What is the SnapRays Guidelight?
The SnapRays Guidelight is a plug-and-play replacement for the standard plug-in night lights and hardwired guide lights found on the market today; it installs within seconds and requires no wires or batteries. Designed to look like and replace the standard outlet cover plate, the SnapRays Guidelight is equipped with light emitting diodes (LEDs) to provide illumination in the dark while keeping both outlets available for use at all times. For convenience, the Guidelight includes a light sensor that automatically turns the LEDs on in the dark and off in the light.
How does it work?
The SnapRays Guidelight is designed to be installed over the standard electrical outlet. As the user installs the Guidelight, the patented "Power Extractors" on the back side of the Guidelight slide into the electrical box and around the outlet receptacle making contact with the screw terminals located on the sides of the outlet. This proprietary technology is what enables the device to extract power from the receptacle without having to hardwire, plug into or occupy an outlet.
Installs in Seconds
Installing the SnapRays Guidelight takes only seconds. First power is turned off to the outlet. The existing cover plate is then removed and the SnapRays Guidelight is inserted over the outlet and fastened in place. Once this is done the power is turned back on to the outlet. The Guidelight will illuminate once the area is dark.
Sleek, low profile design
Designed to look like and replace the standard outlet cover plate. A light sensor on the face of the Guidelight automatically turns the LEDs off during the day and on at night. This allows for the Guidelight to blend in with it's surroundings during the day while providing ambient/accent lighting at night.
Designed for Energy Efficiency
Outlets always available for use
Because of the Guidelight's power extraction technology, both outlets remain open and available for use at all times.
Great for Children
All of the electronics of the SnapRays Guidelight are encapsulated inside the coverplate, making it a much more child friendly and robust alternative than the standard night lights available today.
SnapRays at a glance
What styles and colors of Guidelights are available?SnapRays Guidelights are available in two different styles: duplex (two separate holes) and decor (one rectangular hole). Please note that the decor Guidelights fit over GFCI outlets and decor switches, but will not work because the GFCI outlets and decor switches do not have the required side screw terminals. The Guidelights are only for installation over standard duplex or decor outlets. We are making the Guidelights in three colors: white, light almond, and ivory. So we have a total of six different guidelights which are shown below. When you pledge, you only need to indicate the number of Guidelights you want. We will contact you before shipping to determine which style and color you want.
What type of outlets can be used with the SnapRays Guidelights?
SnapRays Guidelights are available in a range of styles and colors. The Guidelights are compatible with standard duplex and décor outlets that have exposed screw terminals, regardless of the manufacturer or year. SnapRays Guidelights do not work with Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets that are sometimes found in bathrooms. The GFCI outlets do not have the required screw terminals.
Duplex Decor GFCI
What orientation does the SnapRays Guidelight work in?
The SnapRays Guidelight is designed to work in only one orientation. The lights are designed to be installed facing the same direction as the ground prongs on the outlet. For example: If the ground prongs on the outlet are facing down, the Guidelight will need to be installed with the lights facing down. If the ground prongs on the outlet are facing up, then the Guidelight will need to be installed with the lights facing up.
Do the Guidelights turn ON and OFF?
Yes. A photosensor on the Guidelight automatically turns it ON when the area is dark and OFF when the area is light.
Are there more detailed instructions about how to install the Guidelights?
Yes. Each Guidelight ships with instructions for safe installation. Installation only takes seconds and includes turning off power to the outlet, removing your old cover plate, placing the Guidelight over your outlet and re-inserting the screw to hold the Guidelight in place. If you are unsure that you can successfully follow these instructions, please contact a licensed electrician.
Is the SnapRays Guidelight child friendly?
Yes! Ordinary nightlights can be pulled away from the wall, exposing the electrified prongs. SnapRays Guidelights cannot be unplugged and are very resistant to damage.
How much does it cost to operate a SnapRays Guidelight?
The SnapRays Guidelight draws around 5 milliamps of power and costs only pennies each year to operate. Based on current power rates, we estimate that each Guidelight uses around 5 cents of power per year.
How big are the Guidelights?
SnapRays Guidelights are 2.9 inches wide, 4.9 inches tall and less than a quarter of an inch thick. This is about the same size and shape as current cover plates. The SnapRays Guidelights are designed to blend in with the other cover plates in your home.
Are the SnapRays Guidelights UL listed?
Yes, the SnapRays Guidelights are UL and C/US listed.
SnapRays in the News
My name is Jeremy Smith. I became an electrician during the 90's and have installed a lot of guide lights in homes. If you are unaware of what a guide light is, just picture the built in night lights that are installed on walls next to stairs inside homes. Installation of these typical guide lights requires running numerous wires through walls, installing additional electrical boxes, and manually wiring the guide lights. This can be very expensive. Also, conventional plug-in night lights available today are bulky, occupy outlets, break easily and can be dangerous. So I decided to come up with a simple solution, one that would solve these problems and also be easy enough that anyone could install it. After several years of hard work, designing, and engineering, this product is now ready to hit the market! The SnapRays Team hopes you enjoy the beauty and convenience that the SnapRays Guidelights bring to your home.
Here is the SnapPower Timeline. You will notice that we have accomplished some very significant milestones, including setting up our manufacturing and making tooling. We are now focused on making a prototyping run of several thousand Guidelights before starting full production.

Risks and challenges
We've spent a lot of time designing a product that meets the highest standards of performance, durability and convenience. We have also set up our manufacturing facilities and production tooling. All in all, things are looking great! But surprises can happen. We will always be transparent and inform our backers of potential hurdles that might come up.
We have built in extra time for any problems that might come up during the manufacturing process, and we are confident we will ship by the projected dates. Due to the extensive prep work we have done, it is possible that we could begin fulfilling right after funding closes. However, we will always keep you notified if things take longer than we expect.
We have taken the following steps to make sure that we deliver the highest quality product:
- Produced an initial product run of 200 Guidelights to insure quality. In order to enhance the product experience, we will continue to improve the product based on your feedback.
- Extensively tested prototypes for performance, convenience and durability. This includes designing, engineering and manufacturing the entire guide light in accordance with UL safety and performance standards.
We have established relationships with experienced manufacturers to mitigate the risk of delays by material suppliers and to ensure quality control is implemented to the highest level. In addition, we have produced an initial run with our manufacturers and set up all the necessary facilities and tooling.
Again, things are looking great! But if any unforeseen problems do come up, we will make sure to let our backers know as soon as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
