Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) is excited to welcome back artist collective Squidsoup to install Murmuration, a brand new site-specific audiovisual artwork onto the exterior the Museum November 2019 – May 2020. After an overwhelmingly positive response to Squidsoup's Ocean of Light: Submergence from the community in 2017, we are thrilled to be working on this historic new project with them. We are asking for your help to raise funds to enable us to bring this artwork to SMoCA. Any additional funds raised beyond our initial goal will go toward the costs of acquiring part of the artwork so audiences can enjoy it for years to come. If we raise $15,000 or more we can make it happen!
A nonprofit contemporary art museum that focuses on art, architecture, and design working with artists on a local, national, and international scale. We support emerging and established artists and one of the most exciting and significant parts of our mission is to work with artists to create new artworks. It is important to us to serve our diverse community and make art accessible to all.
A site-specific artwork on the outside of SMoCA. It will use networked data systems to connect over 800 orbs containing light and audio sources, creating a responsive data swarm. During the daytime, Murmuration offers a harmonious auditory experience, but when the sun goes down, a dynamic audiovisual experience swirls around the Museum like its namesake — a term for a flock of starlings whirling in unison through the sky. This project will always be free and open to the public.
Our biggest supporters! Without you, we could not do what we do. This project is for you. With your help, for the first time in SMoCA’s history, we will be able to install a site-specific, immersive artwork on the outside of our beautiful museum. By participating in this campaign, you become part of this artwork and the history of SMoCA. The names of those who contribute to the project will be listed outside the Museum as supporters of the project.

Their work combines physical and dynamic digital spaces with novel and intuitive forms of interaction to produce immersive, responsive, and beguiling experiences.
Risks and challenges
If we are unable to hit our target funding, then there may need to be compromises, but we will still move forward with the artists on the installation. This is an important project for both SMoCA and Squidsoup, so no matter what, we will work together and present a stellar artwork. We truly believe in the ability of our community to come together and support this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
