two immensely talented athletes this year. Thea Fenwick, the "snowboarder on skis" is one to watch - this crazy talented young girl has been killing it on the freestyle scene, and is out in the USA training at the world-renowned Windell's Academy.
Angelica Sykes is a freeride snowboarder - one of those fearless, throw myself off a cliff with style and poise kind of girls. She's had a great season on the Swatch Freeride World Tour, and been involved in some mega projects!
This winter, we have a handful of awesome additions to the Snooks Team, so watch out, world!
Encouraging Women & Girls in Snowsports
We've supported a tonne of events in the UK and the Alps, including hosting our very own girls' freestyle night, with many more in the pipeline! We are advocates for having a go, trying your hardest and supporting fellow skiers and snowboarders. It's not about how awesome your bag of tricks is, it's about having a whole lot of fun, building your confidence and getting back on the horse, however many times you fall! We say if you're not falling over, you're not trying hard enough.
We’ve had a pretty successful first season, with so many awesome girls supporting and believing in what we are doing. Your support is incredible and we couldn’t have done it without you all. We’ve been involved with so many awesome events and wonderful people. The Telegraph Ski & Snowboard Show, London, SLIDE snowsports trade show, Snowboxx in Avoriaz, France, and sponsored some rad uk events, including K-Jam, Farmers Jam, Splash Fest and our very own snooks girls freestyle night!
We Had a Problem...
Snowboarding addiction - something we both are afflicted with. However, this wasn't the problem... we have experienced first hand the struggles of finding women’s snowsports gear that fits comfortably, looks good and performs technically – often resorting to buying men’s snowboard gear. Why can't we find decent gear?! We are fed up of buying men's stuff because it actually fits properly, and looks rad.
"Pink it and Shrink it"
We found the lack of quality choices in women’s gear to be a common problem amongst our female ski and snowboard friends. A lot of them were complaining that women’s jackets and trousers are too tight and short, too girly, and not as technical as the men’s gear that’s available. You may have heard this being called the “pink it and shrink it” effect.
We Had No Choice...
So looking into this further, we found that women actually have around five times less choice in ski and snowboard shops than men. So for every awesome women’s jacket… there are 5 awesome men’s jackets. We spotted a great opportunity to combine our passion for snowsports and our dreams of starting a business. So we because we literally had no choice, we created our own brand that solves the pink it and shrink it problem!
We need gear that is technical and comfortable, that fits right… in all the right places… and actually protects us out there in the harsh mountains, so we can focus on the fun bit – skiing and snowboarding!!
How Did We Do It?!
Realising we both have truck loads of enthusiasm, passion and ambition, but not the knowledge of fashion, textiles, design, manufacturing OR business, we had to find a way to equip ourselves with the skills required to make Snooks a success. It didn't happen straight away and the learning curve has been super steep but it's been an amazing ride so far.
We both graduated from Loughborough University and fortunately they have a wonderful graduate business incubation hub called The Studio. We were so honoured to be awarded a place on the highly sought after programme! Here, we have shared an awesome office space with like-minded budding young entrepreneurs and have learnt a million and one things about the world of start-up business.
We know it’s summer right now, and it’s all about the shorts and flip flops, splashing around in the sea and sun… BUT, if you pledge today, we will ship your fresh new snooks gear out to you in time for the start of the winter season. You won’t even have to worry about getting kitted out, you can just get out there and shred! Not only will you get an exciting package at the start of the Winter, but you will become an exclusive member of the Snooks Founders Club, with exclusive discounts for LIFE, and a free Snooks beanie at the start of every single winter for the first 30 backers pledging over £50! WOW.
Risks and challenges
We promise to ensure that wherever in our power, key deadlines are upheld to make sure delivery times are accurate. As this is the second time we are manufacturing a range we have already built good relationships with suppliers and are better equipped to order what from who and when to do so. However, we have learnt that in the world of manufacturing, there can be delays and minor hiccups - we will keep all our backers informed every step of the way!
Communication across suppliers and manufacturers - following on from previous we will use our experience from project managing the first range to pre-empt any issues with delivery times of materials which may have a knock on effect with the manufacturing process by making sure ample time is allocated to cater for any arising issues.
Quality - quality control will be active throughout the process and the final sample before the run goes ahead will be scrutinised before approving production. We will have a contract in place to ensure each unit off the line adheres to the gold seal sample.
The team - in the case where one of the 2 co-founders could not be present due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances, there is a central cloud based system where standing operating procedures can be found, meaning all process could be picked up by a suitable stand-in. All communication is tracked through a CRM system, making it easy for things to be picked up where they were left.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
