Update 14: SmartThings Around the World!

First, thanks to ALL of you, we’ve hit the $1 million stretch goal and that means a bonus SmartTag in every SmartThings Pack!

Second, if you’re an international backer, this update is for you. If you’re not, there’s no need to read this whole update.

We know our international backers have been waiting for more details on cost and timelines for shipping SmartThings Packs internationally. And while there are plenty of details still being worked through, we have done quite a bit of work with our logistics partners to provide you with all of the information possible before the project closes, so you can make a final decision on your pledge amount as an international backer.

ALL of our international backers should expect to pay $49 OR LESS for shipping and handling of their reward. This is for standard delivery within 6-10 business days. This is not inclusive of any country-specific taxes, tariffs, etc. and we will not have additional detail on these prior to the close of the campaign. We are actively negotiating with our partners to achieve the best possible rates for every country.

DO NOT add any amount for shipping to your pledge. You will receive a survey prior to shipping that will request your details and collect payment for international shipping based on optimized and specific shipping rates.

We are not changing our target of Q1 2013 for shipment of international pledge rewards. Initial research indicates that certification testing and validation will range from 4-6 weeks across the radios we have in the SmartThings Hub and Things. Our priorities for full certification and compliance prior to shipping are based on the volume of backers in each country, with first focus on Canada, UK & EU, Australia, and New Zealand. Some international backers, in countries where only a few pledges were made (and where it is legal to do so) may receive non-certified hardware for personal use.

We will include country-specific power adapters for your SmartThings Hub.

Our battery powered Things have been designed from the beginning to operate in international regions. As a result, we have a high level of confidence in our ability to certify and include all of the same types of battery powered Things (Smart Tag, motion sensor, contact sensor, etc.) for international distribution by Q1. We are aware of the different regional frequency requirements for Z-Wave and will deliver a version of the SmartThings Hub to you that includes the appropriate regional chips.

The SmartOutlet is the most challenging of our Things when it comes to international compatibility. Given SmartThings’ support for existing Zigbee and Z-Wave standards, we believe that the quickest and most straightforward way to service every international region will be to test, certify, and bundle in existing 3rd party outlets that integrate with SmartThings. Through this path, we feel confident in our ability to ship international SmartThings Packs with country specific outlets.

While the final details may vary some as we work further, we consider the following approximations to be the maximum dimensions and weight for a typical shipment.

Approximate Size: 11” x 8 1/2” x 5 1/2”
Approximate Weight: Maximum of 4 Pounds

We believe this box size will comfortably and safely ship the SmartThings Hub, Power Adapter, and up to 5 Things. If the combination or number of Things that you select as a reward DO NOT comfortably fit in this box, we may elect to ship in a larger box, or separate boxes at no additional cost to you.

Thank you!

@Kirpa Singh Gulati Sorry for late reply, I just found it. Ok, I thought the term "adapter" would be an external plug. Thanks for holding my hand, even if your's is trembling. ;^) So, let's hope for the best. Greetings to India!

@amix If I remember correctly, they already expressed support for 110-240V power supplies built in, just that it would take longer (Q1 2013). However, initially they mentioned only the north american two pin plug support. With this update, they are clarifying that they will spend extra time to provide region specific adapters to connect to your wall outlet, not as an additional accessory but basically replacing the N.Am adapter with your region specific one (This had me worried too since i'm from India)
Hope that clears all doubts =)
@Smartthings, do correct me if I was wrong on any of those counts.

Please, if you somehow can do it, create a seperate 220V hub for EU. Just using an adapter is

      a) ugly
      b) taking away space from the outlet, which may be problematic if it is behind furniture
      c) unsafe for 24/7? What is with fuses, etc?

Better make the shipment to EU last till next year and get to us with a solid product. What do you think?

    4. Nicolas on September 20, 2012

When we will know how much it will cost for the shipping, and when you will refund us if we see that it's too expensive.

      1) Did you sell international items later with amazon worldwide?
      2) with my FRIENDS pledge did i have the allways free monthly service secured for later purchase of a SmartThing?

    6. Steven on September 20, 2012

You guy kick ass! Glad to be apart of the project!

    7. Caleb Wong on September 20, 2012

When is the dev n maker update going to made? :) we are waiting patiently :p
Hope we get maybe two more extra on 500 or even more at 600?! Let us know some good deals so people will move n join this tier!
We will all make this a good community I guess!

    8. SmartThings Creator on September 20, 2012

@Athanasios - Yes that is correct.

    9. Athanasios Mazarakis on September 20, 2012

Is this correct? I get twoextra Smartthings? One for the 1 million goal and one for partcipating in Update Nr 6 comments? Please anyone from the team give me a quick answer, thx. :)

    10. SmartThings Creator on September 20, 2012

@Nicolas - $49 is the maximum. Canada will end up being less expensive. See note above.

@far minded & Craig Wilcox - we are actively looking into how we can make the enclosures weather and water resistant, with the highest priority being the Smart Tag. We'll keep you updated!

    11. Nicolas on September 19, 2012

      49$ for Canada, that's really expensive !!

On the Keyfob, would it be waterproof, i have had a similar device on pets, and they kept breaking them and then i saw what they did, they would drink water and put it in the water bowl. lol

    13. Andre on September 19, 2012

      Thanks for the update!

