Have we got an expansion for you - a new Red Dragon Inn character, an accompanying Battle for Greyport character, a reboot of one of our classic games, new promo content, and even an overflow storage solution for those of you who need one. Presenting - The Red Dragon Inn Smorgasbox!
But first, let's also introduce the game to the folks who are new to the series...
The Red Dragon Inn is a game for 2 or more players where each player takes on the role of a heroic adventurer (or sometimes a dastardly villain) in a wild free-for-all party in a fantasy tavern. Brawl, drink and gamble the night away to prove your mettle and be the last player standing at the end of an evening of bad decision making. Will you be able to outplay each of your opponents? Or will you wake up the next morning with a throbbing headache, a bit less gold in your pocket, and a horse awkwardly nudging you out of his stall?
If this is your first time joining us, we suggest you check out our introduction to The Red Dragon Inn series.
This campaign includes a Newcomer Edition, where you can get the Smorgasbox along with a copy of the original Red Dragon Inn game. The Newcomer Edition includes everything you need for a game of up to 5 players!
We're using the phrase "a little something for everyone" to describe this product, because it was designed from the ground up to be our response to a bunch of recent customer requests. Let's have a look at all the cool stuff that's in the box!
We start off, of course, with a new RDI character - our 47th, but who's counting? Roxana is the head chef at our beloved tavern. And she's called an "adventurous chef" for two reasons. First, she is no stranger to experimentation in the kitchen, preparing such ambitious dishes as Spatchcocked Cockatrice and Fire Salamander Flambé.
Second, she knows how to hold her own in a tavern full of adventurers, where things can get rather dangerous at a moment's notice!
We like to think of Roxana as the fifth member of the Tavern Crew from RDI 7, but she's an excellent addition to the party even if you happen to have skipped the Tavern Crew set from last year. We'll have more information about Roxana in the updates, where we'll give details about how she actually plays.
And as an added bonus, The Smorgasbox includes not just an RDI deck for Roxana, but also a Battle for Greyport deck!
We think Roxana is super fun to play in both games, and we think you'll agree!
Back in 2010, we published a game called The Red Dragon Inn: Gambling? I'm In!, which answered the question "what games are our heroes actually playing when they have a round of gambling?" The Gambling, I'm In product included a 90-card deck we called the Rogues and Warriors Deck, plus a bunch of different games you could play with that deck and/or some d6's. Each of the games is a standalone gambling game suitable for a fantasy-themed dealer's choice "poker" night. In addition, most of the games include rules for playing within a game of RDI, replacing a normal gambling round with that game!
Gambling, I'm In was a successful product, but it's been out of print for a while now, and we've gotten some requests for a reprint. So, here it is! The Smorgasbox includes a brand new Rogues and Warriors Deck, beautifully redrawn by our staff artist Erin Wong.
The new rulebook will include all of the previous games, plus five brand new ones, including the winner of our Gambling, I'm In game design contest: Dragon Hunt by David DeLauder, plus honorable mentions Streets of Greyport by Todd Christopherson, and Rank and Class by Jay Anderson!
Note: to play Gambling, I'm In games standalone, you'll need to provide some kind of betting tokens such as poker chips or cardboard coins from a certain tavern game. In addition, some of the games require d6's, which do not come in the Kickstarter Editions or the Newcomer Edition. (But some d6's DO come in the Collector's Editions - see below!)
Last year we released our Munchkin crossover product, The Red Dragon Inn Allies: Spyke and Flower, and we made the product a little different from our other two-player sets. We released it as a two-player standalone RDI expansion, with a drink deck and everything two players needed to play. However, not everyone likes two-player RDI as much as we do, so we created Otto, the automated third player!
Otto uses a ten-card deck and two separate Fortitude/Alcohol tracks. On his turn, he flips a card and causes something to happen to one or both of the other players. He also flips a card if it's his turn in a round of gambling, or if something would affect him. At the end of Otto's turn, he drinks from the drink deck. Otto can't lose the game, but if you make him "pass out" on the track closest to you, you get a small bonus - either 1 Gold from the Inn or 2 cards from your character deck.
At the beginning of the game, you build Otto's ten-card deck by choosing two of his five-card "factions" and shuffling them together. The original Otto included Warrior, Rogue, Cleric and Wizard factions. The Smorgasbox includes four new factions: Bard, Witchdoctor, Tinkerer and Paladin, so shuffle up some new Otto combos and have fun!
To learn more about how Otto works, check out our how-to-play video!
(Note: The Smorgasbox contains everything you need to play Otto, even if you don't have Spyke and Flower. You'll just be playing with four different factions, and since a game with Otto only uses two factions anyway, it works fine!)
We're trying something a little different for this campaign. We're including fancy metal components from our friends at Campaign Coins in every Kickstarter pledge level, not just the fancy high-end pledge levels. The metal components this time around will be skeletal finger tokens for use with The Lich King, released in late 2017 in our product Red Dragon Inn: Allies - Adonis vs. The Lich King.
