We didn't make it :-(
We are sorry to inform you that we didn't make it on Kickstarter... this time. But we will try again! We're not giving up! We've learned a lot from this crowdfunding campaign and are already taking steps towards possible investors. We are also looking for ways to lower our production costs. A 100.000 Euros might have been a little bit too much to ask.
To all who supported us: Thank you so much!

Sam from Smash It!
We love trivia too.
We love trivia and we believe trivia needs an upgrade.
Are you one of those people who love being together with friends, taking out a board game of Trivial Pursuit and just play for hours instead of watching tv? You probably have those moments where you don’t care about these 6 parts you have to collect, but just want to answer as much questions as possible read by one of your friends. We certainly do!
When another player doesn’t know the answer to the question, we all hate it that we can’t answer in his place. If you are one of those trivia fanatics like we are, you probably will have played every single question in your trivia game. Throwing away a trivia game to a buy a new one, just doesn’t feel right. What if we could all answer the question every time one is asked and what if we would never run out of new questions?
Today, we all have these digital devices like tablets and smartphones. We believe that we can use this new technology and combine it with the old fun trivia games we all came to know and love.
So we created Smash It!
Smash It is a family game that takes trivia to the next level. If you like playing trivia, you are going to love Smash It!
Smash It is an out-of-the-box trivia quiz with up-to-date questions.
Out of the box?
- Smash It is unlike any other trivia quiz.
- Smash It works as soon as you take it out of the box.
- Smash It contains trivia questions that use video clips, photos and music.
- Smash It gives you free access to an entire community with loads of extra questions.
What’s In the box?
- The Smash It app (runs on any tablet)
- Trivia questions (included in the Smash It app).
- Awesome Smash It buzzers that connect to your tablet!
Smash It brings you and your friends together around your tablet. With trivia questions that are always up-to-date, you’ll never be bored again.
How is it played?
Basically there are 2 modes: friend mode and team mode.
In friend mode, you play Smash It together with a bunch of friends around your tablet. Just take out the buzzers, put the tablet in the center of the table, fire up the app, pick some topics you like and start playing. Reading out the questions is turn based, but unlike other trivia games, everyone can buzz in to get a shot at answering the question. One player reads the questions off a smartphone while the associated video clip, picture or music is played on the tablet. Try to be the first to hit your buzzer. Give the answer to the question. If you get it right, you score a point. Sorry, if you get it wrong, you’re out for this question but the other players can still buzz in. You’ll feel like you’re on real TV show where the prize is to be the ultimate smart-ass amongst your friends!
The number of trivia questions are endless, as you get access to our online Smash It community where loads of questions are freely available.
In team mode, you can be the ultimate quizmaster for a crowd of people, like colleagues, friends or family. Using the Smash It quiz editor available on the online Smash It community, you get to make your own questions. Make up your own rounds about Disney, TV series, movies, ... anything! Hell, make up rounds specifically aimed at your crowd! We had a lot fun guessing embarrassing childhood pictures of our family :-)
Setting up your trivia quiz with a projection screen or tv is also very easy. Just connect your tablet to a projector or tv and you’re good to go. You can read out the questions using your phone.
Team mode lets you socialize your crowd. When you play with large groups, it is possible that not everyone knows one another. Smash It has a solution for this. We call it “shuffling”. At the end of every round, players are “shuffled”. This means that all players form new teams. The score made by a team is allocated to each individual player. When your team scores 5 points, you take those 5 points with you and start the second round with 5 points towards the new team. After the second round, the same happens again. Smash It makes sure you always form a team with new people. It’s a great way to get to know each other.
Our story goes back 3 years, where just two of us, Sam & Sofie, organised our first trivia night with friends and family. We wanted something that was different from your everyday Powerpoint trivia quiz. So I, Sam, came up with a very basic version of what Smash It! is today: an app for the quizmaster, an app for the players connecting to a projector and... 4 off-the-shelf modified buzzers. We included questions from various TV shows like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, but also from local ones from our home country. Like “De Slimste Mens”. It was an awesome night. Our friends loved it and we were invited to host next year’s trivia night.
Every year, we updated our software and played our trivia quiz at that family weekend. We were very excited when others started to use our trivia apps to host their own trivia nights too.
In 2014, I met Ruben, a design engineer and colleague of my wife. He saw the potential in our hardware and software and started working on a unique design for own buttons! Shortly after, Glenn joined the team and started working on the electronics. We even received an early funding from iMinds (now imec) to start prototyping. Smash It was born!
For 2 years, we used our spare time to work on the software and hardware of our product. Now, in 2016, we have a our final product: the Smash It app with 4 buzzers and a database full of questions we’ve gathered over the years.
We’re finally ready for production. We have lined up our manufacturers to create our own Smash It box with our own hardware. Our software has passed it’s prototyping phase and we’re currently working on our Smash It community.
This project has been a tremendous adventure for our team. We had an amazing time working on and testing our product and we want you to have the same fun we had for the past 3 years.
To produce our minimum batch of 1.250 Smash It boxes, we need about a 100.000 Euros. That’s a lot of money and so we come to you, our future trivia community, to support us here on Kickstarter and to make Smash It a reality.
Sam, Sofie, Ruben and Glenn.
Breakdown of our production costs.
Making a quality product costs a lot of money. 84% of our hardware is purchased or produced right here in Belgium. Producing this in our home country gives us a lot of control. But that doesn’t come cheap. The only way to lower the production cost per unit, is by buying enough components at once. For this, we need to produce about 5.000 Smash It buzzers. (or 1250 Smash It boxes). That's a lot! To be as transparent as possible, we're showing you our cost breakdown. This also includes the country of purchase:
To lower our costs as much as possible, we've only included the things we cannot do ourselves. Building firmware, writing our software, designing user interfaces, ... It's all done by our amazing team and with the use of our initial funding we got from iMinds.
All of our rewards include FREE SHIPPING to the US and to most EU countries. If not, shipping costs are not that high.
If you want multiple rewards, just add the right amount of money and we’ll send you a survey afterwards to figure out what you need.

Risks and challenges
Delays, that's something we don't like too. Therefore we have lined up a lot of Belgian manufacturers and suppliers.
For the injection moulding, which will happen in China, we’re working with a very reliable Belgian company too. They speak our language and they speak Chinese. We still have some budget left from our initial funding and will be using that to start production of the plastics before the end of this campaign. That way, we will have the physical buttons in the course of December 2016.
Certification (CE/FCC/Bluetooth) is another very expensive track we need to overcome. We sat down with different EMC testing labs and have a very good idea of what needs to be done to get our product certified.
We hope we have convinced you enough to place your trust in us and that you will support us on this journey. Making hardware is still hard, but we can do it! After all, we’re all engineers. Well most of us are :-)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
