Smileys Project: Climbing North America's 50 Classic Climbs
Documenting the epic journey of a husband wife team attempting to climb the historic, remote, & iconic mountains across North America.
My wife, Janelle, and I are continuing our climbing documentary project, Committed. The project is beginning its fourth year to climb the Fifty Classic Climbs of North America. No one has climbed all 50 routes that ascend these beautiful mountains and rock faces from New Mexico to Alaska. In three years, we have climbed 40 of the 50 classics.
This summer we are going to attempt to climb and film seven more iconic classic climbs. Four of which are major Alaska multi-week expeditions, & three are technical rock climbs. This will be a huge undertaking and we need your help!
To make things even more challenging, we are shooting professional grade film and photographs in order to share with you, both success and failures, of this climbing adventure. We personally shoot, edit, and distribute 5-13 min films from each expedition free of charge via vimeo.com
2010-11: Climbed 35 of the "easy" classic climbs funded by all our personal savings & donations from friends and family.
2012- Attempted 9 very difficult Classics, were successful on 5. Funded by a little sponsorship money & a lot of donations from our previous kickstarter campaign. Visit this webpage to see the expense report.
May-Oct 2013: Attempt seven more big Classics climbs in Alaska, Canada, New Mexico and Colorado, & make purely awesome videos with the content collected.
Currently, there are 34 Committed episodes that you can watch right now: www.smileysproject.com (below is one of our films).
Whats New and Different for 2013?
-Routes are getting more difficult, remote, and expensive.
-Looking for a elite climbing videographer (who will work for very little, but take home some incredible experiences) who will join, to both improve our margin of safety, and get great shots of the climbing action.
-Bring on professional video editor(s) to improve the final film quality, and narrative arc. With creative collaboration the art produced will drastically improve.
How Kickstarter Works
By donating to the Smiley's Project you "the backer" will receive a thank you gift "reward" directly from us. Every donation gets us closer to being able to pursue our dream. Please contribute what you can, then share the link, email a friend, and pass it on.
If we happen to exceed our goal, those funds will go towards increasing the quality of the end product, along with submitting the films to several more film festivals, and increase the quality of the songs licensed for the videos. If we do not meet our goal then your donation will be returned to you, and the Smiley's Project will come to a screeching halt.
2013 Expeditions to Film
Your Donation Will Be Used To Help Cover:
- Permits ($2,100)
- Land Transportation 11,000+ miles ($2400)
- Sea Transportation [Ferry] ($2908)
- Air Transportation to Glaciers ($6000)
- Expedition Supplies ($3500)

- Reward Delivery ($2500)
- Filming Equipment/Rentals ($3500)

The bottom three items are "hopeful expenses" only if the funding comes in. We are counting on our corporate sponsors to provide necessary equipment, and contribute a combined $13K that is required to reach our bare bones budget of $30K to make these films happen.

Risks and challenges
Anytime one enters the mountains they are at the mercy of many things. Weather, route conditions, snow conditions, fatigue, interpersonal relationships with your climbing partner/spouse, extreme weather, and fear are but a few. Filming in the mountains, while climbing a big route...well, that adds a level of complexity that few want to deal with. That is what helps make remote alpine climbing videos so unique.
Take all these challenges, and then stack on top the complexities of producing multiple films and you start to see that we need all the help you can provide.
Janelle and I have trained hard to be able to take on these challenges both mentally and physically. The team surrounding our efforts is priceless. Without these challenges mountain climbing would be boring. We hope to capture the struggle that is inherant in any mountain adventure. These videos have always been, and will continue to be raw, not staged, actual adventure in the mountains while they unfold in real time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
