Hello and welcome to my Kickstarter campaign, and thank you for your support. I hope that you enjoy the pens I have selected for this campaign as much as I do. This project offers you the opportunity to create your own personal writing instrument by choosing your favorite style of pen and the wood type you would like it made from. You will find the backer rewards below followed by information about why I am here at Kickstarter and a little about who I am.
This Keychain has a secret... a secret compartment that is. Hide money, notes, toothpicks, and more inside for convenient access when out and about.
Update - 07 Feb 2017
So, we hit our stretch goal of $5000 and as promised I have added another reward level. It's a Smart Phone/Tablet Stand with a built in Stylus!
The Smart Phone Stand adjust to the thickness of any Smart Phone or Tablet and has a felt pad on the clamp so it won't scratch your screen. The stylus tip is a flexible nylon material that works great on any touch screen surface. It adjusts by simply twisting the stylus tip to open or close the clamp.
The Slim Ballpoint is our most popular pen with the ladies due to it's feminine shape and slender size. A great pen for those with petite hands. It is a twist style pen, twist one way to extrude the ink cartridge and the other to retract it. The ink refill is a Cross style ballpoint available at any Office Supply Store or on my website.
A designer letter opener! This reward will be available by itself for $35, or if you would like to add it to your existing pledge - just add $25, a $10 savings for getting both! You will have the choice of the same woods and colors as the pens, and the plating options will be Chrome or Gold. I can also make it from the same wood as your pen so that you have a matching set.
The Sierra is a great "Purse Pen". It is shorter than the other pens in this campaign, so it fits well in shirt pockets, purses, and smaller cases. This is a "Twist" pen, turn to extract and retract the ink refill. Comes with a Parker style refill that can be purchased at any Office supply store or my website.
The Cigar is a large, handsome, and robustly built pen, yet fits amazingly well in your hand for easy writing. For those who like a heftier feel, this is the one. It has a "twist" mechanism to extract and retract the ink and comes with a Parker style refill that can be purchased at any Office supply store or my website.
The Churchill Roller Ball has a handsome appearance and is the lightest in weight of our Roller Ball Family. The classic cigar shape is popular among executives, and the Schmidt Roller Ball refill writes as smooth as silk. The cap is post-able, as it will set on the top of the pen when in use.
The Faith Pen is named such because of the representations of the Christian faith in the pen. The end cap is engraved with crosses that encircle the cap, and the clip has a Fleur-de-lis emblem reference.
In the middle ages, the lily and its Fleur-de-lis symbol overlapped greatly into Christian religious art. The three petals of the lily were associated with the Holy Trinity, and is used in this design to symbolize the virtues of "Faith", "Love", and "Hope" as depicted on the center band.
The braided rope depicted on the center band and the end cap is another representation of the Holy Trinity, where-as rope braided from three strands is much stronger than a single rope.
The Faith pen is available in a twist style Ballpoint version as well as in Roller Ball and Fountain Pen versions with removable and post-able cap.
14 Jan 17 - Update!!!
I have decided to offer Olive Wood from the Holy land of Bethlehem as an option for the Faith Pens. This is a beautiful wood with special meaning to those of the Christian Faith. All of my olive wood is sustainably collected from annual trimming or already fallen branches.
The Jr. Gent II Roller Ball has a stately appearance featuring sleek lines with a small gold trim line in the center band. A well balanced pen that writes smooth as silk. The cap is post-able, meaning that it will screw to the top of the pen when in use.
The Roller Ball pen comes with a Schmidt ceramic ball Roller Ball refill. The Fountain Pen comes with Schmidt Fountain Pen cartridge refill and a Siphon Converter, so you can use your own favorite bottled ink. The fountain pen nib is a high quality 6mm German made steel nib.
Can't decide between a fountain pen and roller ball, then this one is for you. The Triton Convertible switches from one to the other by simply screwing the desired fountain pen nib or roller ball nib to the body. Just as easy as replacing the ink cartridge. This pen has a post-able cap, allowing you to add the weight of the cap when writing, or leaving it off, depending on which feel you like better.
It comes with a Schmidt Roller-ball refill with ceramic ball for extremely smooth writing as well as a Schmidt Fountain Pen refill and a Siphon Converter, so you can use your own favorite bottled ink. The fountain pen nib is a high quality 5mm German made steel nib.
The Jr. Emperor is one of the finest pens available. Featuring durable plating and unique and intricate hand carved pattern that has been richly coated in 22K gold. It is one of our largest and the heaviest of our pens, but extremely well balanced. Because of it's weight and size it is designed with a non-postable cap.
