Adding intelligence to everyday things in your world, so that your life can be more awesome.
Adding intelligence to everyday things in your world, so that your life can be more awesome.
5,694 backers pledged $1,209,423 to help bring this project to life.

That was fun! So, what's next?

What an incredibly exciting 30 days! We laughed, we cried (tears of joy!), and we can’t say enough how much we appreciate every one of our backers. We’re amazed at the community that has sprouted around SmartThings, and we’re excited to see many of the amazing ideas that you’ve shared with us come to life.

Here’s a look at what you’ve achieved, by the numbers...

  • In 30 days, 5694 of you pledged $1,209,423.
  • You’ve made SmartThings the #2 technology project to close on Kickstarter.
  • We were the 14th project to pass $1 million in pledges!
  • Our team has fielded 800 inbound Kickstarter messages from you.
  • You’ve posted more than 3,500 comments on updates and the project itself.
  • We’ll be delivering roughly 25,000 Things to you, our SmartThings backers.
  • More than 13,500 people ‘Like’ SmartThings on Facebook and more than 500 people follow SmartThings on Twitter.

So, what’s next? Here are a few answers to questions we’ve seen recently.

Grab A Partner, Let’s do the Survey Two-Step!

Many of you have asked when you’ll get to choose the Things that will be included in your SmartThings Pack, or how we will be collecting shipping details. The answer: keep an eye out for surveys! We’ve planned a two-step approach:

  • By Monday, October 8th we will send a survey link that will collect your contact information and shipping details. That’s it! Super simple.
  • Close to the time of shipping we will send a second, personalized survey link that will allow you to choose the specific Things that will be included in your SmartThings Pack, and add more Things, so that you will have all the details that you need to decide on what you want.

Can I add more Things to my pledge?

We’re focused primarily on delivering the roughly 25,000 Things that we’ll be shipping to project backers based on existing pledges. However, we will do our best to allow you more than one opportunity to add more Things to your SmartThings Pack. Quite possibly as part of the survey that you will receive just prior to shipping.

How will you know if I am getting the extra Thing for adding my comment to Update 6 within the 48 hour window?

We have extracted all of the comments from Update 6 posted within the 48 hour window that was provided to claim a bonus Thing. We know who you are and will be adding this to your profile.

Help! Something’s up with my pledge payment or reward tier.

Please reach out to us with a private Kickstarter message, and we’ll do what we can to help sort things out.

My friends and family are green with envy, can they still get in on SmartThings?

The funding for this SmartThings Kickstarter campaign is closed. And right now, we’re full steam ahead and focused on the fulfillment of the pledges we have already received. We do have plans for more Kickstarter (and possibly pre-order) goodness in the coming months, however, so please have your friends and family drop their email at to join the first-to-know list.

Sharing the journey.

We’re here, we’re listening, and we’ll be sure to answer your questions. We’re also putting every possible ounce of focus into delivering, so it might take us a little bit longer to get back to you than it did when funding was open. Please know we will always be giving our best! You should expect that we’ll settle into a less frequent update cycle. We don’t want to overload your inbox, after all! Also, while Kickstarter comment threads are alright, we hope to move conversation quickly into a more efficient community environment, so please stay tuned. In the meantime, you can also reach us on Facebook and Twitter

Last, here’s a tiny peek at just a few of the many things we’re up to this week.

Thanks again, backers!

+1 to not using UPS. My experience is that they give cheaper rates to US customers shipping internationally, and collect the difference (and some) with BS fees to your customer. USPS PLEASE!

    2. SmartThings Creator on October 8, 2012

@Helder / Martin / Rene - Thanks for the feedback. We're definitely listening to the advice.

    3. Rene Tuijtel on October 2, 2012

Fully Agree with Helder! UPS is ripping foreign customers.

Agree with Helder...good ol' US Postal Service please!! they are by far the cheapest (to receive goods on our end!)...

Hi Alex, just a thought since one of these days you will start to ship, regarding to INTERNATIONAL shipment please consider to send it via normal courier and not UPS, since from my experience on other kickstarter projects i backed if you send it through UPS we will get charged big fees, not just custom taxes and so on.., and it seems at end of the day we pay twice the price of my pledge as in normal circumstances we should pay around 23% of taxes.... i think this way you will please lots of other INTERNATIONAL members like me heheh

@Muescha - Interesting on the button concept. We will definitely be offering a very simple 'SmartSwitch' that will service this need, but we like the idea. Sharing with the team.

@Bryan - Yep...some other / more refined motion ideas too given the accelerometer in SmartTags.

      @Caleb - There are some trade-offs here we're evaluating. E.g. - a SmartTag in a backpack...shaking will be a problem.

    7. Caleb Wong on September 27, 2012

I am guessing this is how they r going to pair devices. "shake"

    8. Bryan on September 26, 2012

I guess we could always rely on something like a "shake" even on the smart tag to act as a button press since that button was not for the outside.

    9. Christopher Swenson on September 26, 2012

A button would be nice. I'm hoping I can replicate a button with the SDK and my pebble watch/android phone... If not, time to break out the soldering iron and build something.

@SmartThings why not put a small button on every thing outside? Then each thing has more features and can act like a button trigger. To pair the device you need it not sp often, so going into pairing modus can be done if you remove the battery and put it back.

    11. SmartThings Creator on September 26, 2012

@ Brian / @SuM - Yes, as we close in on delivery, based on availability we will offer options to add additional Things to your delivery.

@Bryan - Yep. We've included a button inside each, but it's only accessible when replacing the battery. We have a more creative way of pairing devices, so we're including it as a backup for an optional hard reset. We hope not to use it.

    12. Bryan on September 25, 2012

In those prototype boards, I see something that looks suspiciously like a push button. Do I see that there?

Would it be possible to add "Developer/Maker Kit" Capability (Shields for Arduino. Software Development Kit (SDK) and Cloud Platform API - to develop SmartThings-friendly software and integrate your devicewith SmartThings) to a $323, 2 fer pledge?

    14. pclabtech on September 25, 2012

I am bummed for not getting the developer's pack, hope that the "kits" will be available after the launch so I can see how easy it is to make my own "things"

    15. Kevin Boyles Jr. on September 25, 2012

I cant wait till you make these widely available. I plan on building my own smart home and also building smarthomes for my customers. This is just what ive been looking for. The current stuff available is too expensive and doesnt do what I would like to do.

    16. SmartThings Creator on September 25, 2012

      @Pat - Thank you!

@ Cristian - Absolutely! We'll orchestrate things carefully to avoid just that sort of thing.

    17. Cristian on September 25, 2012

Make sure not to send the second survey too close to the time of shipping or you might have problems knowing exactly what stock of SmartThing/Module/Shield you actually need.

Congrats on a great start and good luck during the production phase! Can not wait to get my hands on the finished product!

    19. Eric Schuld on September 25, 2012

@Glenn - that would be in the second survey - Above: "Close to the time of shipping we will send a second, personalized survey link that will allow you to choose the specific Things that will be included in your SmartThings Pack, and add more Things, so that you will have all the details that you need to decide on what you want."

A previous update said to add money to manage our pledge for more things. Ok, how / when will we tell you want that money is for? Is that going to be in the survey?

@SmartThings: On "Close to the time of shipping ... allow you to choose the specific Things...". I assume that's after or near the end of the production, so what happens when there aren't enough a Thing or a color I want? Do I need to wait till the next cycle? If so, how long will the wait be?

    22. Sean O'Connell on September 25, 2012

Should be a fun ride to see how it all goes.