Campaign Coins is already working on a prototype, and we hope to have images to show you before the end of this campaign.
Including these components in every Kickstarter edition is our way of saying thanks to our dedicated fans who keep enthusiastically playing our game!
This may make us sound like salespeople on the Home Shopping Network, but here goes. Ahem...
But wait! There's MORE!
The Smorgasbox also includes a whole bunch of new promo cards, including several new ones and a few reprints of hard-to-get ones. The Kickstarter Edition (and the retail edition) will include 5 promo drinks and 2 prize cards. The Collector's Edition will include those 7 cards, plus 6 more promo drinks and 1 more prize card.
(Kickstarter Edition reprints: Pretentious Wine, Timewarp Tonic. Collector's Edition reprints: Eve's Mystery Mead, Golden Stout, Whitehawk's Special Reserve, Prognosticating Punch, Hair of the Dwarf, Monster Attack - "roll a d6" version.)
And if that still isn't enough, the Collector's Edition also includes 30 custom d6's! Several of the games in Gambling? I'm In! require dice. Normally, players are required to provide their own, but if you get the Collector's Edition, you won't need to worry about that particular component, since you'll get 5 d6's in each of 6 different colors, with different designs drawn by artist Megan Langan.
A common complaint we've heard over the past year or so is that our card-sleeving uberfans are now out of room in their Character Trove. This presented a bit of a dilemma for us, since a product that only came in a new storage box might be perceived as overkill for our non-sleeving fans.
Kickstarter to the rescue!
As you may have already seen in the pledge levels, we're offering five different versions of this product:
So there's a perfect product for you here, regardless of what kind of an RDI fan you are, and regardless of whether or not you've gone "all in" on the franchise.
Disclaimer: there will not be any Eco or Collector's Editions sold in stores. The retail version of this game will be the same as the Kickstarter Edition (in the Battle-for-Greyport-sized box), but without the metal Lich King tokens.
Some details on shipping:
- Backers from the US and Canada: Shipping will be US and Canada "friendly" and will ship from within your country. If you would like additional copies of the game added to your reward, simply over-pledge the base amount for the additional game(s) you wish to add. You can add any number of additional copies to your rewards and you need only pay shipping once.
- International Backers: Where possible, we will try to use regional shipping options. However, customs-free "friendly" shipping is not available for backers outside the US and Canada. Backers are responsible for any tariffs or customs fees incurred by their shipment.
Furthermore, we want to make it absolutely clear that there will be no pledge manager for this campaign. Backers will not have the opportunity to upgrade their pledge level after the end of the campaign and should pledge for what they want during the funding period. Backers will receive a survey via Kickstarter to provide their shipping information a few weeks before we begin the fulfillment process. It is the backer's responsibility to fill out this Kickstarter survey in a timely fashion if they want to receive their rewards by our predicted delivery date.
Finally, if you would like to review the SlugFest Games Kickstarter Policy, you can find it on our website here.
As with most of our campaigns, we are not using a post-campaign pledge manager, and we are not offering add-ons. However, if you want to pick up another RDI game to go with the cool stuff in this product, you can head to our web store, where you can pick up any of our products without having to wait for your Smorgasbox to ship! During the campaign, we are offering free US shipping on all of our games.
We've done substantial playtesting on all of the stuff in this product, but if you'd like to try Roxana or have a look at some of our upcoming semi-sorta-secret stuff, then you should join the SlugFest Games Digital Play Test Community today! All you need to participate is a microphone for chat over Discord and Tabletop Simulator. We host daily sessions and would love to see you come by and give our stuff a test drive.
In addition, there is a post now up on our Facebook page announcing the launch of this campaign (THIS ONE), and if you comment on that post, you could win a prize!
Here's how it works: reply to our post announcing this campaign on Facebook with the following: "I'm [YourFavoriteRDICharacter], and I'm excited about The Red Dragon Inn Smorgasbox!" Of course, replace [YourFavoriteRDICharacter] with your actual favorite RDI character! On the last day of the campaign, we will select one commenter at random to receive a Collector's Edition of the Smorgasbox!

Risks and challenges
We pride ourselves in our ability to deliver a quality product on time, and we stand by our track record of doing so. However, here's a list of things you should know that could possibly go wrong:
1. Development Delay: Development on this project is done! The only delay that could come here is if we notice something bad that we didn't see before.
2. Manufacturing Delay: We have worked with our manufacturer for a very long time now. We have a great relationship with them and they work hard to get us our stuff on schedule. However, as always, unforeseen problems can arise.
3. Shipping Delay: Sometimes your stuff just goes missing and we have to print everything all over again. True story: an entire shipping container of our games was stolen back in July of 2012. Seriously.
4. Extraterrestrials could invade and enslave us to their will, and they may not be tabletop gamers.
The good news is that this is not our first rodeo by a LONG shot. We have launched and delivered on multiple campaigns much to the satisfaction of our backers. We have padded our promised delivery date with all of the realistic delays in mind so you can confidently expect your game to arrive by our suggested delivery date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
