About this project
SnapPower Charger Overview
- Powerful 1-amp USB charger built into an outlet cover plate.
- Charges any USB device (phones, phablets, tablets, hotspots, etc.) and eliminates the need for bulky wall warts.
- Installs in seconds over any standard outlet in your home.
- There’s no wiring to mess with, and no batteries to sort out. Just bring a screwdriver and a good attitude.
- For renters, this solution provides convenient wall charging that can be taken with you when you move. If you move out, just pop the old cover back on.
Make any standard outlet in your home USB compatible...in seconds
Installation is drop-dead simple. For real. Seriously.
Wiring is a buzzkill. The SnapPower Charger installs in literally seconds, and requires no wiring whatsoever. Here’s the play-by-play:
Simplicity makes all the difference
Take back your outlets!
Even when charging your devices, both outlets remain open and available for other uses at all times.
With custom-built components engineered to fit entirely inside the cover plate, it's the sleekest, most low profile charger around.
Its slim design allows furniture to be positioned snug against the wall. The side access to the charging port enables you to plug your USB cables in with no hassle.
No more searching for lost adapters
Unlike plug-in adapters that get shuffled around from room to room (and eventually lost), the SnapPower Charger is securely screwed to the outlet and always there when you need it.
Charges any device from any manufacturer
Blends in with any home decor
How it works (or, the science behind the magic)
What type of outlets can be used with the SnapPower Charger?
The SnapPower Charger comes in a variety of styles and colors. The Chargers are compatible with standard duplex and decor outlets that have exposed screw terminals, regardless of the manufacturer or year. The SnapPower charger is not compatible with Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets that are sometimes found in bathrooms. GFCI outlets do not have the required screw terminals and can be identified by the “test” and “reset” buttons located on the face of the outlet.
If you’re picking up what we’re putting down, help us by sharing SnapPower with your friends and family!
Can you install the SnapPower Charger upside down (with the USB port above the outlet)?
The SnapPower Charger is designed to work in only one orientation. The USB port is designed to be installed on the same side as the ground prongs on the outlet. For example: If the ground prongs on the outlet are facing down, the Charger will need to be installed with the USB port beneath the outlet. If the ground prongs on the outlet are facing up, then the Charger will need to be installed with the USB port above the outlet (pictured below).
Risks and challenges
We've spent a lot of time engineering a product that meets the highest standards of performance, durability and convenience. Our manufacture has been selected and we are gearing up for production. We learned a lot from our first Kickstarter campaign and look forward to delivering once again on time. With that being said, surprises can happen and we will be sure to always be transparent and inform our backers of potential hurdles that may come up.
Supply Chain Risk
We've finalized our production schedule and plans with experienced manufacturers to ensure that the SnapPower Charger is on schedule to deliver according to our forecast. Our team is experienced in the full spectrum of the Supply Chain process. However, unexpected shortages and delays can occur when dealing with numerous components from different suppliers. If anything does come up, we will be sure to notify our backers promptly and work quickly to resolve any issues.
Great question! See the above explanation (the explanation is located before the "risks and challenges" section).
Charging times will vary depending on the actual device being charged, size of battery and manufacturer. However, it should be similar to any brand name 1 amp charger on the market. For example, the charge time is comparable to the 1 amp Apple charger that comes standard with the new iPhones 6 and 6 Plus. To give you an idea, we recently ran some numbers and did some testing. We charged Apple devices with the SnapPower Charger and below are roughly the charge times from 0% to 100%.
iPhone 6: 2 hours
iPhone 6 Plus: 3 hours
iPad Air: 8 hours
iPad Air 2: 7.5 hours
As we prepared this initial product, the 1 amp Charger was the perfect blend of function, form and speed to market. While we believe we will be able to offer a 2.1 amp version of the Charger in the future, it will require more costly components and/or a possible larger cavity on the cover plate, as well as additional time to test new prototypes, line up manufacturing and get UL certification. That redesign, additional tooling, procuring the right components and UL cert process will take some time to figure out. Again, our focus is to get a quality product to our supporters on time. With that said, we know that our supporters will receive an amazing product with the 1 amp Charger and will enjoy the benefits of its sleek design and easy installation. We’ve done a lot of research and testing and have yet to find a USB compatible device that does not charge with our 1 amp SnapPower Charger (although some tablets and other larger devices rated for 2.1 will take longer to charge).
The SnapPower Charger comes with one charging port. The redesign to accommodate two ports, additional tooling, procuring the right components and UL certification process will take some time to figure out. Because of this we we will only be offering the one port option at this time. UL certification is the most difficult obstacle to overcome when trying to introduce a second port. UL has very specific requirements for separating input voltages from USB output voltages. It is difficult to overcome this without a complete redesign and without making the design overly large.
No, the Charger will not come equipped with LEDs. The Charger is a product we anticipate being used by the bedside in many use cases and we feel that if we were to combine this product with our first product, the LEDs would bother some people. When we do deliver a version of the Charger with LEDs we will want to incorporate an on/off switch on the product.
Yes, like all SnapPower products, the SnapPower Charger will ship UL listed and certified for both the United States and Canada.
We engineered the Charger with premium parts to ensure that it lasts for as long as possible. We estimate that the Charger will last for at least 10 years under normal use.
All of them! The Charger charges all devices that use standard USB.
Yes! The SnapPower Charger comes with a 1 year limited warranty.
The Charger is compatible with standard duplex and décor outlets that have exposed screw terminals, regardless of the manufacturer or year. The SnapPower Charger does not work with Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets that are sometimes found in bathrooms. The GFCI outlets do not have the required screw terminals.
The SnapPower Charger is compatible with outlets that have standard side screw terminals and operate at 100-120 volts. Below is a list of countries that have electrical systems that are compatible with the SnapPower Charger. For more information, please see this excellent resource from International Electrotechnical Commission: http://www.iec.ch/worldplugs/map.htm#
Note that some countries use more than one type of electrical system. For example, Bolivia has both a 115 V system and a 230 volt system. The Charger will only work for the 115V system when standard side screw terminal outlets are used.
Outlets in other countries do not have the required screw terminals for the SnapPower Charger to draw power from.
Good question. The shipping rates for USA and Canada are listed below:
$3.00 USD for 1, 2, and 3 packs
$5.00 USD for a 5 pack
$7.00 USD for a 10 pack
Shipping to countries outside of USA or Canada are more.
Yes! At the close of the funding period we will send out a survey where you can specify how many of each style (Duplex or Decor) and color (White, Light Almond, Ivory) you want in your pack.
Yes. Each Charger ships with instructions for safe installation. Installation only takes seconds and includes turning off power to the outlet, removing your old cover plate, placing the Charger over your outlet and re-inserting the screw to hold the Charger in place. If you are unsure that you can successfully follow the included instructions, please contact a licensed electrician.
Of course! We love to innovate here at SnapPower, and we’re working hard to bring more great products to market. We love to hear any and all suggestions you might have, so keep them coming!
When installed with the charging port below the outlet, the USB charging port is located on the right side of the cover plate.
Yes. Similar to other USB charging devices, the SnapPower Charger has built-in surge protection.
