About

We need your help to create Small But Fierce magazine. We want to create a unique and fun magazine about art, forgotten women in history and craftivist activities. This mag will be given to the community and cultural spaces for children to learn and create. We have the content, we have the creative team, now we need the backers!

Prototype of the mag

Small But Fierce magazine started out of the sheer frustration of:

Why are women not written about in art history books?

Why are these incredible women not taught in schools and universities?

And why the hecky thump is there STILL a gender gap with the representation of women in museums and galleries?

This magazine is NOT for adults to tell children what they should see and think, but designed and led by what the children wanted to see in their magazine. For the past year, we have worked alongside, talked with, and listened to 250 children and created DaDa Costumes, Creative Crowns to crown yourself with your amazing achievement. Rebel Pages, where you implant old dusty history books with creative pages about forgetting women.

School Workshop at New Bridge, Gateshead

Workshop at The Hancock Museum, Newcastle

Why is this important?

The arts are in decline. Schools are slowly stripping away the arts in the curriculum. The funding of socially engaged projects is becoming harder to achieve. There is still a lack of representation of women in the arts.

For 30 years the International feminist art and activist collective 'The Guerrilla Girls' have been protesting about the lack of representation of women in museums and galleries. One of their most famous pieces of protest work was about how many women are displayed in The MET (The Metropolitan Museum of Art):

In 1989 only 4% of artists in the MET Modern Art section were by women. 76% of the nudes were female. The recounted again in 2012. 5% of artists in the MET Modern Art section were by women and 85% of the nudes were female. As you can see, a HUGE difference in 23 years! We need change to happen, the young people we have worked alongside want to change to happen. We need to act. We need to be Small but Fierce!

Work made by a 6 year old, learning about North East Women.

The Team behind Small but Fierce are feminist. We are a part of the LQBTQ+ community and include disabled artists and people of colour.

We believe art should be at the forefront of addressing social inequalities and that with educational and financial cuts lack of representation will only grow. We believe, we are scared, that these new and innovative voices which want to change the world could be lost.

For us, this magazine (facilitated by adults, but created and run by children) is a tool for supporting future generations to learn about, use and share the social power of art to explore and affect positive change in the world.

About the Team

The Team making the video for Kickstarter

The project is facilitated by a small group of artists and activists, based in North East England. The group, who have combined 40+ years experience working in social practice, are:

Sofia Barton is an artist and a feminist. She was selected to be apart of the Great North Elmer Parade supported by St.Oswald’s Hospice. She has also appeared on BBC Newcastle as well as in the Evening Chronicle tackling issues about social enterprises, minorities and other issues facing female artists.

Lisette Auton is a disabled activist, writer, poet, spoken word artist, theatre-maker and creative practitioner. Lisette was recently chosen as a Penguin RHUK's WriteNow Mentee. This is to write a children's novel, The Wrecklings, which features a strong female disabled protagonist. Her works seeks to make the invisible visible.

Danni Gilbert is a Graphic Designer and LQBTQ+ campaigner who is building a reputation for her bold illustrations. She uses her art to create social change and tell stories for those without a voice, with themes encompassing female empowerment, identity, love and sexuality.

Sarah Stamp is a visual artist and museum professional. Sarah’s creative practice subtly plays with and imagines alternate approaches to existing and fictional everyday lives in an attempt to understand the world live in. As a museum professional Sarah works in the area of audience development and community engagement.

Lady Kitt is an artist and activist. They are currently having a residency at Crown Street Gallery in Darlington, a socially engaged project as part of Middlesbrough Art Weekender.

Michaela Wetherell is a curator, her practice concerns the promotion of underrepresented groups and using art to promote equality. Her particular passions are female (under)representation within the arts and the relevance of working-class identity. She is one of the co-founders of Nasty Women North East, curator at Thought Foundation and Curating and Marketing Manager at Platform A Gallery.

So, why do we need your support?

Your contribution to this project will:

Pay the expenses of the facilitator and artists.

Create 500 copies of the absolutely glorious FIRST EVER Small but FIERCE magazine. 250 of these will be offered as rewards thought the Kickstarter. 250 will be donated to schools, libraries, community centres, museums, archives and galleries around the world. To do this we need to pay for printing and hire an editor.

Allow young peoples' voices to be seen and heard.

We've only asked for enough pennies to cover 500 copies and our expenses. If we get more money (oh my days, please, yes!) we can ensure the magazine is even more glorious, we can create more copies to show even more institutions around the world what change can look like!

We have been enormously inspired by the power harnessed and support offered to other Kickstarter projects, for example, the tremendous Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls. As regular supporters of crowed funded projects ourselves we can understand how galvanizing and exciting it can be to get involved in projects through the platform and we hope you feel the same about what we’re trying to do!

Risks and challenges

We were selected to be a part of the Social Art Network (SAN) and Kickstarter mentorship programme. We’ve had support and advice through training sessions on how to plan and run a Kickstarter campaign. This means we have anticipated the challenges we may face and have had expert advice and guidance to mitigate these potential challenges.

We have already put a lot of work into getting the Kickstarter up and running so we’re prepared to put the work in to get this magazine created.

But to put your mind at rest we wanted to let you know what we thought we may come up against and what we’re going to do/have done to make sure the magazine is created:

Funding

There is always the unfortunate risk that the campaign will not reach its target. This is why we’ve set a modest target, which while ensuring the basics are covered, only asks for what we feel we need to get the magazine printed. Kickstarter are also an all or nothing platform so if we don’t reach our target we won’t be trying to do everything on a fiver! More cash equals bigger and better so please don't be shy, DONATE!

Time frame

As we’ve had generous support from Kickstarter we’ve given ourselves a realistic time frame to complete the project. We’ve revised this throughout our project planning as it’s become clear what will be involved in making a real printed magazine. We have a project plan with deadlines along the way and a team who are experienced in delivering a whole host of creative projects to a deadline. So we feel confident that we can make this happen on time.

Team Work

We understand making things happen is hard work at times. We’re working as a team on this project, so this means none of us are individually taking on too much. (Women and artists are prone to doing this!) We’re all chipping in and have each taken responsibility for different areas and worked collectively on some, such as our lovely video. We’ve taken into account of all of the other things we’ve got going on, such as busy periods at work and on other projects, family obligations, Christmas, staying healthy, dealing with the patriarchy, Brexit* and having fun. We're also really lush at listening to and looking after each other.

*just kidding

Getting the physical magazine made….

Between us we have a good range of networks for producing creative projects and have worked on publications before. We have costed up the price of printing and have the skills between us to do things like layout and proofing.

Working with children

We want to continue working with children to make the magazine. This is the way we’ve always worked before, so far we have worked with 25 children to produce our online magazine. We’ve also worked with a range of organisations who work with children and as a team, we’re experienced in working with children, young people and communities. Anyone who has worked with children may know that things don’t always go according to plan however, that is the whole point of Small But Fierce magazine. It’s about children taking the lead and telling us about the change they want to see in the world. So this may mean that the children and young people we work with disrupt our carefully laid plans but we’re prepared for this and wouldn’t have it any other way!