All of the casting work has been meticulously done by hand, with a lot of care and attention to detail taken with every step along the way. Making this pen truly fit for a king!
The Jr. Emperor Roller comes with a Schmidt Roller-ball refill with ceramic ball for extremely smooth writing. The Jr. Emperor Fountain includes a Schmidt Fountain Pen refill and a Schmidt Siphon Converter, so you can use your own favorite bottled ink. The fountain pen nib is a high quality 6mm German made steel nib.
This presentation box comes with every pen available in the campaign. It is a durable cardboard construction with foam insert to protect the pen. It also has a magnetic clasp to ensure the top stays closed.
This beautiful display box comes with the Emperor pen at no additional cost in your choice of Bamboo, Rosewood, or Black. It is made of solid wood and has a glass insert to show off your pen as it sets safely down in the foam padded lining inside.
If you would like one of these for any of the other pens, just add $20 to your pledge and request it. No need for extra shipping.
Heritage Fountain Pen Nibs
The heritage nib shown above are the nibs I will be using for the fountain pens in this project. They are high quality German Made nibs that will come to you precision tuned for a smooth writing experience. These are steel nibs, and they are not considered flex nibs, although they do give a little flex.
This fountain pen I made a while back shows an all chrome German 6mm Nib on the pen.
Available Wood Types and Colors
You will be able to select your wood of choice from the list of Spalted and Burl woods I have available.

Thanks to your overwhelming response, we have hit our initial goal of $1000 in less than 4 days! Because of this we are setting some stretch goals.
16-Jan-2017 Update - Stretch Goal of $2500 - At this level, we will be able to purchase the equipment needed to improve our setup for the craft fairs we attend this would include chairs, an additional table, banners, and display cases.
To help reach this goal we are offering a new reward level - A designer letter opener!
18-Jan-2017 Update - $2500 Stretch Goal Reached! So, we made the $2500 stretch, all backers of the campaign will receive upgraded gift boxes.
Anyone who would have received the Presentation Box will now receive an upgraded presentation box with Satin Liner! (see updates for picture)
Anyone who gets the Designer Letter Opener will receive a Leatherette box that holds the Pen and Letter Opener Set. (see updates for picture)
Next Stretch Goal - $5000 - can we do it? Our next stretch goal is set at $5000 which will allow me to purchase some more equipment for the shop (garage). In addition, I will be able to purchase more wood and parts so I can have inventory for the craft shows I have coming up. This campaign is helping me to take my pens to the next level, so thank you all again!
If we reach the $5000 mark, then everyone will get an extra refill for each pen they receive. In addition, I will also be adding another reward tier or possibly 2. I'll post more when we get close, so get the word out.
07-Feb-2017 - Update - We reached $5000 with only 3 days remaining!
Everyone will receive an extra refill with every pen! Also, I have added a new reward level. I know it's a little late in the campaign, but I said I would. So, I've added the Smart Phone Stand and Stylus! You can add it to your existing pledge for $25. A great gift for any of your Techy friends that are always using a Tablet or Smart Phone.
09-Feb-2017 - Update - New Stretch Goal -$10,000
I know it's a little late in the campaign with less than 48 hours to go, but since we reached the $5000 stretch I wanted to add one more stretch goal. If we can get to $10,000 this would enable me to purchase a Laser Engraving Machine in addition to the other equipment I am already planning for. Here's the kicker - If we reach this stretch, I will offer personalized engraving on every item for this project - at no additional cost! That means free engraving of name or logo on every pen or other items if you want.
Why Kickstarter? A few reasons why I'm here doing this campaign.
The first reason I'm using Kickstarter is to give me the opportunity to work with some new materials and expand my offerings. I love turning pens and would like to be able to offer more than my current selections. The funding from this campaign will allow me to do that. 50% of the funds will go toward fees, taxes, supplies and the materials to make the rewards you have selected. The remaining 50% will go toward materials and supplies as well as some new chucks for my lathe that will enable me to do more custom work and expand my offerings.
I am also using this campaign for information and research. By allowing each of you to create your own pens, I can see what is popular in the market, without having to poll the public. This information will enable me to produce the products that my customers would prefer to have.
Kickstarter will also help me keep costs down while I generate some much needed revenue. Your pre-orders allow me to produce what you want and not have to carry as much inventory. The work produced during this campaign is tailored to the exact needs of my backers.
About my work
For me, there has always been something special about a favorite pen, so I want to create fine, quality writing instruments for you. Each one is handcrafted, one at a time, with attention to detail, fit, and finish. If you also have a love of fine pens and want to start or add to your collection, or maybe simply to have a special gift for someone, I hope you will consider backing this project.
