Kung Fu Fighting is a fast paced, action card game for 2 to 6 players. You and your friends engage in climactic fights right out of Kung Fu movies. Teach them the meaning of pain with devastating kicks and punches. If you prefer, grab a weapon - like a bo staff or the nearest table - and start flipping through the air as you beat down your foes.
When the dust settles will you be the only one left standing? Or will your Kung Fu be too weak?
Kung Fu Fighting is a stand-alone card game with multiple ways to play. The base game is a free-for-all fight where each player is on their own battling for supremacy. Kung Fu Fighting will also come with rules for Team play and Character Cards with unique abilities. Once you get a feel for the game you can add in the Team Cards and Character Cards for more advanced play.
You’re probably thinking “This sounds great! But how’s it play?” The playtest documents for the basic game are available below so you can check it out for yourself!
Kung Fu Fighting was our very first game, published back in 2004. It was a fun, exciting game that sold two print runs and one expansion. However, sales of Kung Fu Fighting began to taper off so in 2011, when we sold out for the second time, we decided to not reprint it.
When the game first sold out, there were a few e-mails every so often requesting a reprint, or asking if there are any leftover copies hiding away in our warehouse. People loved the game, but not enough people, and we sadly had to keep turning folks away. We’ve been keeping our ear to the ground, and the number of folks asking for a reprint has been steadily increasing. A lot of folks seem to be ready for the game to come back and we are excited about the possibility of relaunching a title we really loved!
The thing is, the old Kung Fu Fighting was the best game we could make... ten years ago. With everything we’ve learned, we can do better! Since August of 2013 we have been working to update Kung Fu Fighting. Our efforts focused on improving on the game’s core mechanics by making gameplay faster and adding strategy while taking steps to keep the rules light and staying true to the original.
Folks who played the original will find that this new version plays faster, looks better, and rewards more strategic play. For those of who never got to play the original, we are sorry you missed it. But don’t worry, this new version is going to be better.
Kung Fu Fighting is nearly complete and we need your feedback! Download the Kung Fu Fighting Print and Play PDF and tell us what you think.
We've stripped the game down to make it as printer friendly as possible, and provided a single page rules document so you can dive straight in. Give the game a test drive and either let us know what you thought in the survey, or get in touch with us here! If you have any questions or need any clarifications, then let us know so we can address them.
You can get the files at the links below. You will need both sets of cards to play with the Team Rules.
We are giving Kung Fu Fighting more than just a facelift. In many ways this new edition is a whole new game. We loved the original, and worked to maintain its sense of fun and theme, but we did a lot of work on its mechanics.
If you are a budding game designer, a long time fan interested in how things have changed, or just curious what it looks like to design a game, check out the linked updates below!
- Update #1 - Luck vs. Strategy: In this update we went deep into the roles of luck, game theory, and strategy and their roles in making a crisp, clean, and fun game!
- Update #2 - Game Duration: In this update we go into one of the first rules of game design: "Trend toward completion."
One of the aspects we’ve been hoping to improve upon is a complete overhaul of the art and card design. Part of this overhaul includes working on iconography and tightening up the layout of information on the cards. The most exciting part, however, is giving the game a completely new look!
We have been working with two studios to conceptualize this new look for the game, Gong Studios and Robekka Art Studio. They have done some amazing work and we are thrilled to share the preliminary designs with you guys!

We are turning to Kickstarter for a couple of reasons. The most important one is turning to our fans and asking them if they really want to see Kung Fu Fighting make its comeback. The second is to take on the game’s massive art budget.
We are really excited about giving the game a complete style overhaul from the ground up! That means commissioning more than 60 unique, full color images. While the design is still in the works, we are excited about how far its come so far!
Any backer who pledges at a reward level that earns them a copy of Kung Fu Fighting will automatically receive our limited edition promo card set. This set of 4 cards includes an intriguing new character, a devastating enhancement, a powerful weapon, and an incredible stance.
We also have a number of art-related rewards available for folks looking to really help us out. Backers can pledge to earn a coffee table art book containing high resolution illustrations for all of the new Kung Fu Fighting art assets. Super fans of SlugFest Games or Kung Fu Fighting can also pitch in to directly sponsor art assets in the game, and earn their likeness either dishing our some serious Kung Fu justice or get pummeled into the ground!
You can also add on additional copies of Kung Fu Fighting and save! A great option for groups of Kung Fu masters looking to save on shipping!
SlugFest Games has been selling games through distribution for 10 years now, and we are extremely grateful to the friendly local game stores that carry our products.
To show our support we are offering a retailer reward level at a better-than-wholesale price. The Retailer Level will include 10 copies of Kung Fu Fighting plus 10 sets of all promotional game components. As per Kickstarter policy we can only offer this deal once per location.
Risks and challenges
SlugFest Games has been in the board game industry for 10 years. We already have established fulfillment and distribution channels for our board and card games, as well as a long standing relationship with our printer. It has been our goal to continue to improve on our delivery method and product quality and we have made great leaps and bounds over the past few years.
This campaign is also our third Kickstarter. We are very familiar with the tools that are available, and strive to be transparent about what is happening behind the scenes. We do our best to be up front with delays as well as successes throughout production. Any setbacks that do arise will be handled professionally.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
