My name is Josh Smart, and I'm the owner of Smart Skis. My project is to create a ski workshop that will allow for the production of high-quality custom skis. With my current process, creating a ski involves moving the skis from multiple locations, and the build time is roughly 3-4 weeks. My goal is to make a larger streamlined workspace that will allow for a faster build time as well a better product.
Let's step back and let me explain how I got to this point: like many skiers, I always look to the yearly buyer's guides to help me choose the right ski for my skiing. As many of you can probably relate, it doesn't always work out too well. The skis you get ended up being something different than what you were expecting. So, in 2012, I decided I would address this problem by making my own skis. After a lengthy R&D and testing of materials, I pressed my first pair of skis and have not stopped. Since then, I have made skis for skiers from Maine to Austria.
The goal of each ski is to make a high-quality product while trying to reduce wasted materials. That goal has resulted in making standard skis that are made with less plastic than the normal mass-produced ski.
Currently, I'm offering two models of skis: Street Smarts and Hick Sticks. The Street Smarts are front side all-mountain park-capable skis, while the Hick Sticks are surfy powder skis that are at home both in the deep stuff and on the groomers. Each ski can be made at a variety of lengths, from 162 to 192, and each ski is made to be the way you want it to look. You get to choose the topsheet design, ranging from a custom veneer top sheet to a custom printed canvas.
The start date for the construction of the shop will tentatively be February/March and should take roughly 4-6 weeks to finish. That is where the majority of the funds will be used, the remaining will be used to purchase the ski materials. Once construction is complete the task of setting up the workspace will begin, which should take an additional 2-4 weeks. Once ski production begins, skiers that have purchased skis will be contacted to go over their design and delivery date.
Risks and challenges
All shipping in the USA will be included in the cost of the skis. Shipping for skis going outside of the USA will be paid for by the purchaser.
Construction and set up time for the shop may vary, which will result in a delay of ski production.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