My pens are all finished with a high-gloss acrylic coating to not only highlight the grain and colors in the wood, but to protect it during daily use. I use this finish because it lasts and will not require re-finishing for many years, unlike the wax based finishes that need to be touched up several times a year in heavy use.
A little about me
I run a small website SnazzyPenz.com where I sell the pens that I make. I am a Christian, husband, step-father, veteran, chef, teacher, and a woodworker who pays the bills by drafting architectural drawings for Ashton Woods Homes.
I have always liked fine detail work, the smaller and more delicate, the better. From plastic and wood models, to micro-miniature repairs to circuit card assemblies, even custom cakes, I've always enjoyed working with my hands. Even though I enjoy being creative with many mediums, wood is one of my favorite.
The patterns and designs that the grain creates has always intrigued, and often surprised me with its great variety. This is why I love turning pens so much. It is fine detail work, delicate, yet rewarding. I also love knowing that each of my pieces is a usable piece of art.
I have worked with many types of wood, acrylics, antler, and even leather to create many of my pens, but my favorite is burls and spalted woods. The grain and coloring is so unique in every piece, and they always turn out with the most interesting patterns, so this campaign will allow me to turn many more pens in these types of wood.
So - What is a burl you ask.
A burl is an abnormal tree growth caused by some kind of stress to the tree, such as insect infestation, a virus, injury, or fungus. The tree reacts by growing around the area, which causes it to have many small knots, dormant buds, and voids. It makes the wood much less stable to work with, but produces some of the most beautiful grain patterns. You never know what you might get from a burl, because each one is completely unique.
What is Spalted Wood?
Spalting in wood is any difference in color that is caused by fungi, usually found in already cut or dead wood, but sometimes in stressed areas of the living tree as well. It is technically part of the rotting process, but can be controlled in the correct environment. Spalting causes week or "punky" sections in the wood, so it is typically stabilized with some form of resin to make it workable.
Below is and example of some burl wood that had some spalting occur. This is the grey coloring throughout. The front piece with no grey has no spalting.
Common Questions, Answers
Yes, you can pledge for more than one item! When you get to the "Manage my Pledge" step, you can manually change the pledge amount. Simply add the items you want together, but only add shipping once. That is your new pledge amount!
Reward Delivery -- I will start production and delivery of the rewards as soon as the surveys come in. Completion of the rewards will be done in the order they were pledged, so pledge early! I plan on delivering all rewards by the end of May. If you choose not to wait, other options are available on my website.
Pen Refills -- Every pen is refillable! Ballpoints will take two main types -- Cross and Parker style refills. Rollerball will take Schmidt or most other Roller Ball refills. The fountain pens take a cartridge or you can use the included siphon converter for your favorite bottled ink.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you just can't contribute but still think this is a cool project, that doesn't mean you can't help:
Share my website! www.SnazzyPenz.com
Get the word out and make some noise about this campaign. Share this project on your social media using the "share" links above. I'd truly appreciate it!
I sincerely thank you for taking the time to consider my campaign.
I wish you the best in all of your creative endeavors,
A few things to help you receive your item in a timely manner:
1. The email you have listed on Kickstarter MUST be a valid email that you check frequently. You will receive a survey at this email to make your selections of wood and plating style. The longer it takes for you to respond, the longer it will take to get your item(s).
2. Please make sure your address is correct when you write it in your survey, as this is what I will be using to ship your product(s) to. I will copy and paste your address exactly as you write it in your survey. If your rewards are returned to me due to a bad address, I will contact you and you must repay for shipping.
3. If your address changes after you have filled out your survey but before your rewards have shipped, please send me a message and I will update your address.
4. I cannot ship to international P.O. Boxes. Please provide a physical address or ask a friend or relative if they will allow you to have your rewards shipped to their home.
5. Please make sure that your credit card information is up to date on Kickstarter. If it is not up to date, then your pledge will be declined once funding has ended and you will be dropped as a backer. Nobody wants this.
Risks and challenges
While every investment comes with some risk, I believe that the risks for this project are quite low. I have all of the equipment I need to fulfill every reward. I also have several great suppliers for the hardware and woods I will need to complete the project.
The biggest hurdle I will have to overcome is if there is more participation than I expect. Given that I am the only one making these pens, and each is made one at a time to high standards, excessive participation may cause me to have to push the deadline for shipment. If this is the case, and I get funded early, I will offer some stretch goals and order materials for production before the close of the campaign.
I will keep all of you informed as to the status of production and shipping. I may have to ship out in batches as I complete the products, and will do my best to meet any needs for special occasions like birthdays and holiday gifts, so please let me know if you have need for that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
