New online FPS survival, overrun by a Machine Army. Players join Factions, salvage parts, craft tech, build bases & compete for second!
About this project
The Fight for Survival Against the Machine Army!
Second To One is a tech-crafting survival game for PC and Mac, where humans are no longer the top of the food chain. Unlike most of the survival genre, this is not a zombie survival game, and is much more than your typical stone-age survival game. This is a world that is overrun by a merciless Machine Army, who has equipped themselves with powerful current day weaponry. Now it's up to the intelligent surviving humans, like YOU, to face your enemies head on!
Welcome to Second Place!
This is a game where the Number 1 contender on the food chain is a merciless Machine Army, capable of resourcing materials to build more of themselves. Align yourself with a Faction, carry out missions, and meet others along the way. You may be the link to a long lasting alliance between human Factions, and together you may overthrow whatever Faction currently rests at the top of the pile.

Why Kickstarter Funding?
We are going with a INVITE ONLY ALPHA & BETA, meaning only those who back this Kickstarter have an opportunity to participate in the process! Once the game is finished and released to Steam, all those who backed this project receive the appropriate amount of Steam Keys for either Mac or PC! This Kickstarter will allow us to release the initial Alpha versions by covering the bare minimum required costs:
- Licenses: To release anything, we must possess licenses for Unity Pro, uLink Networking, and Mixamo tools.
- Development: The money raised to continue full time development and adhering to strict iteration cycles, which is key to hitting target dates.
- Server Costs: We are working in part with Amazon's lightning fast gaming servers in bulk for the most cost efficient & lowest latency server hosting from Alpha, Beta, and through the Release, ensuring everyone ALWAYS has a place to play on multiple servers! (Server Admins will be picked from the community via their forum and social media representation and professionalism, so make sure you sign up on SnDStudios.com/forum !)
- Models: The most cost efficient way for adding new content as the community begins to discuss ideas and flesh out the next level of maps, points of interest, traps, characters, and weapons.
- Artists/Modelers/Animators: Any amount raised over the initial funding goal will allow us to bring more valuable team-members on board!

