I'm raising money to support the recording and
production of my next album entitled 'kodama'. It's a new project that
will unite my skills as a jazz composer and saxophonist with ambient
recordings and big hip-hop beats. My previous recordings have been
experimental forays into different genres. This will by my first album
with a more stylized, cohesive sound and focus.
Money received will go toward buying a classic MPC drum machine that's been used on some of the world's most acclaimed hip-hop albums, a new little guitar amp for my Les Paul and the recording of piano and saxophone parts for the album. The rest of the money will go toward mastering the album, a small vinyl press run and paying for the album art and cds to be printed as well as distributed online.
The inspirational focus for the album is nature and our connectivity to it. Living in Japan, I want to take musical ideas from the environment that I wouldn't find anywhere else. These will range from mimicking patterns in birdsong to actual ambient recordings from some of Japan's serene natural areas.
I'm really hopeful that this album will be a melodic, chilled work that solidifies my place as a unique jazz composer with hip-hop influences. I will also be making special arrangements so that I can perform the album live. :)
The main influences for the album are DJ Shadow, Nujabes, Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane.
Bear in mind that many of my previous efforts have been mixed by myself alone and for many tracks I couldn't afford any mastering or post-production work. I'm looking at 5 full tracks for the album and 2 or 3 short ambient interludes. I'm aiming for around 30 minutes of music. It's important that the tracks balance and support each other as well as convey the message of the project so I will be working to make sure the pieces are in different keys and ordered in a way that takes the listener on a coherent yet transforming voyage.
I'm aware that I'm not a well known musician, I have maybe 100 fans max! They are all wonderful and supportive. Music's been my love for over a decade and I'm confident that the practice and writing I've put in over the years will really make this album a unique, successful modern work.
*£1000 is the bare minimum that I can complete this project with. If we can raise any more, it'd be amazing!!!!
What the money will be used for
1. An MPC drum machine - for sampling records £400
2. A small recording amp for my guitar £100
3. Recording sessions in a Tokyo studio. I'm a competent musician, so I hope to be able to lay down everything within 2 or 3 days. £200
4. Mastering and cd replication, small vinyl run £300
Expected timeframe: I've already made some field recordings so I hope to write the material over Autumn/Winter and release the cd/vinyl in March 2014
Thank you for your support. I'm really looking forward to making this album.
Risks and challenges
There will be challenges along the way. There's always the possibility that writing the music may take a little longer than anticipated. When writing jazz, it's important to stay cool and not force-write a piece because you can always tell when it's been rushed. It's also possible that I hit problems in the studio. If the engineer doesn't know enough about microphones or saxophone dynamics I may need to re-record parts. There's always the potential that I could fall ill during the recording process, but at the moment my fitness and health are good. I've tried my best to budget accurately for this project, but this is the first project I've undertaken on quite such a large scale. In my experience, mastering is also a tricky business. I've chosen an engineer who's very transparent and I've worked with before. This should help in navigating toward a desirable post-production sound and quality. I won't give up on this project and I hope to work through any setbacks as earnestly as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
