About
Small Souls is ready to record our first studio album! Earlier this year we released a five song EP, a project originally intended as a simple demo. As the songs evolved into more ambitious arrangements, we started recognizing the potential for making a full studio album--and doing it the right way.
The funds for this project will be used for recording, mixing, mastering, artwork, duplication, and promotion of our first full-length CD. Making an album takes a lot of money, time, and coordination. We're lucky enough to know so many musicians and artists in the Portland area who can contribute their talents. This is a community effort, so we also need your support.
We plan to spend two weeks recording and mixing at The Magic Closet, a full service recording studio in the Sellwood neighborhood of SE Portland. Luckily, Bryan Daste is an owner of the studio, so he will produce and engineer the record. Then the album will be sent to Boston to be mastered by Jeff Lipton, who has worked with artists such as Wilco, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, and The Magnetic Fields. Once the CD is mastered, it will be ready for duplication, which will require artwork and layout. Finally, we'll need to promote our new album, which means sending it to radio stations and music publications all across the country. It's a lot of work, but we can make it happen!
Here's the breakdown of our costs:
Recording and mixing: $2400
Paying session musicians: $1200
Mastering: $1000
Artwork and design: $500
Duplication: $1100
Promotion: $300
We're really excited to make this album. Let's reach our goal by July 4, so you can join us in celebrating our freedom as independent musicians!
