O Watch - A 3D Printable Smartwatch Kit for Kids

O Watch is an Arduino compatible smartwatch kit for kids to get started with hands-on programming and 3D printing. This DIY kit comes with a complete set of components and easy-to-use online instructions to create your own smartwatch.

O Watch learning tools will include a kid-friendly website with easy tutorials, examples and a community to share their creations. Arduino IDE will be the primary programming tool for O Watch.

Case designs will be available on the O Watch website and can be 3D printed at home, ordered via several 3D printing services (e.g. Shapeways, 3DHubs), or printed at local public maker-spaces (e.g. School, Library, TechShop, Fab Lab).

Stretch Goal:

Thanks for helping us get to the funding goal early. To make O Watch even more awesome, we are setting a stretch goal of $20,000. If achieved you will get more color choices for the 3D printed watch cases shipped with each reward.

O Watch Models

The O Watch kit comes in two variants: 

Base Kit: Color OLED Screen with integrated Arduino Zero based main processor board, LiPo battery, 3D printed watch case and para-cord band kit. Four color options available (Orange, Yellow, Pink, Blue).

Sensor Kit: Base kit plus one stackable sensor board with integrated 3 axis compass, a temperature/humidity sensor and a barometric pressure sensor.

Bluetooth Add-on: By popular demand for connectivity option. We're glad to announce the TinyShield Bluetooth LE as add-on for $29.95. You can select this add-on for any of the current reward levels. To get this option, please add $29.95 to the reward level you've chosen. e.g. if you chose the Base Kit, please modify your pledge amount to $114.95 and for Sensor Kit change your pledge to $138.95.

Electronic Components

We have partnered with TinyCircuits to design and manufacture the electronic components for O Watch. The prototype base watch kit shown in the video uses 3 boards - the OLED screen, Arduino processor board and a separate USB programmer board along with the LiPo battery.

To reduce the components and thickness of O Watch, TinyCircuits has designed a new Arduino Zero based module for us with a color OLED screen, micro USB programmer and charger all fully integrated on a single board as shown above. The integrated micro USB port is used for both charging and uploading programs to the O Watch.

The sensor board contains a 3 axis compass, a temperature & humidity sensor and a barometric pressure sensor. These are great for kids to learn to make a digital compass, write programs to measure temp, humidity, pressure and also to calculate altitude.

Since O Watch is based on the Arduino based TinyDuino platform, it gives O Watch users access to open source projects from a thriving developer community that makes great programs including games. The platform is designed to be expandable and TinyCircuits offers several add-on stackable boards to create projects well beyond the smartwatch once your child is ready for the next step.

3D Printing

O Watch cases can be 3D printed at home or via one of the several 3D printing services or maker-spaces convenient to your location. We are actively working on creating a 3D printing partner ecosystem for kids to easily customize and 3D print O Watch cases in a variety of colors and materials.

We’ve partnered with 3D Hubs, a global network of 3D printers to make it easy for you to have access to local 3D printing services. As an O Watch partner, 3D Hubs is offering a $10 credit with no minimum spend to get O Watch projects kickstarted. We are working with 3D Hubs to integrate their Teleport API to theowatch.com so O Watch users can order prints directly from the O Watch website.

About Us

My name is Omkar. I'm 8 years old and got interested in electronics and programming 3 years back when I attended my 2nd Maker Faire. I was inspired by Quin Etnyre then the 12 year old CEO of Qtechknow. Since then I wanted to make my own product and company. Please visit Iot4kids.com to see my projects.

Risks and challenges

Electronics: Timely supply of electronics components/hardware is key to the success of this project. Our partner, TinyCircuits has delivered two Kickstarter campaigns successfully and is ready with the new prototype processor and sensor boards that will be used in the O Watch. Based on their track record and after testing the prototypes, we are confident of meeting the timelines comfortably.

3D Design: We are currently working on refining the 3D designs for O Watch cases to make it easier for kids to customize and 3D print. If the design process takes longer, there could be delays in making the 3D printed cases. However, we feel confident of being able to meet the delivery timelines.
