About this project
To be a surfer goes way beyond the water.
Preconceived Noceans is a film project that aims to expand our understanding of surf culture. It describes the passion and drive that pushes individuals to face extreme conditions to pursue their sport and characterizes their lifestyle once they exit the water.
The film focuses around the surfers who ride the Great Lakes. The five vast bodies of water in this region hold high potential for producing excellent freshwater waves during the winter months. The low pressure and gale force winds sweep across the lakes producing swells that enable surfing. There is a price to pay for surfing under these extreme conditions. The window of opportunity for waves is very slim; therefore, you need to keep your schedule as open as possible to be able to leave when the wind conditions are ideal. This means that you are driving through storms and walking up the beach while fighting the wind that whips off the frigid water. Once in the lake, you have to dodge icebergs and move constantly to keep your body temperature up. You become a member of the frozen snot club, once icicles hang from your nose and eyelashes. After catching the wave, all you can do is smile knowing you just got a great ride hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean.
My goal is to finish the film in the spring 2013, leaving the summer open for any finishing touches. I will set up an email account with progress reports to all those who donated to the project.

Your donation will be used to rent the equipment I need to finish my film. When I graduate from Rochester Institute of Technology this spring, I will lose all of my connections to the equipment necessary to make the film; therefore, I will have to rent. Traveling will also be a major expense. Most of the traveling will be by car, but when there is that last minute swell I have to film, I will try to catch a plane. Any additional funding raised will go towards underwater gear, to get in the water (and ice), and bring the movie a little closer. For its not really surfing unless you get you hair wet, making underwater gear quite necessary.
For the rest of the funds I need to make the film, I will turn to possible sponsors and surf companies. The money from kickstarter will help fund the transition in between graduation and sponsorships.