In a world torn to pieces by an enemy who has deemed mankind as too inefficient to exist, the massive Machine Army quickly advanced to every city within days. The footsoldier, also known as the Reaver, is equipped with a mounted shotgun that fires large slugs. The Destroyer model is best known for its speed and twin mounted miniguns.
Behind the scenes, there is the RT-CT, aka Rugged Terrain Cargo Transport, which runs between Machine assembly plants to deliver materials. Other models have been reported, but have been elusive in capturing hard evidence of their design and their roles within the Machine Army.
Human ingenuity and salvaged components from the Machines can be turned into powerful items to give Players an edge over extinction. After taking a robot offline, Players can salvage parts like batteries, parabolic antennas, gun parts, logic boards, power cables, and lenses.
Craftable Technology from Machine Parts:
- Security Cameras
- Wall mounted or field ready Sentry Guns (Shotgun or MG)
- Computer Systems
- Communication Devices
- Upgraded Battery powered utilities
- Elevators
- Alarms
- Remote Controlled Door Systems
Factions in [Second To One]:
- The Militants
- The Survivalists
- The Bandits (only joinable by Players who betray their own teams)
- Player-Made Factions
Both NPC and Player-Made Factions can be outfitted with rentable lockers, making great starting points for new players, as well as ideal locations for trade zones to sell and trade items with protection from the Faction's guards.
The leaders of NPC Faction camps will often require Players to report to the base for Missions. Every move from rival Factions is a direct threat to your Faction's way of life, whether stealing from you, killing your allies, or moving in on your territory. The Leaders of Factions call the shots, and when they call you'd better answer if you want to stay on good terms.
Pull Your Weight & Give 'Em Hell!
- Search & Destroy: Track a problematic Player or NPC and eliminate.
- Raids: Players must launch an attack against rival Factions
- Rescue: Assist in hostage rescue missions at rival-controlled POI's
- Vehicle Mission: Ordered to retrieve a vehicle, or tasked to take one
- Convoy: Protect or attack a Faction's Cargo Transport from enemies
A Point of Interest (or "POI") can be taken control of by a group of Players, expanding the territory of a Faction. Upon controlling a POI, common loot spawns have a chance of yielding much more valuable and hard to find items, in turn making it an ideal place for rivals to compete over. Rivals who overthrow a controlled point of interest can often receive rewards for doing so.
Vehicles are hard to obtain in the remote forested areas of the game. Here, they can either be earned or stolen. If a Player decided to make a dangerous journey to the City zones, which are heavily controlled by the Machine Army, vehicles can be found, and possibly fixed up to drive back to bases. Vehicles can be outfitted with locker storage to act as a mobile base, mountable top side gun turrets, or potentially used in last ditch efforts to become car bombs to destroy chunks of bases.
Items can provide both beneficial and detrimental effects, sometimes at the same time. Abusing stat boosting items can often have side effects after a few minutes of use, but can sometimes be the deciding factor between living and dying.
Immediate Benefits of Items:
- DBol steroids: (+Strength/+Stamina) Increase melee dmg and sprint
- Caffeine Pills: (+Accuracy/+Stamina) Improve aim and reduce recoil
- Morphine: (+Health,+Stamina) Instant health recovery and sprint
- Antibiotics: Reduce sickness from infections or disease
- Cloth Bandages: Bind a deep wound and prevent it from bleeding out
- Painkillers: (+Health) Instant health recovery
Items range from no side effects, to some after a few minutes, to only after "abusing" the items. Side effects range from slow movement, dizziness, nausea, or result in dependency where the they no longer provide benefits, but required to keep player from dizziness and death.
Easy to use and manage, the crafting system of the ToolBench, Gun Crafting, and Munitions Press use a fully graphical crafting system makes it easy to pick what you want to build, and what parts you have or need t0 craft the recipe. There are no time "building times", but items can only be crafted 1 at a time. After returning from exploring, use a crafting utility to check for notifications of new items that have been discovered!
Current version has an expensive "EZ Bore & Rifle" gun crafting machine that can be built, which allows crafting of military grade weapons. Check out our STRETCH GOALS and see the idea for how we would like to proceed in getting a player from basic, selfcrafted weapons to the powerful Military grade weapons!
Firepower of [Second To One]:
- Pistols: Glock 19, Beretta M9, Python Revolver
- SMGs: Mac 10, Thompson M1928A1, HK UMP
- Assault: AK-47, AR15A4, M4 Commando
- Rifles: M40A5, MSR
- Heavy: Pump Shotgun, SPAS-12
- More to come: RPG, Flamethrower, Mortars, and more!
Even in its early stage, Players can craft both base and turret structures to stake their claims around the map. Players craft a ground level floor, place pillars to support a ceiling, which also support walls/doorways. Place either sturdy wood doors or metal sheet doors to keep intruders out.
Doors, like crafted technology, cannot be destroyed by melee or bullets. However, a Player's doors, walls, and crafted technology are all susceptible to grenades, improvised explosives, or more powerful explosive satchel charges.
Currently, animals provide the best source of life sustaining food in the game. Most animals will charge when they feel threatened, so watch out for wild boars, starving wolves, and ferocious bears.
Domestication will play a big role in future versions of the game, where animals can eventually be coerced into friendly states. Once docile, animals can be trained to fight other animals, and eventually other humans when instructed by their Owners. Once a Player is a pet's Owner, this pet could even be sold or traded off to another Player who would then assume its Owner role.
A trained wolf or bear could alter the outcome of a PVP encounter! They continue attacking after their Owner's have died, as well!
Resourcing provides the player with all the building blocks to most craftable items. Initially, when a Player spawns with only a blunt pipe weapon, they can only resource easy-to-get sources like Wood Piles and Small Rock piles. Innovate and build new sharper, durable tools, to obtain better resources from chopping trees or mining the 3 major types of rocks and minerals in the game (Coal bearing rock, Sulfur bearing rock, and Metal bearing rocks). These larger rock sources are spread around the map, and are often competed over, so come prepared or make some trades!
Our FUNDING GOAL is set to get the game into Private ALPHA & BETA (those who backed this Project on Kickstarter).
Every dollar raised above the funding goal will be to bring on much needed team-members.
What is GREAT about this project compared to others, is all work has been done by 1 person, not a team of people who all get a slice of funding. So from here, armed with the backing from this Kickstarter, we can acquire EXPERIENCED professionals who can match the pace and quality of work already demonstrated by SnD Studios! So we are in the best possible position, and can only become more agile!
- Character Creation Menu! Play the character you actually want! Everyone likes playing as themselves, so Players should choose their gender, body type, race, and customize their features to better represent who THEY are as a gamer! We have an incredibly diverse culture, and games should reflect as much!
- Enhanced Weapon Skill & Crafting! Players start off knowing three homemade types of weapons: handheld, long range, and close quarters! The more times an item is crafted and used, the Player gains experience with that type, eventually unlocking a Prototype of that category. Basic categories branch out into multiple prototypes, until a Military grade version crafting recipe is understood by the Player! This makes Player's gun usage affect their firearm skills, as well as their overall value by learning how to craft specific weapons that other groups may not have access to!
- In-Game Map! No need to rely on a website to tell you where you are in these giant maps. The more a player explores an area, the faster and more accurately they "sketch" out the area in their handmade map! (To Be Determined by community: If a player sketches out a map, is it something he can trade off and sketch onto another players map? This could make for an interesting way to transfer knowledge from an undroppable item, which the Player can use as a way to sell their services for other items or weapons!

Risks and challenges
There are always risks when it comes to backing projects on Kickstarter. My goal was to create the foundation of the game -- working prototype, proper multiplayer networking, deployable server build -- and present it to Kickstarter once I was completely sure of the game quality and direction.
My biggest challenge will be managing every role from now til alpha release, as I have been for some time already. Another fun challenge is to find individuals who stand out and have a desire to lead others, in hopes they can help out when it comes to forums and other public facing tasks.
