Stretch goals, a few final reminders,
and a push to the finish line

  • EVERYONE: we achieved the $1M stretch goal, so you all get an extra SmartTag with every SmartThings Pack that ships. Spread the word and extend the benefit to others.
  • ENTHUSIASTS: you’ve been so supportive of us from the beginning. You will all be receiving an additional SmartTag along with the other backers as part of our achievement of the $1M goal. In addition to this, if we fill up the Enthusiast tier by the end of our campaign, we will give every Enthusiast 2 additional Things as part of their reward. You heard it right. That means 13+ Things of any type, a limited edition t-shirt, access to our developer and Maker tools, ability to vote and help shape our product roadmap, and lots of extra love.
  • DOUBLE PACKS: We weren't sure how to handle this before but we’ve decided that all double packs get 2 Extra SmartTags as part of hitting the $1M stretch goal.
  • DEVELOPERS AND MAKERS: Great job you have blown past the 300, 400, and 500 goals! You each get a limited edition t-shirt and 2 Extra Things in your packs. You are the sharp tip of the spear that will lead the SmartThings revolution. Sign up for our forthcoming community launch at to keep rolling.

got mine 2 days ago. inner box was open, but i suspect is was just to add all the extra sensors i ordered. moisture & the 4 motion sensors linked as simply as shown in the videos. just pulled the tag out & it was found by the router.

however both open/close sensors won't connect. i tried using the reset switch inside the batterycase (small led indicator was on) with no luck. changed out the AAAA batteries on one sensor with no luck. going to get new batteries today since AAAA are harder to find that i thought. other than that, it works amazingly well. simple to use & i'm eager to explore more sensors.

anyone else having problems with the open/closed switches?

I've been telling lots of people about SmartThings. Several have asked if it is to late to get in on the Kickstarter deal or make an order prior to official launch.
p.S. I'm really looking forward to receiving my SmartThings

    3. Jim Emanuele on September 27, 2012

Help! I upped my pledge in time to add a smart thing, but I did not realize I had to comment to get the smart thing as it says above. Please check my pledge update! I would really like to make sure I get my extra thing!

    4. SmartThings Creator on September 25, 2012

@Sami - The timed stretch goal was missed. However, to thank everyone that pushed so hard to try to hit it, we published Update #6 ( which allowed a 48-hour window to comment and claim a bonus Thing. If you participated in that window, you will receive a bonus Thing. More details in that update.

    5. Sami Hamouri on September 23, 2012

the second achievement " one more thing " , I remember you guys mentioning that you will be adding one more thing to the 2500 backers because we were something like 40 backers short only, have you changed your minds ?

    6. Brendan on September 22, 2012

I am an Early Adopter....can I still additional Things to my pledge?

Would it be possible to make my dumb Garage Door opener smart?
I've seen commercials for one company that has a garage door opener that you can control via your smartphone, but I'd rather not spend the money to replace a perfectly good garage door opener, just to for this. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way using SmartThings to make my stupid opener a smart one.
Obviously and properly rigged open/closed sensor would allow me to see if it's open or not, but closing or opening it remotely is another story. Ideally I'd want a "smart switch" that would sit along side my button in the garage that I can push to open/close the garage. And when the Hub sends a command it just momentarily completes the circuits, thus opening or closing the garage door. But I don't think there is a SmartThing that does that.

Dang it... posted in the wrong update...

As of right now, I think believe that four SmartThings have been discussed as being available when the packs are ready to ship: SmartOutlets, SmartTags, Motion Sensors, and Open/Closed Sensors. Is this accurate?
I know people have suggested a lot of other things and you've hinted or indicated that these are in the pile line, but mostly likely don't be ready for initial launch, right?

Problem wanted to pledge of 174 for an extra a base and 3 . Could not up date . Have added it to enthusiast pledge . Sort out later. Best of luck from the Irish.

    12. Aaron Kaluszka on September 22, 2012

I'm still not clear on the extra rewards for Developers and Makers. Do we get an extra SmartTag (for everyone) PLUS two extra SmartThings of our choice? Can those two extra SmartThings be SmartOutlets or do we have to add extra funds?

    13. Andrew Nicholls
      on September 22, 2012

Is Nate correct that the base 3 things is only one outlet, and the rest things from the $25 list? I can't choose 3 outlets? Related question: Is/are the bonus(es) able to be (an) outlet(s), or only thing(s)?

This is an awesome update to read.

    15. LuCas on September 22, 2012

@SmartThings... We it be possible to have SmartTags have shared presence between multiple hubs? Basically a limited amount of associations for each thing on another hub. This way a person/animal can have one SmartTag and not one for each hub it interacts with. The hubs are but extensions of the SmartThings cloud :) This does not make sense for fixed things but the ones that move around it does. Thanks!

