THANK YOU BACKERS!!!
Since 2007, Small Box Games has produced small, unique, domestically manufactured card games. As part of Small Box Games’ 10 year anniversary, I’ve revisited the themes, mechanics, settings, and gameplay of some of my earlier releases.
These three games: Cartouche Dynasties, Hemloch: Dark Promenade, and Seii Daimyo pay homage to the earlier days of Small Box Games, and have been designed, upgraded, and polished to the standards Small Box Games fans expect. These games strike a balance between where I started with Small Box Games, to where the company is now, 10 years later.
Hemloch: Dark Promenade
Two players return to the peculiar city of constant shadow. Using a new Avenue Mechanic, players play Minions from their hands to extend their Influence across the city. This is a standalone game based in the world of Hemloch.
The core mechanic of Small Box Games’ first game is revitalized in the setting of Sengoku Era Japan. Two to Four players secretly choose roles to seize locations, fortify their holdings, and build their armies.
A two player, combo-driven, worker placement card game where players vie to forge the greatest Kingdom in Ancient Egypt by playing God cards to acquire and play additional Dynasty cards to gain abilities and points.
This is a short, 10 day project. Through this project, you can obtain a copy of one, two, or all of these games, including the full print and play files.
The Rewards for this project are separated by region, and the pledge amounts shown in each Reward already include any shipping fees. Backers will be able to select their games after the project closes through the pledge manager.
If you are an international backer concerned about customs, please see the FAQ.
If you would like to back for four or more games, please send me a message.
Each Reward* comes with one Promo Pack that will include additional, optional cards for these three games. The Promo Pack will include 28 cards. You can find out more about these Promo Pack cards at the bottom of this project's page.
These Promo Packs are included as a thank you to backers of this project for no additional cost*. However, they will be available in very limited quantities once all rewards have been delivered, for $8.00 via smallboxgames.com.
*Backers for just the print and play files will receive a digital copy of the Promo Pack.
Cartouche Dynasties is a 30-45 minute card game for two players. Each player represents either Upper or Lower Egypt, respectively. There are six God cards, and each Age, four of these cards are available to the players. God cards are selected and played to the four face up Dynasty decks. Each God card allows the player to obtain cards from the decks or play cards they have acquired to their Kingdom.
The Dynasty deck includes Structures, Followers, Statues, and Scarabs. Each card offers a special ability, as well as a unique scoring rule when the game ends. The Dynasty cards synergize with each other, allowing players to form combos.
Additionally, sometimes Dynasty cards can be played face down into the player’s Scrolls, which grant them points at the end of the game based on the cards in their Scrolls.
CARTOUCHE DYNASTIES INCLUDES: 6 God Cards, 50 Dynasty Cards, Full Color Rulebook, Black Linen Gold Stamped Box.
Cartouche was illustrated by Oliver Howe and John Ariosa.
In Hemloch: Dark Promenade, a two player card game, each player is the head of an ancient house in the city of Hemloch. With nights that last for years and cults that await the coming sunrise, Hemloch is a peculiar city, inhabited by even more peculiar denizens. Players will use these Minions to assert their influence across the city, gaining control of different Districts.
Hemloch: Dark Promenade is played over a series of 3 Weeks (or rounds). Each Week, the players will take turns playing Minion cards from their hands to their Avenues to gain Influence, take Districts, and thwart the other player’s plans. At the end of 3 Weeks, the game ends and the player with the most points wins across Districts and Items.
The game is played on a 3x3 grid of randomly distributed District decks. Each player has 3 Avenues (rows or columns) where they can play cards. One player will play Minions to the 3 Avenues on the right side, while the other player will play Minions to the 3 Avenues on the bottom. These District cards are claimed at the end of each Week during an Influence Check.
Each Minion offers several different abilities, and depending on where it is played, different abilities are used. Players have to balance winning Districts and triggering Abilities.
