Rico aims to disrupt how we consume electronics.
For the average consumer, the shelf-life of a smartphone is 24 months. According to IDC, of the over 280 million smartphones that were sold last year, many will be replaced without being recycled. These phones are toxic to the environment, polluting the air and contaminating soil and water with metals and plastics. What’s worse is that over 90% of these will be in perfect working order.
We value it essential to be able to reuse electronics when they would either remain unused or discarded altogether. Why not use that same device in such a way that not only prevents wastage, but gives you more features than before? Thanks to Rico, this is possible, with the life of your old smartphone suddenly beginning again.

The app also allows you to track all the data from various sources in your home, and over time, help you see trends in the way your home environment changes, allowing you to make smart decisions about optimizing how it is run.

We firmly believe that consumer electronics products not only needs to look great, but also have to appeal to everyone in the family. So we decided to make Rico really, really cute. Out of the window goes the standard, boxey smart home device that already exists and in comes Rico with its fun and playful design, bright colors and quirky style. Smart-home devices just got cool.

We need your support.
We have been building Rico for the past year and have successfully developed a working prototype and app, but now we need your help. Your support will help us get the perfect manufacturer as well as covering production costs.
We are currently focusing on:
- Finalizing engineering design & schematics for the production device
- Iterating on the mobile app, focusing on user experience
- Developing analytics and data visualization tools
- We have connected with OEM manufacturers for Rico in China
- In talks with supply chain and logistics partners in north America, Europe and India
With your help, we can make this happen.
Rico + Kickstarter
All our Kickstarter backers will get the primary services for free. This includes access to the Rico App (iOS and Android) devices on which you get access to all the features such as free live video streaming, live sensor data, data trends and control of smart sockets. All users get access to app updates for free as well.
We plan to add more cool features on Rico like voice commands and image processing (which will be made free only if MindHelix does not incur any service fee from a third party provider on which these services would be built) as well as door locks, object tags and smart bulb sockets, which will be available from our website.
Rico will be shipped to Kickstarter backers as soon as November 2015.
Risiken und Herausforderungen
Despite concentrating all our efforts to make Rico as great as possible, we want to lay out the risks with the project and explain the different ways we are mitigating them:
Manufacturing: Creating the tooling to manufacture a product of this size is expensive and requires expert knowledge to get it right. There is typically a 60 day lead time to create the molds for a product of this size and delays could occur at this point. To minimize that possibility, we're working with tooling manufacturing partners in China that have a track record for prompt quality.
Product Adjustments: The prototype we have now is going through various tests to refine the product. Along with in-house testing, Rico is being tested by experienced manufacturing partners as well. This could mean Rico undergoes some minor adjustments in preparation for production, resulting in delays. These will always be for the benefit of the customer and we will let you know exactly how and why any changes are made.
Fulfilment: Sometimes things go awry that can’t be planned for: a supplier misses a deadline, a machine breaks down, a shipment gets lost. This equals delays. In order, to minimize the possibility of manufacturing setbacks, we will enter the manufacturing stage with at least one back-up supplier for each component, specially selected by our team to ensure excellence and quality.

You can plug in Phones with Android 2.2 & above, Apple devices with iOS 6 & above. Rico can support devices with screen size of 5.7 inch or below, this includes the Note 3 and iPhone 6 plus and a 3.5mm audio jack is required in your spare smart phone.

Rico has been designed in a way which makes the set up process quite easy. Download the Rico side App into your used smartphone and it into Rico, you will also have to connect charger cables into your spare smartphone. Now you can download the Rico mobile application on your personal smart phone and stay connected with your home.

We would want to get Rico to seamlessly integrate with popular platforms like IFTTT, “Works with NEST program” and Apple HomeKit etc.

Yes, you will be creating a user account with a username and password which will allow you to sign in on any iOS or Android smartphone or tablet.

Storing the video monitoring logs is optional. If your are just live streaming, our servers will just initiate a peer-to-peer connection from the Rico companion app within Rico to the Rico app on your personal smartphone. All video feed data will then be transferred from app to app (a peer-peer stream). Our current prototypes follow the WebRTC open standards to make this secure and to maintain privacy. We have put this feature on priority on our App but we will have to collect all our backer suggestions and inputs before we finalize on the exact feature list other than the original ones in our proto App. -
Smart socket doesn’t come along with Rico, it has to be ordered separately.

No one else can see your videos other than you. The information sent from Rico to your mobile device and the cloud is encrypted and secured using SSL. Only a user with the correct credentials will have access to view what is happening.

Estimated shipping dates for the first devices begin in November 2015 in the US.

Rico is plugged in all the time. We have not included a battery within Rico at this point; however our system would detect a lost connection to either power or WiFi and alert you in case that happens right on your personal Rico App.

We will be opening Rico API for developers to extend the capabilities of Rico. We envision our developer community to build new cool things that extend Rico’s capabilities beyond the smarthome and into more things in IoT space.

Rico has standard charging cables inside it which will continuously charge the used smartphone kept inside it.

Yes, we are engineering the Rico side App to work seamlessly with smartphones which have broken screens. Now you don't have to throw your smartphone away just because it has a broken screen.

We use a RF based chip for the connection between Rico and smartsocket (these connections are encoded as well). These chips are certified for 60-70 meter range and we are able to cover a concrete building with 3 floors with them.