    16. SmartThings Creator on September 22, 2012

@John - Lol. That Thing already exists. The credit card statement. Thanks for your support and looking forward to doing some cool projects together!

Thx. Tis done. Do you have a Smart Thing to warn me when I'm eating myself out of house and home?

    19. SmartThings Creator on September 21, 2012

@John - at Developer and Maker level, you can simply add $35 for every outlet you want added, and $25 for any other type of Thing you want added. No limit.

Would love to help out a little more but it's a bit difficult to figure out what is, selfishly, in it for me. At the developer and maker level, all I'd like is a few more 'things' to deploy. What's the best deal for me, and you?

    21. SmartThings Creator on September 21, 2012

@Mark and @Warren - go ahead and add $174 to your Enthusiast pledge and we'll send you a second hub and pack.

    22. George Chiesa on September 21, 2012

I wonder if the complexity of the reward system was designed on purpose to generate chat, study, discussions and create a sense of true engagement in the community. If so, genious at work, compliments!

    23. Mark Warren on September 21, 2012

@Simon Yes, but... Increasing an Enthusiast level pledge might not work quite as expected (the creators have limited both the number of Early Adopter and Enthusiast backers but Kickstarter's system won't decrement the Early Adopter count when it sees an Enthusiast+$174 pledge). While it might not be a big deal, it would be more convenient to manage both pledges from one account.

    24. Steamerni on September 21, 2012

@mark and @matt pledging an additional 174 might get you a second hub

    34. Missing avatar

      Nate on September 21, 2012

@Tony - With the 3 Things, 1 outlet is included and you can change the other 2 Things to outlets for an additional $10 per Thing. Everything is a SmartThing, as they all talk to the Hub, but everyone is calling them Things just to make it short and sweet. The SmartTag works as a Presence/Temperature/Accelerometer like a small token, while the Motion Sensor actually detects motion of objects in the vicinity that it is directed towards, the same way a door opener at a store detects a person moving in front of it to open the doors.

    35. Missing avatar

      Tony on September 21, 2012

I admit, I haven't been following the comments in the updates as closely as I should but I'm a little confused about what constitutes a "thing" as opposed to a SmartTag and a SmartThing. Is a smart outlet a "thing?" For backers that get to choose 3 "things", does that mean they could choose 3 outlets? Or 2 outlets and 1 tag? And how does a Presence sensor, now known as a SmartTag, differ from a SmartThings Motion Sensor? Are they the same?

      JLS on September 21, 2012

Thanks for the info, but that's pretty ridiculous. KS should allow for more than one of each, not just one total. The objective, as understand it is to find the project... not to limit the number of pledges from any individual.

    38. TheMdrnSamurai on September 21, 2012

@jls - you have to make another kickstarter account. Just use another gmail or whatever, you can still fund from your single amazon account.

They are, but only if you had commented on Update 6 before the cut off date.

    44. Peter Pugliese on September 21, 2012

@Eric, it better be. They were separate goals, with their own incentives.

    45. SmartThings Creator on September 21, 2012

@Stephanie thanks for the kind words! Per updates 11 and 12, we've got a lot that is "real" right now, so we're hoping we'd still fit in under the revised guidelines even if we launched today.

But we agree that vision also needs to be supported in this great community. Perhaps a better mechanism might be limiting the total size of campaigns for first time project creators that are then able to be expanded as they deliver solid results. Regardless, we will do our best to deliver amazing things for you!

    46. Eric Yen on September 21, 2012

For the extra thing that everyone gets in this update for reaching 1M$, is it in addition to the one from update 6 for reaching 2500 backers?

    47. Stephanie Clarkson on September 21, 2012

I really think that as one of the most successful projects on Kickstarter, you need to let them know what not allowing renders and simulations of your product would have done, in the Kickstarter is not a Store debate that is going on right now:

I invested in you because of your vision (technically, I invested in you because I was so excited about it that I told a friend of mine about you, all visions of sugarplums dance in my heads excited about you, and he gave me the money to buy an Early Bird, then he bought one himself). Kickstarters *need* that quality of vision to be able to look at something and see the possibilities the creator sees. I think it is *very* important that in addition to this incredibly thoughtful project that I am looking forward to integrating in my life, you make it clear to Kickstarter that they should keep encouraging visionaries, not just people ready to go to production.

      Thank you.

    48. Peter Pugliese on September 21, 2012

I'm happy to see the app shown on an Android phone this time :)
