S.N.A.P.S. Heroes:

We at S.N.A.P.S. Heroes have created a Therapeutically-designed Role Playing Game (TdRPG) for kids and teens called Heroes of Telluria.  We have made an introductory kit consisting of 8 Missions.  It is available for therapists in our therapeutic version and for the general public, in our standard version (Therapeutic instructions are taken out of the guidebooks and out of gameplay).  The game is available in electronic and physical formats!

Introduction to S.N.A.P.S. Heroes:

S.N.A.P.S. Heroes was created in 2012 by Drew Rowan M.D. and Lead Game Designer Daniel Rowan M.S. BSL, as a therapeutic game system meant to enhance the social skills of players.  However the S.N.A.P.S. Heroes system is as flexible as the imagination of the therapeutic team.  It is capable of addressing therapeutic areas beyond social skills.

Sessions are run with a Game Master, a therapist and up to 6 players.  During game play, our players take on the role of a powerful Hero.  The players work together with their team to complete their Mission, defeat the Boss Monster and save the day.  Sessions are meant to be an hour long, with most Missions requiring multiple sessions to complete. 

In the S.N.A.P.S. Heroes system, each class of Hero was designed to have their own strengths and weaknesses, making it so that no one player can complete the Mission all on their own.  Instead, the Heroes unique Skills serve to compliment one another, giving the players an edge if they are working together.  This process is facilitated by the Game Master, to ensure players are working together as a team, adjusting scenarios to address specific therapeutic concerns, if necessary.   

The S.N.A.P.S. Heroes system is turn-based, allowing players to plan and strategize with one another, before actually performing the actions that will allow them to resolve the challenges set before them.  This gives the Game Master time to employ therapeutic interventions, process with players and ensure players are communicating.

Enhancing Social Skills:

 The S.N.A.P.S. Heroes system is designed to intrinsically enhance and work on social skills in a variety of ways.  The first and foremost way is simply through the built-in mechanics of the game itself.  Just by playing the game, opportunities for teamwork, communication and strategizing are employed at every turn.  Remember, the system was designed so that no one Hero can win on their own.   Additional types of actions beyond the standard "move and attack" are used in the game system to further enhance communication and cooperation.  Teamwork is absolutely vital, as many enemies cannot be defeated by a single Hero alone.  Synergy (cooperation between two or more players that results in a combined effect more powerful than their separate actions) exists between all members of the team.  However it is up to the players to effectively make use of their skills and adapt when the Game Master inevitably challenges them.  From the need for teamwork and strategy inevitably comes communication and the generation of ample opportunities to practice social skills.  Conversely, not working together puts the Heroes at risk of a Game Over scenario.  If that occurs, the therapist and Game Master have an opportunity to address what went wrong and can discuss how the players will overcome the obstacle, before trying the Mission again. 

A Dual Run System:

S.N.A.P.S. Heroes is traditionally run via a dual system of Game Master and Therapist.  The Game Master and the Therapist each have a separate role.  This allows the S.N.A.P.S. Heroes sessions to employ a powerful therapeutic team, capable of addressing numerous target behaviors, beyond working on social skills.  The Game Master is knowledgeable on all things game related, having become familiarized with the Heroes, Villains and Mission(s) and the rules over all aspects of game play.  The Therapist is, at minimum a Master's level mental health clinician, capable of identifying the needs of a player, as well as being able to address any areas of concern that may arise during a player's session.  The Therapist meets with the Game Master before and after sessions to discuss these needs and concerns.  The Therapist also works together with the Game Master to incorporate creative, effective in-game interventions, even if these are outside of the interventions listed in the Game Master's guide.  Perhaps the Game Master will need to adapt a portion of the plot to better address the needs of a player, or a separate system might be employed to provide rewards to a player for making good choices.  Since each player will be unique, the dual mastery of Game Master and Therapist will help ensure a strong therapeutic team, capable of addressing whatever issues may present themselves during sessions. 

Effective Game Sessions:

 Additionally, our Game Master's Codex, Player's Guide and Monster Compendium Database contain all of the information a Therapeutic Team would need to start running sessions.  They are written for beginners to turn-based role playing games and are an invaluable tool to the Therapeutic Team.  With the knowledge and advice contained within these books, the therapeutic team can ensure that game sessions are being used to effectively address areas of concern.  They can also reinforce positive behaviors and make sure players are enhancing their social skills at every turn.

       Videos:

A Sticky Situation -  In this video, the player acting as the Ranger recklessly ran off into a forest where some strange activity was occurring.  The result of that recklessness was that the Ranger got ambushed.  He became trapped by a series of enemy webs and was slowly being Knocked Out.  With a little help from the Game Master, our players figured out a way to resolve the problem together as a team!

Venturing Into the Forest Maze: Teamwork - After determining that their objectives were taken somewhere into the forest, our Heroes decided to move forward as a group  This turned out to be a smart idea, since this forest constantly changes.  The flora in the forest comes to life in a way, attempting to separate the Heroes and have them stay lost forever.  Our Medic ended up falling prey to the effects of the forest, but by working together our players were able to get back on track!

Another Group Braves The Forest Maze: Creativity and Problem Solving - This group is also attempting to navigate the forest maze.  Having experienced the effects of being thrown off course before, these players know a system for getting the group back together.  They use a combination of  power-suit signals and calling out (in game).  However, even the best laid plans can go awry.  This causes the players to have to find more creative ways of implementing the tools at their disposal in order to overcome the situation.  In the end, a combination of skill and action puts the team back on track.

Projects:

Employing the S.N.A.P.S. Heroes system, we have created the Games "Heroes of Telluria" and "Legends of Telluria."  Available for purchase are physical and electronic kits of our "Heroes Boot Camp".  These kits contain 8 introductory Missions to our Heroes of Telluria game.  Lead Game Designer Daniel Rowan, created the game in a way that allows the materials used for our table top board game to be directly transferred over to an electronic video game!  This format is new, exciting and incredibly useful as a therapeutic medium! Dan also created a tactical game titled "S.N.A.P.S. Heroes Squads".  That game exists in the world of S.N.A.P.S. Risks and challenges

This is a tremendous undertaking into a new area. We have created a game that is meant to be therapeutic at its core, down to the very mechanics of gameplay. It is primarily meant to be used as a tool for therapists, although we have adapted gameplay in our standard version to allow non-therapists access to the game. We believe in the incredible power of S.N.A.P.S. Heroes. However our greatest obstacle is getting the word out to as many people as possible. Even if you don't pledge to support the project, we ask if you could please share it with anyone you know who could benefit from this therapeutic tool. We would very much appreciate it! Some of our players have Anxiety, Autism Spectrum Disorder (formerly considered Asperger's Disorder), Depression or physical limitations; anything that can affect people socially.
