What is Kräftig?
Kräftig is a German word and musical term meaning powerful, vigorous, or strong. Kräftig Audio is a new kind of digital audio workstation—or DAW—which combines the power and modularity of professional audio equipment with the immersion and creativity of a 3D game. With Kräftig, you can create a variety of devices—such as synthesizers, filters, and scopes—and connect them together with virtual wires.
Bridging the gap between physical and virtual
Kräftig will support whatever MIDI or audio devices you already own, and allow you to make completely new sounds using them. You can plug in any electronic instrument, like microphones, electric guitars, or MIDI keyboards, and groove in Kräftig! Don't own any hardware? No problem! Kräftig provides sequencers and virtual keyboards, allowing you to write and play entire songs with nothing but a laptop.

Visualize audio on a whole new level
Kräftig comes with several devices for monitoring and testing audio. See the waveform of audio with the oscilloscope, or its frequency spectrum with the spectrogram. Analyze the harmonic qualities of sounds using the chromatic star—a brand new kind of audio visualization which lets you see the pitch and timber of notes in real time!
What comes with Kräftig?
Kräftig has a huge variety of devices—the equivalent of thousands of dollars worth of physical equipment:
- High quality analog synthesizer (anti-aliased)
- MIDI sequencer/recorder
- Biquad filter (12dB/octave rolloff)
- Delay and reverb effects
- Vocoder (4-64 bands)
- Pitch shifter
- Tons of basic utilities: Panning, crossfading, mixing and splitting
- MIDI and audio input/output
- Audio visualization: Oscilloscope, spectrogram, and the chromatic star
A ton of other devices and features are planned, including:
- Prefabs (Combine devices into a single panel, and export/import them)
- Advanced polyphony
- Visual metronome
- Envelope follower
- Sample editor/recorder
Kräftig's audio engine is professional quality, using 32-bit floating point audio samples, the same quality as high-end audio equipment and hardware.

What comes next?
December 2017: Alpha release
The first alpha version will contain every device and feature shown so far.
June 2018: Beta release
By the beta release, Kräftig will be fully functional. All planned devices will be implemented, but the prefab library won't be complete, and there will still be bugs to fix.
September 2018: Final testing begins
Kräftig will be polished, have dozens of ready-to-use prefabs, and be nearly ready for release. At this point, it just needs to be thoroughly tested, and finishing touches will be added.
October 2018: Final release
The finished version of Kräftig will be released, and the Kräftig package will ship to backers.
Risks and challenges
Any project as ambitious as Kräftig will certainly have risks. Getting Kräftig running smoothly on all platforms, including Linux, Mac, and Windows, may take lengthy testing. Also, the technical requirements of the stretch goals may result in delays in the release schedule—virtual reality and VST may introduce bugs or interface problems that will require time to solve.
Otherwise, the core engine of Kräftig is finished, and all that's left is to improve usability, implement a greater variety of devices, create an extensive prefab library, and ship the program!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