    14. Craig Wilcox on September 19, 2012

What's the verdict on "outdoor" compatibility ? dog tag for fido got loose would especially need a little special about for open/close sensors or IR sensors, etc. (Naturally, I'm thinking fence gate open/close, etc.

Also, how "sensitive" are the smart tags? an easy use is the washer / Dryer... letting you know when it's done, especially with the spin cycle completion, etc.

Looking forward to my December "CHRISTMAS" present! :)

Nice work on your kickstarter campaign and it looks like SmartThings has produced a great product. I am excited to get my home system and test it out!

    17. SmartThings Creator on September 19, 2012

@Peter - no, we were saying that our battery powered Things WILL work with any of our hubs, either U.S. or international.

@Xi - you will choose prior to shipping. We expect to expand the list of available items so no need to choose now.

@Marcin - that is exactly the idea behind it. Stills or video clips that can be triggered by other SmartApps and devices - e.g. when there is motion, when the door opens, etc.

@all we will look into options for combining shipments. No promises but we'll see what we can do there!

Hi, after your post in the comments section (yesterday?) reconfirming for the nth time, I upped my pledge even from a second account even before your update knowing that I could definitely trust you! =)
So, similar to Caleb above, i have two accounts that have enough SmartThings for pretty much three locations that I want to set it all up in!! (I'd get more if I could). But ditto, on his question..can the two pledges be combined to make a more economical single sized packaged box for shipping?

    19. Markus Reimer
      on September 19, 2012

It would be great if you will be able to support Plugwise's zigbee based smart outlets with metering.

    20. Carlos de Aracil Arcos on September 19, 2012

I have an address in USA but I'm planning on using my smartthings in my other house in Spain so my question is: Can I order an international (Spain) smartthings pack and get it delivered at my address in the US?

    21. Caleb Wong on September 19, 2012

Sorry but I love smartthings too much that I pledged with a few accounts (I think you have notice) could you combine them so I can pay only one shipping fee? Thanks! Will pledge for more things of coz! Just waiting the dev n maker update. (or could we add extra after this ends, as the time is not enough to make big decision) THANKS!

    22. Marcin Wolny on September 19, 2012

      Quick question @SmartThings
Are there any chances to see camera module shooting stills when triggered by other thing (eg. open/close sensor triggering camera to make a shot that can remotely show me who just entered the home) ?
Because IMHO this or full video streaming module is a must-have if you want to consider "security" packages.

Just wondering if we can choose the things in our package since I was not giving a choice and could not find where to specify these. Please post the link if you know. Thanks.

Peter Rask on September 19, 2012

So, Smarttags and other Things will be region specific ie if I buy a motion sensor thingy in the US it will not work with my "european" Smart Hub?

    25. Daniel Carter on September 19, 2012

Yay SmartThings! Did you ever think you'd hit 1M when you started?!

    26. SmartThings Creator on September 19, 2012

@Joe - We suspect you are right and it will be less to ship to Canada.

@Paul- looks like your math is right. If you commented on Update 9 you get that extra Thing. And you get the extra SmartTag.

    27. Nikki Gordon-Bloomfield on September 19, 2012

Thanks for this update, folks. I know it's tough to get things certified for different countries. We're happy to wait!

    28. Paul on September 19, 2012

thanks for the shipping clarification and extra thing. To be clear, replying to update 9 and being an early bird would allow me to get 1 SmartOutet and 4 sensors correct?

I appreciate all the add-ons, especially the smart tag, but dang this is confusing!

    29. Joe on September 19, 2012

Will you not get the shipping details sooner before the project closes? I'm in Canada and $49 seems to be a little much for shipping...

    30. Steamerni on September 19, 2012

For me I think it has helped make my decision to reduce my pledge to friend level and wait until they are ready for the UK market. If only I had been able to get in at the Super Early Bird pledge level. Good luck with your bright future....

    31. christos on September 19, 2012

Marcin Wolny - using my mind i hoped less then 49$......using your mind.....xmmm....i don't

    32. SmartThings Creator on September 19, 2012

@Cojamist - The initial packs come with 1 SmartOutlet and any combination of the other sensors. We have also been telling people if they would like to substitute a sensor for another outlet they can add $10 to their pledge.

    33. Cojamist
      on September 19, 2012

Excellent :-) and £30 (ish) to ship from the US isn't that bad I was fearing a much higher number! With our now 4 free things is there any limit / rules to choosing multiples of the same thing, for example choosing 4 power adapters (the most expensive thing) ? Looking forward to first quarter of 2013 :-D

    34. Marcin Wolny on September 19, 2012

christos - you hoped for 50$ or more? lol

Anyway, thanks for the update! I think it solves most of the questions I had. Really hope that the UK certification won't take too long... *eyerolls* but I understand it's in no way dependent on you.
      Good luck out there!

Why do you need to make any changes for Canada? I am in the US right now, in Boston, I am Canadian and I often go back and live in Toronto (most recently from 2001-2006). I have never had any issues moving my electronic stuff back and forth. So I am curious what changes you need to make for Canadian use, and what I will need to keep in mind.
