Hi! I'm Andy Smith and I've been a professional comic book artist for 25 plus years, whew, that is a long time! Some of my clients include Marvel, DC, Image, Valiant, Cross Gen, and now I'm with Ominous Press drawing Demi-God and I'm the company's art director. Check out some of my work at www.andysmithart.com. Go ahead take a peek, I'll be here when you're done perusing my work.
I've written three previous books on comic book art as well, "Drawing Dynamic Comics", "Drawing American Manga Superheroes", and "The How to Draw Superheroes Sketchbook" which I did in association with Render Demo.
Now I bring to you my first Kickstarter for the aspiring character designer in you!
"Dynamic Hero Templates"
When I was a kid learning to draw, I had a lot of character design ideas rolling around in my head but I wasn’t at the talent level I envisioned in my head to put them down on paper in a way I was happy with. That’s the reason I created "Dynamic Hero Templates" so whether you are an aspiring artist or someone that likes to create characters but doesn’t want too deal with the hassle of trying too draw an accurate figure now you can just open this book and start creating your characters over my blue line figure templates!
This book is for all ages and skill levels. If your young child shows an interest in art and making up characters this book is perfect for them. If you want to design characters that have a finished polished feel this book is for you.
Instead of a crude drawing of a figure that doesn’t show your design in the best light now you can design over professional figure and head templates that will showcase your design at a professional level!
The book measures 11" x 8.5" in landscape format so you have ample room to draw your designs and is 48 pages in length. The book includes 8 different types of male figure physiques so you have a variety of body types to use when designing your characters. The body type of a character is an important part in the overall character design so with these body type varieties you’ll be able to create an abundant number of characters each unique in its design and physicality.
· The standard iconic hero physique, featuring two different bodies with subtle differences between them.
· A dwarf physique.
· A hulking over-sized physique.
· A child physique.
· A mid-teenager physique.
· A heavy-set larger physique.
· A lean, thinner physique.
Also included in the book are 6 different head types, front and ¾ view, so you can design the head at a larger scale then the one on the figure template to accentuate the details of the head and face.
· The standard male head.
· The hulking brutish head.
· The child male head.
· The mid-teenager head.
· The heavy-set head.
· The lean, thinner head.
Charlie McElvy example!
I asked my buddy Charlie to pick a template and work up a design of his as an example to show what someone that isn't a professional artist can do. Charlie is known for "The Official Handbook of the WatchGuard Universe", "The WatchGuard Source-book" , and The Chemical Plant (a HeroClix™ map)
Charlie- "Having created hundreds of characters on my own, and published dozens of them in various projects like "The WatchGuard Source-book", this project really spoke to me. I've used tools like Hero Machine, and others to help get me started, but what I've always needed was a set of templates that fit my goals. THANK YOU, ANDY!! This is exactly what I've always needed: base figures of various types, professional turnarounds, and a flexible set of templates from which to work. Perfect."
As you can see Charlie chose the Brutish figure template and went to town! Once finished he scanned his design and added some basic color. Now that's a tough looking character I'd like to draw!

What the funds are for?
I know when I back a project I'd like to know where the money is going, seems reasonable. The funds for this project are for the printing of the book, which is the bulk of the cost of production, and the time I put into putting the book together. The book is complete and ready to go to the printer and that is where you come in.