HEMLOCH: DARK PROMENADE INCLUDES: 32 District Cards, 20 Minion Cards, 4 Item Cards, Full Color Rulebook, Black Linen Gold Stamped Box.
This is a standalone game based in the world of Hemloch.
Hemloch: Dark Promenade was illustrated by Daryl Toh.
Seii Daimyo is a game for two to four players of intrigue and conflict, set in Sengoku Era Japan. Each player has an identical set of Role cards: 1 Samurai and 1 Ashigaru. Each round, the players will play one of these cards secretly, and will gain actions based on what they played, as well as what the other players chose to play.
Players use these actions to Seize new Locations, Fortify Locations they already control, Raze Locations controlled by other players, and play Clan Cards to their armies for scoring bonuses, special abilities, and to win Contests.
Players score points for the Locations they have, and receive bonuses for the Clan Cards in their armies.
While Seii Daimyo is playable with two, the game shines with three to four players.
SEII DAIMYO INCLUDES: 8 Role Cards, 27 Location Cards, 20 Clan Cards, 1 Daimyo Card, Full Color Rulebook, Black Linen Gold Stamped Box.
Seii Daimyo was illustrated by Eduard Visan and Liz Lahner.
As an additional bonus for backing this project, backers will receive a Promo Pack.
Each Reward* comes with one Promo Pack that will include additional, optional cards for these three games. Each Promo Pack includes 28 cards, featuring:
- 9x Cards for Seii Daimyo (Alternate 2 Player Role Cards and 2 different Ninja Clan Cards)
- 11x Cards for Hemloch: Dark Promenade (Charlatan, Deceiver, and Servitor Minion cards, and Garden cards)
- 8x Cards for Cartouche Dynasties (Structure - Tomb, Scarab - Opal, and Scarab - Onyx)
These Promo Packs are free to backers of this project, but will be available in very limited quantities once all rewards have been delivered, for $8.00 via smallboxgames.com.

Whether you’ve been around since 2007, or you’re just now finding out about Small Box Games, thank you for taking the time to check out this project!
I started Small Box Games in 2007 with a pretty simple vision: make small, unique, domestically manufactured card games in small print runs. Over the past decade, I’ve managed to stay pretty true to that vision. The production values have increased, and while my print runs are much larger than they used to be, they’re still small by industry standards.
Revisiting the mechanics, themes, settings, and gameplay of three early Small Box Games titles has been the most fun designing and testing games I’ve ever had with Small Box Games. Partly for the nostalgia, but mainly for the fact that these games are a lot of fun to play. These designs have received a thorough upgrade, both aesthetically and mechanically, culminating in three really fantastic games: Cartouche Dynasties, Seii Daimyo, and Hemloch: Dark Promenade.
I’ve run Small Box Games differently than most other game companies for the past 10 years. The games I publish aren’t available from your FLGS or OLGS (unless they special order directly from Small Box Games, which doesn’t happen very often). With short run, domestically produced games, the majority of games that Small Box Games produces are distributed through Kickstarter projects like this one, and the rest are available directly from smallboxgames.com.
I hope you’ll consider backing this project and adding one or more of these games to your collection.
To all of the Small Box Games fans, customers, and long time backers, Thank you for an amazing decade!
Risks and challenges
Like all Small Box Games' games, these three games will be domestically manufactured.
I do my very best to mitigate any risks associated with manufacturing games. I've built solid relationships with several state-side manufacturing companies, and after 14 previous successful Kickstarter projects, I've come to know what to expect regarding quality and turnaround time.
Of course, there's always the risk of something unforeseen happening during the production process. Kickstarter gives me the tools to keep in contact with backers, so I can keep them abreast of all aspects of production, each step of the way.
I'm already working with the manufacturers for these games, so that when this project ends, all I'll have to do is find out from you what game you would like, and tell my printers how many copies I need manufactured, helping to streamline the production process and hit the project's reward delivery deadline.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
